Gibby's ENG love

I know how Gibby LOVES ENG work.. Well, perhaps he doesn't but he talks about it a bit..

That said, is RED going to have a couple of Mini Outs for headphones?

Someone also mentioned that RED will be making use of MiniXLR jacks.. Are they tough enough for ENG work?

I am leading somewhere here: To be an ENG camera, there are specific design elements required to be built into the system. Is there someone on the RED team that is aware of those needs and seeing to it that they make it into the camera.

I'd hate to see the look on Gibby's face if they don't

Gulp...putting me on the spot Jay. No worries...

I just LOVE motion media work of any sort, but yes ENG-style sports, adventure travel, reality, and documentaries are some of my favorite genres to work in! In those genres of shows, they are still not all ENG-style. The inbumps, outbumps, creative montages, and lookback montages, are all shot cine-style, oftentimes with shallow DOF, controlled lighting , etc. Then back to a more "immediate" look for the middle of segments. Thus, lens and accessory changes, and shooting style changes are constant throughout the shooting day - and a camera system that can support rapid changes would be the bomb.

RED One is positioned primarily as a digital cinema camera, but it's no secret that myself, and the scores of other crossover director/DP/ cam op guys that work in both cine-style and ENG-style, would love to see RED One be easily adaptable to ENG-style work. RED is listening and has heard all the feedback and input. I'm sure that whatever they finalize for the camera specs will be a result of weighing a lot of factors, like time constraints for development, potential market size, and time/cost-effectiveness to incorporate requests.

Mini XLR would be workable. It would be cool if the jacks have a locking mechanism so that the cables don't fall out easily in mobile production. A mini-pin for headphones seems so logical and necessary that I'd be surprised if they didn't include one.

I think the look on my face will be a smile :) no matter what they finalize for specs...but it would be a bigger smile :dankk2: if the versatility, and thus revenue generating potential, of the camera was enhanced by relatively easy ENG-style adaptability. I also shoot tons of cine-style stuff, so I think I'll be real happy with it's performance there, based on the preliminary specs.

He isn't the only one...and I think that point is already and definitely scheduled -- right?

RED will be a cine-style camera and an ENG one, as well. Or am I wrong?

Regarding his own talent, effort, good will and knowledge, besides his friendly way of being, I vote for his name to a sort of RED customer's rep like a true procurator of all of us, our spokesman.

His both RED purposes and interests made him as the perfect RED user to this job.

If you Steve will be available to this, of course.

Cheers  and :dankk2: for your useful support and help to our beloved new digital camera development.

If RED wants to be a usable ENG camera, then it MUST offer (at least) 2 FULL SIZE XLR audio inputs. - Among other important ENG features.

To be honest, I don't see RED as an ENG camera at all. Who the heck is goign to shoot news thwe way that RED shoots? I don't see any news crews with 16mm or 35mm cameras today. In ENG content is king, there is really no place for RED ONE in the news world in it's current form.

Wow...thank you for the kind words and vote of confidence Emanuel. I think everyone interested in RED shares a common bond, wherever they live in world, and whatever style of production they do. I'm just happy to be one of the many people who have voiced their interest and support for RED. I'm not blind, and I'm sure RED isn't. They've come a long way, and there is still a long, perilous way to go. I think RED will meet their goals and deliver an excellent camera, or else I wouldn't be bothering to post here. I also think it is way cool that independent web portal owners like Jarred have stepped up to provide a site where we can compare notes about RED, including our likes, dislikes, experiences, and hopes.

Cheers Emanuel!

Agreed Mikko, actual news production would be a longshot for RED. When Jay made his post, he was referring to ENG-style production, rather than Electronic News Gathering. ENG-style being non-hardlined mobile production of sports, travel, reality, certain documantaries, certain events, etc. RED One is primarily positioned as a digital cinema camera, but with certain simple features it could be adapted for ENG-style production as I've listed above - not news gathering. There are vast numbers of crossover directors, DPs, and camera operators who now shoot cine-style and ENG-style. In fact, I'd estimate that there are more of them in the world than there are strictly cine-style or strictly ENG-style shooters.

Steve, you are our man.. you understand us.. my vote is yours.. even if you aren't a self-candidate, you are ours!

Aah, You are refering to EFP (Electronic Field Production for those that don't know). A very different ballgame, and definatly a Place where RED might be able to fit in, if it can provide the right type of features.

To me ENG is strictly news, I think this thread is more about EFP. Carry on...

You're right!

You're correct Mikko, it's definately EFP. I intentionally used ENG-style because ENG is a much more recognizable term to most people than EFP, but technically it is EFP-style. Non-hardlined production is the key point, athough with the number of inputs/outputs RED has proposed in their spec sheet, hardlined use of RED should be an easy thing to set up.

You're completely there, my friend! This will be a success if featured -- as Mikko well posted.

So, the first one is definitely the point to achieve. I hope Jim may hear our prayers.

I didn't know that Mathieu reads DVX User, but I'm pleased to hear he does! I have great respect for his work, from what I've seen of it. I would like to see more of his work when I get a chance...

The Internet has truly made the world smaller - especially in the motion media industry. Very cool...

haha...
it kind of tends to go that way

I personally would like to keep RED out of ENG as much as possible. I think it diserves projects that have a life span longer than one day. Superb image quality should be kept for special things.

I hope RED's sales policy in the future won't allow large tv-companies to purchase large quantities of RED just so their program could have the best picture quality. The price range could easily initiate their decision.

I´d rather have 4 Mini-XLR´s than 2 full size ones - and the other two only available internal for some kind of unusable built in camera mike.

A only two channel audio-out is ok. And of course a mini jack headphones out!

omen don't mix up the things.. as it was posted, EFP isn't the same than ENG.. we want a handheld tool.. a light set up.. not another 35mm camera.. bah

Viva La Nouvelle Red Vague!.. this would be.. this will be a revolution like the 60s were.. if EFP suitable , of course..

Opinion stays the same concerning tv-companies, though.
