Hero4?

I can foresee a lot of issues with this setup. How do you monitor focus, how do you record sound? Hero3 is a great camera for what it is, but this venture doesn't make much sense to me.

With an external LCD or EVF and an external sound recorder. Really, the same way it's done with DSLR's.

then use a dslr. What is the point of turning GoPro into ill fitted dslr? GoPro is great for what it is. But turning it into some sort of wannbe DSLR is just silly.

If they sort out the short life issue of the batteries, goPro has a dedicated back lcd that you can purchase separately, this could be used for framing and focusing.
For the rest, GoPro appears to have an excellent sensor, with very rich dynamic range (more than most of the DSLRs), great resolution (true 1080p HD), and the ability to record video in 50-60fps, 100-120fps, 2.7k and 4k (at a slower framerate though) for just a couple of hundreds of bucks. That only, makes this project interesting.

It can shoot 2.7k at at 24fps on a pretty decent sensor. That could be cool. It's smaller than a DSLR, so it could fit into even tinier places, which could also be useful. It could be used as a crash cam. An underwater housing for a DSLR can cost thousands... what's a case for the gopro cost, $50? You could use c-mount lenses, which is impossible on most DSLRs.

It's not practical for EVERY situation, but I can think of plenty of situations I'd be willing to risk a gopro as a b-camera where I wouldn't risk a 5D or a C300. A GoPro with a c-mount lens mount would be amazing for numerous situations, IMHO.

You can do pretty much the same with Pocket Cinema, sans higher frame rates. But it has superior codec and far better colors. I have the LCD backpack, and I can assure you it is not sufficient for focusing. It also eats battery like crazy. When you add LCD backpack and battery pack, this camera will be the same size and weight as Pocket Cinema. On the top, it will force you to record sound separately.

You can't do 2.7k resolution on the pocket cinema and I'd still maintain that I'd much rather risk a modified GoPro underwater or in a risky situation than a $1k Pocket cinema with more expensive M4/3 lenses. But to each his own.

You can't do true 2.7k resolution on the GoPro either. You can't even do true 1080p on the GoPro because it uses line skipping to reduce resolution. So the measured resolution of the 2.7k footage is definitely less than 1080p, and the measured resolution of the 1920x1080 footage is definitely less than 720p. I don't know how much less but I would be surprised if the GoPro Hero3 could generate much more than 720p measured resolution in 2.7k or more than 480p in 1080p mode.

I'm not saying this would be the be all, end all solution to every thing. But, all things considered, DSLR's don't provide true 1080p either. So again... in a high risk crash cam/underwater situation, I'd take a GoPro over a more expensive DSLR. They'll both line skip, they'll both have trade offs... but if I lose a GoPro (and I have), it sure is nice to not be out $1000-$3500.

The reason I still have to put a 5D or GH3 at risk is because I can't control the exposure/focal length/focus of a GoPro. But if I could, I'd be more than happy to live with the trade offs (no sound recording, no onboard LCD, subpar codec, and so on) and strap it to something dangerous.

Its the HER 3+

Its the HER 3+

A consumer product that is used quite often in professional broadcast applications...

The lastest is going to be the Hero 3+... its smaller, has faster WIFI and has better battery life. Also it can shoot 4K at multiple frame rates as aopposed to the 12fps with Hero3

It's the same size. However, the waterproof case is 20% smaller.

4K is still 15 fps NTSC and 12.5 PAL.

I don't know about numbers, but when I edit gopro footage intercut with 5d mark III footage, it appears that the gopro has more resolution than the DSLR. Both do line skip, but in my eyes the gopro appears to have more resolution and dynamic range than the full frame sensor.
