Re: Handmade Zoom Control with Record Start/Stop

..spring loaded pot. returns to center. same as having spring loaded rocker switch thats on the dvx.

Re: Handmade Zoom Control with Record Start/Stop

I thought of a pot that could return via a spring but had no luck finding one one the web.

Here's another reason for a momentary switch rather than a pot.: if you use a pot you will not know at what point it will go from slow to medium to high.

If one switch with a 2k ohm resistor and the other switch with an 18k, the should work for zoom in and zoom out.

you could also use several momemtary switches with several speeds. you'd just need to know the ohms for the other switches, though. In fact without too much work you could use two momentarys and one master turning switch with slow, medium and low on it--It would be easy to design this circuit.

Re: Handmade Zoom Control with Record Start/Stop

Has anyone thought about putting a slide potentiometer or maybe a joystick pot in place of the turn knob pot?

DIY zoom controller with BUTTONS for Zoom In & Zoom Out

DIY zoom controller with BUTTONS for Zoom In & Zoom Out

Has anyone built (or know how to build) a DIY zoom controller using buttons (zoom in & zoom out) instead of the potentiometer as mentioned in post#36 (http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showpost.php?p=23823&postcount=36 )?

And how diffiuclt would it be to build a zoom controller using button controls instead of the pot for someone who is not familiar with electronics?

Thanks Jarred,
it's always nice to see people making innovations that work for people on a budget. $10 for a zoom controller is pretty sweet.

Hi All,

If you need a Great Inexpensive Zoom, Check Out ZoomBuddy:

http://www.photovideoalbums.com/zb/

I am making these zoom controllers for people who do not have the time, energy, or tools to make a nice zoom controller.

I have sold a few to users on this forum, and will give you there User names if you want to get an unbiased opinion from another user.

I did some testing of different zoom types:

1. Buttons.. they work but since its digital, it does not transition smoothly, except for the slowest speed.

2. A slide Pot... works, but you don't have much precision control with 1 finger. The Zoom Buddy uses a knob that can be used with a finger, or for more control a thumb and finger. So you get a push pull tension on the knob.

3. Spring Centered... not needed. DVX only has 3 zoom speeds. And it is very easy to control the zoom speed without it auto centering.

I am actually looking at making a remote Focus control system. I have several designs I am working on to see which gives the most bang for the buck.

I am looking to have full manual, and 2 pre-set focus points.

zoomforce, if you are still around, did you ever consider making these for the electrically challenged?

I just checked it from the forum, it seems to be working. Try copying and pasting it into your web browser... let me know if that works for you.

Sorry, my website got moved last week and if your are getting a 403 access denied error, I just found out about it. I hope to have it fixed tomorrow.

Bena,
The picture on your site shows what appears to be an adaptor attached to the camera that your Zoom Buddy plugs into. Is this a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adaptor? Just curious about any additional strain (if any) on the camera socket itself.
The unit looks very well made.

It does use an adaptor. Very little stress is put on the socket. I was hand soldering a 2.5mm male plug, but found that that the solder would break, do to the fact that the core was solid and solder would not stick, and if I made it stick it ended up melting the plastic. I could not find a decent 2.5mm plug with solder tabs.

I wish there was a better way myself, if I could find a 90 degree version I would use that in a heart beat.
