If you go to radio shack they sell a 2.5mm 90 degree adapter. I did the same thing as you Ben (3.5 to 2.5) for the very same reasons, but I wasn't happy with that long adapter hanging out - so I found that 90 degree adapter and it works great.

Oh, and the 90 degree adapter at radio shack is listed as 3/32" not 2.5mm (that threw me at first).
