GH5 GH5 to Alexa Conversion

I got this but am new to log. If your lut says max IRE 80, Sould I set zebras to 80 or 75. Anything over 80 will clip the highlights, right? Skintones will still be around 60-65 ire on zebras?

Sorry for the newbie questions. From the few tests I’ve done so far I’m really liking the “soft” variant.

Thanks tiki988; Its a matter of choice - I set them at 80. Anything above that will clip. Bright skintone areas can place there.
Overall the target for exposing for emotive color is middle gray at 40 (if you've got a middle gray reference card) Its largely flexible to exposure placement though
Throw any extreme color or highlight at it, and you'll find the result to be awesome ;) Here are some stills with V2 Main (no other change):

Thanks. I appreacite the response. I dont have a middle grey card so setting exposure for me is zebras and waveform right now.

One better - you actually only need the base clip in Resolve (no second Opacity layer needed)

My new favorite Resolve Single Node OLPF:

*Note: these settings are for working in a 2K timeline (I shoot 2K All-I, and the Alexa C is 2K), they may change when at 4K

Hey Sage, just wanted to see if there were any updates as far as the gh5s was concerned? Cheers!

I recently learned that a friend works with someone, who knows someone who has one. We're looking into trying to line things up, so there is a possibility there. I've got this other entirely new cool thing too

Well that's all very specific!

Emotive Color "Verde"

Emotive Color "Verde"

Emotive Color "Verde"
v2.2 Release

EC Component:

  • Saturation Target Revision
  • L'Abbée 709 Hue Lock-In
  • Soft and Pop Luma Revision

Core LogC:

  • Multipass Refinement Technique (Maximal Accuracy; for example, accurate Tungsten far red)
  • New Smoothing Pass
  • Fixed Red Highlight Artifact (Bright Red Traffic Lights Hyper-Saturation)

Additional Notes:

  1. OLPF settings have been revised to take into account the larger sensor area of modern 3.2k/LF Alexas and real world GH5 footage testing
  2. Added guidance for optimal DaVinci Resolve luma grading tools; In the Color Wheels section, use the more organic Shadows/Highlights (under Tab 2) instead of LIft/Gain, which allow crushing of detail to 0 and 100 IRE, respectively. Contrast/Pivot (Tab 1) and the Gamma slider are safe tools (see attached Color Wheels image)
  3. Like in Premiere, the Resolve Luma curve also distorts hue. To address this (when using it for more than black level placement as in Pdf, i.e. 'curvy'), you can qualify the Luma curve node with a Layer Mixer *set to 'Hue' composite mode*, and an empty node ('hue passthrough') routed to the bottom slot of the Layer Mixer (Thanks to David L'Abbée for this discovery)
  4. Firecrest Full Spectrum NDs recommended for reference performance (better for GHa than IRNDs, such as Hoya Pro)
  5. PDF updated to reflect changes (Pages 3, 8, 9, and 10)
  6. Raw Footage Side-by-Sides updated to reflect Verde, with 16 bit Tif Stills Only versions added (much smaller download)
  7. All-I (2K or 4K) VLog recommended; Sunlight & Halogen recommended as reference light sources (for respective conversions)

Raw v2.2 Video:

(No color grading, black level placement, or post WB correction [Sunny WB preset in cam for day shots]; only the Main conversion directly on VLog)
*For Color Accuracy - Please watch in Microsoft Edge, Explorer, Safari, Chrome with the sRGB Dev fix, or Chrome (Mac Edition) - *Avoid Firefox! (Or download 'Original' file on Vimeo for total fidelity)

I also sent you an email with my invoice number because I'm a GH5S owner, and I'd like to get the update for that in the future. Did you receive it?

Hey Sage, these are really cool updates!

I hate to bug you on this, but I only ask because as cool as these are I think myself (and I'm guessing a number of others!) have limited use for them when they don't support the GH5s and EVA1. For me, these three cameras do everything, and as much as I love this conversion, when 1/3 cameras works it means I can't use it.

Any news or estimated roadmap on full v-log / v-gamut support the Panasonic line?

Regarding access to the EVA1, do you have a system down where you could use the camera for a weekend to gather all of the footage you need to design the LUT? If so, perhaps a weekend rental would allow you the needed access for development?

Let us as the community know what sort of things could help expediate the development of the GH5s/EVA1 LUTs so that we can truly utilize your brilliant and hard work on this! It's killing me that I can't make use of it!

Its definitely something I'm thinking about (the 'Model 3'). What has to be the case before I expand to several cameras, is that I need to make sure that my process is absolutely perfect, and that supporting a new camera can be done without compromise of quality (perfect from Day 1). As an army of one, efficiency is key when it comes to exponential matters. V2.2 'Verde' goes a long way to my feeling that the process and quality are where they need to be. Model 3 next.

Hi all,
I used version 2.2 to start the grade on the latest music video I shot on my GH5s.
Obviously, there's a lot else going on in the grade to get it to this messy/retro look,
but EmotiveColour has been working great for me to get the footage out of Vlog so I can start going wild on the look.
