Horrorfest- VOTING INSTRUCTIONS!

brandon is kicking ass here helping out clean some of this up.. thanks Brandon.

No problem dude!

Just to clarify on the VFX issue for everyone.

The reason for taking it off the final tally is simple. Not all films have VFX. All films have the rest of the things (at least the ones I've seen so far) If I were to let VFX be a part of the final vote average it could cause some problems. Mainly this. The formula would take the total numbers and divide by 7 (if we add VFX back into the final, it's 7) BUT! If a film doesn't have VFX and that's left blank, then 6 numbers are divided by 7, thereby creating a wrong average and much lower number. Hope this makes sense, and know everyone's being voted for with the same parameters. Thanks!

What I did for HeroFest, if a film didn't apply to, say, "Screenplay" or "Score", then I just left them blank. No zero, nor 1. I don't know if this helped or hurt the films, but it made me feel better.

this in fact hurts the films. The final average is the 6 categories, divded by 6. So, if you leave one blank, it divides 5 numbers by 6, thereby making the end average lower.

If you vote on a film, vote on everything. If a film doesn't have audible music for score, then take the sound score you gave it and make it the same as the score score, as the sound in that movie acts as the score. Hope that made sense.

Actually, you could have alleviated that problems by using a different formula....

=average(E3:K3)

If you had done that, any cell left blank would not have used for the average, only those with a number would have counted toward the average.

Thanks to Blaine we have a better formula for the Ballot, so please everyone, redownload it... Sorry for having to do it AGAIN! Thanks Blaine!

Dang it Jim!
I'm not sure which version I have any more....

Seriously though, thanks for your hard work Brandon.

I have two comments. I feel anyone with an entry shouldn't be allowed to vote because it opens the possibility of unfair play; eg. Someone wanting to win might judge their closest competetors unfavorably to increase their own odds.
I also feel the winner should be judged as a single best film catagory. If this method of judging were analogized in the art world, how would it work . . . seperate tallys of points would be given to how an artist used his yellows, reds, and greens? The beauty of the painting is how the colors are combined on a canvas. I'm not complaining and I don't have an entry, I just wanted to share my thoughts. Horrofest is a wonderful opportunity for us and I certainly appreciate all the work you've put into it.

Your comments are have been noted, but this is the method we'll be using this time. I think most of us filmmakers can be objective enough to vote fairly based upon each film. I trust we can do that.

Ok everyone, I think this is the LAST time I'll ask you all to redownload the ballot. I missed one film on the ballot, but got it on there now. Thanks all so much for your patience, I've been doing the best I can, just some things slipped through the cracks... apologies.

Wasn't this for the VFX category?
This is how it was in scifest. Enter VFX and it counts towards your score, leave it blank and it doesn't affect your average.

Eitherway, seems the VFX column is the only one this hasn't been applied to. Just making sure that's on purpose.

I realize that's currently the case.
I think you missed the point of my question.
SciFi= leave VFX blank it doesn't count in your average, fill it in it DOES count in your average

HorrorFest = leave anything else blank it doesn't count, fill anything else in it counts, VFX never counts.

I think the formula was offered to make the VFX column COUNT if entered as per scifi, not so much to make anything else NOT count.

No biggee. I can see you might not want people to have to dowloand again, but I was pleased when this formula showed up as I thought it would be applied as stated above.

Next time I guess.

Im downloading five at a time from Mikkos mirror... damn cable is slow in Japan... all files downloading at 200kbps for a total of 1mbps :p

hey Cire you got it.

I just PMed Jarred and he agrees with you.

We'll update the rules to say something like:
"To vote you must have 100 posts OR a film in competition. Filmmakers with less than 100 posts must include their username and the name of their film in the body of their email when submitting ballots." Last part is just to make it easy to throw out ballots that meet neither qualificiation.

Even if that doesn't officially get updated on the rules list, send your ballot in as per the above.

Brandon if you can udate that verbage in any of the threads you started regarding voting that would be great. I'll PM Hudson with the update as well
