HDMI Capture Problem SOLVED - AviSynth RULES!

A NEW SCRIPT FOR 1080 60i FOOTAGE

It took quite a while, but here it is. I've updated the first post with a new script for 1080 60i.
I know people around here are primarily intersted in progressive and tend to brush interlace aside.
But, if you have a GH2 and an HDMI capture device, I would encourage you to shoot some 1080 60i material.
It's really quite beautiful and way superior to the in-camera 720 60P.

Nice work. Can't wait to see some footage from this. I think there's definately use for it.

BATCH PROCESSING

I have been successfully batch processing HDMI clips using a program PDR pointed out. I thought it would be helpful to have a section in the first post describing it, and giving the link. So, it's there now.

Thanks Ralph -
The gh2 is now the no excuses camera!

Well, there's still the issue of getting a good field recorder. The Nanoflash works, but at $3k it's not an option for most people. I hope the Atomos Ninja works out, because it would be the perfect compliment to the GH2.

Hang in there - we're making solid progress on the remaining few firmware issues. It's taken much longer than we predicted but the great results we're getting are worth waiting for! (NB - haven't tested with the GH-2 in any way yet!).

Thank you so much for replying. It's good to know we've got your attention!
As one who has developed software (in my little way), I can well imagine the complexity of the problems you're going through.

I know it's a little early to be requesting features on a product that hasn't shipped, but I want to put this out to you for future consideration.
Please implement a Peaking function on the Ninja's LCD screen. A problem all DSLR's have is it's so difficult to focus them while shooting, and peaking solves this. I was thrilled to learn that the Ninja could double as a monitor, and peaking would make it a grand slam home run!

David,
thanks for the update.
I know that your team is working hard on this firmware, but can you please share the release date?
I ordered (and paid....) the Ninja 1 month ago and I'm sure there are other people out there as impatient as me to put our hands on this recorder.
Best,
Diego

Has the HDMI output from a PAL GH2 been tested/captured yet? If the PAL GH2 outputs 24p in 50i, it might be a more consistent pulldown (unless Panasonic crippled it in some other way).

Several months ago I applied a modified script to a piece of 24P/50i PAL footage, and I successfully extracted the picture. However, the source footage had many capture glitches in it (unrelated to the GH2) and it was impossible to fix those. If someone were to post a clean 24P PAL HDMI capture, I would be happy to "put it through the paces".

Just in case you hadn't heard elsewhere, the Ninja is now shipping. Thanks for your patience!

I wonder if the Ninja pro res recorder will get a firmware update that has a "gh2 mode" that will apply all these processes so it records the footage clean without having to post process.

I hope they are at least working on it. i'd much rather have a Gh2 and a Ninja than a Af100 and kiPro.

nice idea :)

Can someone post footage of HDMI capture? Well shot and under good lighting conditions?

And if you have any greenscreen samples I'd appreciate being able to test footage that has been run through AVI synth.

I'm gonna guess unlikely... I somehow don't think it has the hardware/processing capabilty to do the various processes on the fly. I think it'd need custom hardware for it... but I could be wrong. Granted doing the process in avisynth just may not be that efficient and some higher level coding of an algorithm might require less processing power. I dunno. All I know is in avisynth on a Quadcore, it's not nearly realtime.

First NINJA footage from EU GH2

First NINJA footage from EU GH2

Hello all.

My Atomos Ninja arrived today and i hooked up the GH2 right away!
The Ninja showed "i50" when the GH2 was switched on. There was no difference in behavior or display when recording was hit on the GH2, or when the display mode was altered.
UPDATE: i expected the Ninja to display "i60"?! If i read the first post in this thread, that's what i'd assume.

I accidentally left the display on, but it doesn't influence the way Ninja records the image.

The GH2 is a european model from december 2010.

I am not experienced with removing pulldown or reversed telecine et cetera. I use FCP and cinematools. Willing to start using Avisynth, no problem, but if i can extract the 24p from this footage on my mac, that would be great!

The link below is a filesharing link and i haven't found out how many downloads are allowed. Please report any problems and i'll try to store it elsewhere, or use the alternative (slower) link.

Sequel to my previous post...

Call me stupid but... If i run the GH2/Ninja footage above through MPEG StreamClip, converting to ProRes444 and setting "Frame Blending", "Better Downscaling" and "DeInterlace Video" i get an acceptable and usable file to edit in FCP. Or am i missing anything here...?!
If the pulldown-cadence-wizards can have a look at this, that'd be great.

Martin.
