Having some af100+nanflash trouble...

Hey all,

I got my AF100 this past week and have it hooked up to the nanoflash. I also have a Small HD DP1 monitor that I am attempting to connect to my af100 through HDMI, however I am encountering a problem. I have the camera set to 24psf and the nanoflash keeps flashing "No 24psf out through HDMI". I turned the 24psf off and I was able to get an image on my monitor, however the nanoflash was showing 1080/30 as the resolution. I then went to the menu in the nanoflash to turn on the 3:2 pulldown, however the nanoflash kept flashing "check 3:2 source". What can I do to get 1080/24p while being able to use my monitor?

I am using a similar rig with a SmallHD 5.6. Does your DP1 have HDSDI in?
If so, why not go out the Nano HDSDI to HDSDI into the monitor.

This is a known problem with the current Nanoflash firmware. It can't detect the pulldown in the SDI stream yet since the AF100 uses a non standard pulldown. They are working on a firmware update for the Nanoflash that will fix this. For now the only way to get 24p is the use psf. When the psf is enabled the HDMI in the AF100 gets shut off and the psf signal can't be converted in the Nanoflash to come out the Nano's HDMI port. So unfortunately you are going to have to either shoot 30p or only use one of your devices at a time until the new Nanoflash firmware is released.

Brian,

Thank you for the information, I really appreciate it. Do you know if there is any way to sign up for some sort of email/newsletter that convert design may have so I know when this update is released?

I had what I thought was a similar problem with my Nano and TVLogic. But there's a totally perfect solution. Go into your video playback menu and you will see a selection regarding psf on or off, or something like that. I don't have it in front of me to tell you what it says. Anyway, either select it or uncheck it. It will, when set properly, send a compatible video signal out the hdmi output of the nanoflash that your monitor will see. I use sdi from the AF to Nano, and sdi out of nano to TVLogic, and simultaneous HDMI out the Nano to a 20" 1080p Samsung syncmaster monitor which is 2 years old and looks awesome with that feeding it. Great to see live monitor/record, as well as playback check. I will check my exact Nano settings and edit this post later.

So let me get this straight. Psf is selected on the AF100, and psf is unchecked on the Nanoflash? Doing this gets you a true 24p file and not 24p embedded in a 30p file, as well as HDMI passthru/conversion?

I'm not sure about a newsletter but I frequently check the Nanoflash forum CD started at dvinfo.net for the latest info and updates.

OK, so I'm back home and am looking at my Nano. The setup is this: AF100 1080 24 psf, Nanoflash Video Input - Record PSF: checked on, Video Output Play Psf: No, no check. You do not want to have PsF playback on. Keep it off.

From there, Nanoflash HDMI output goes to the big 20" Samsung, while the SDI goes to the TV Logic. (btw, TV Logic will accept the signal as either PsF or not).

Hope this helps.

Wow, thank you very much for this. I don't own a Nanoflash yet but have used it many times on jobs and haven't found a way to do this. I can't wait to test it out. Thanks again.

bhdfield, thanks for your going the extra mile to help out our members. This is what DVXUser is all about, and it's appreciated!

Glad those settings work for the TV Logic. They dont work for the SmallHD DP1. Can anyone confirm if they work for the DP6?

Thanks for all the input, it's been greatly appreciated! I do have one question, though. I just did some test footage for the first time with the nanoflash@220mbps and the af100. When importing the footage to FCP, it is only showing 26mbps at the bitrate....any idea why that is?

How about 720/24p using Nanoflash with AF100?

How about 720/24p using Nanoflash with AF100?

Thanks for all the info posted in this thread!

I have a job coming up that requires footage shot at 720/24p. Need to use the Nanoflash, because it's a quick turnaround event and I need MXF files for quick ingest into an Avid. But I've read that the Nanoflash won't do 720/24 for the AF100. Is this true?

Thanks for any help!

If you register your serial number on the creative design website they will email you notices of all the firmware updates, and notifiy you of beta releases if you want them. I get a regular stream of Nano updates. There has been a huge number of feature increases through the firmware.

Once you register your nanoflash with convergent design they usually send you updates (to your registered email). All the guys at that company are very helpful - Dan Keaton & Andy Mangrum are very active over at dvinfo.net, but I think I've seen Dan posting here to.
At the moment they are working on the new Gemini system, once that is released they will get back to work on the nanoflash firmware (the Af101 fix is meant to be in the next patch).

Hello Everyone,

The nanoFlash works very well with the TVLogic Monitor as well as the Small HD DP6 Monitor, both are very good confidence monitors that are a good companion with the nanoFlash.

Record PSf should only be used when recording 1080p30 or 1080p25

the AF100 can output a 24PSF out of the SDI out, so nanoFlash will auto-detect it and will display 1080sf23 which will record a 1080p23.98 to the nanoFLash, without the need of Record Psf or 3:2 Removal,

Play PSF is used in conjunction with 3:2 removal if you have a monitor that does not support 1080p24 or 1080p30, it will play the files back at 1080i 48(24p) or (30p) 59.94 just as the signal was originally received to the nanoFlash,

And 3:2 pulldown is used to record 1080p24 or 720p24 with various camera's that cannot output a 24psf out, (Canon XHG1, XHl1, XF305, HDX 900 etc)

Which Unfortunately 3:2 Removal is broken in the current release only with the AF100 (Which you can record 1080p24 via 24psf Out set on the camera) but it will not apply this to the 720p24 settings, as well as this does mean that you are currently unable to record 720p24 (Via 3:2 Removal)

We are working on a Fix, Since the AF100 has a Different 3:2 cadence, then used in their previous camera's, If you are a registerd user you will be notified when we release a new firmware version with the fix implemented.

Also Note that E to E direct can be used to see an unmodified signal straight to a monitor, and likewise if you turn on screen tally, it will give you a solid recording bar on your confidence monitor to let you know that you are recording, also E to E and all settings are applied to SDI out as well as HDMI Out, and the signal is broadcast simultaneously to both.

As for the Final Cut Pro Issue it reports the bit rate as MegaBytes a second as apposed to MegaBit, (Factor of 8) so Multiply that by 8 and you will have 220Mb, you can also check this in Quicktime Player 7 with the Movie inspector or Apple I,

Hope That Helps
