Does the Phil Bloom video look "Terrible" or "lousy" to you, or make the 7D look like "the single most UNSUITABLE camera for that type of job, hands down, no questions asked" ? Exagerrated statements like that hurt your credibility IMO.

So I guess we should all believe you are the most credible one here? That makes sense. Instead of arguing for the sake of it why don't you listen to what people are saying. You might learn something.

Okay, seeing as Philip Bloom's name and videos are being used to support the notion that a DSLR would somehow be appropriate for news work, I thought -- hey, why not ask him directly?

So I did. I said "Would you argue that a DSLR is appropriate for ENG shooting?"

His response:
"I would not use one personally. Some people do but not for me. Far too much grief. Operation and workflow. I would use a video camera for sure."

Ha ha...All you guys are crackin me up...lol. What are we arguing about again...??
That's the thread's quote. LOL

It also is funny to see how the man who has got more from the DSLR boom is quoted to sum up one of the half-truths enunciated along the thread.

I have always had the impression that Philip Bloom is using the HDSLRs as "hobby cams". He's having fun with them, shooting some interesting things, but when it comes down to his bread-and-butter, is he replacing his EX/Letus combination? It doesn't seem like it.

@BARRY GREEN:
I never said 7Ds were the best News camera on the market, but you are the one saying they are the worst possible news camera on the market

But I will agree, I over-exaggerated when I said that the 7D was the single most unsuitable camera for news gathering. I should have said the t2i is the single most unsuitable camera for news gathering. :P (oh, wait -- since I introduced the t2i into the mix, that pushes the Red One down to third least-suitable for news/ENG.)

-So if you were a news cameraman in Iraq with terrorists shooting at you and IED's blowing up left & right, instead of a 2 pound DSLR you'd rather carry around a $25,000 , 30 pound, 250GB of memory per hour , 2 min boot up time, 30 min battery life, RED ONE? Do you realize that the RED ONE battery alone weighs more than a 7D? Plus imagine trying to get a once in a lifetime news shot , and having to wait 2 minutes for your RED ONE just to turn on.

& are you ignoring that ABC news just cut 300 jobs all over the USA? Cost is the #1 factor when it comes to TV news. Not to mention that internet streaming is becoming more & more crucial to TV news, and DSLRs are perfect for internet video. If an entire TV news department had only $350,000 to buy equipment would they buy 1 $350,000 Sony F23 or 100 7D's for half the price ?

I'm guessing your Canon-bashing is because of your business agreement with Jim Jannard & because DSLR's have basically made the HVX obsolete. If the DVX came out 5 years ago with the same specs as the 7D, you'd be peeing your pants with joy, and this site would be called "CanonUser" instead.

Some stuff we should reserve for ourselves also 'cause we can hurt other people without the due care.

Barry is a professional. It is normal he may have connections in the industry. It is a common place to take this as granted. It is not even a problem. We all know where he's used to often post, so nothing new to see here.

I wouldn't say RED is his commitment once dvxuser.com is his home. Ah OK, "I read him once to say he and Jarred are partners". What's the problem? They offer the best resource online dedicated to the filmmaking technology for FREE. Thanks guys!

Shame Canon hasn't had vision for trying to be closer of dvxuser.com, I would. You can say they don't need. It is partially true but c'mon where do you find another opinion maker like Barry Green?

He is one of the most valuable posters we all know, even if we can disagree with his points at times. You can just argue, that's all. It's always a pleasure to read him anyway.

You're like those fat chicks who think because you don't want a woman who weighs 300lbs, you must therefore only want a woman is is 95lbs soaking wet.

Barry didn't say they should carry a RED ONE. They'd probably have something more akin to an HPX-170 in those situations.

However, let's say you are running around on a battlefield, you want a camera that has CMOS rolling shutter issues, a.k.a jello? I've worked with 7D footage when it was shot handheld, and it's not a pretty sight.

We've already established that RED is not suitable for this work either.

This is getting comical, and you're probably well on your way to getting the coveted Bronze Membership.

They wouldn't buy an F23 because it is a digital cinema camera.

I swear to god, people have drank the DOF Kool-Aid, and as long as you can get that shallow focus, nothing else matters.

Let the dust settles down. The worst would be to enter in denial and to start to edit it or delete this or that. Each one has the right to his own. We can be on our own when our point is to learn and defend what we believe. This is either a forum for moviemakers and a professional forum, above all.

Why do you keep bringing up cinema style cameras when arguing for ENG use? Everyone in here has already said the RED would be terrible for that.

I respect what Barry has done for indie filming by supporting the DVX & HVX. Both the DVX & HVX are trailblazing cameras, and are still powerful tools. I just wish he supported the Canon DSLR's too instead of bashing it just because he has a new agenda other than helping indie filmmakers find the best & cheapest tools for filmmaking.

He does support them. They have their place, but people like you keep making these silly arguments that these cameras are the be-all, end-all, and they are not. The 7D can create a nice image, no question, but it has some significant issues that make it a bad choice for certain types of shooting situations.

Burying your head in the sand doesn't make any of these issues go away.
