GH4 GH5 Early Footage Thread

There are a few color grading videos too (the one I found was in Da Vinci but I am sure there are others).

Downloaded the clips. The clips are 1080 of course which means right now are limited to 8bit 4:2:0 material. With that said they are impressive and if I had to make a wild guess would say they are better than the 96fps mode on the GH4.

They are only 4:2:0 and 26 Mbit/s but the GH5 V-Log grades so much better than the GH4's. The problems they had with the GH4 V-log internal seems to have been fixed.

That's awesome news! I wonder if the bitrate will be increased any further after the April 4:2:2 10 bit update is released for FHD. I know thats only up to 60p, but I am wondering if it might net a higher bitrate in 4:2:0 on upper end as well.

Not sure I would go that far yet. Sometimes internal GH4 V-log clips would look fine. It may be improved but it is too early to say it is 100% fixed.

That's my feeling after playing with several of these clips. I'm not seeing the magenta color blocking issues and I can push the grade much harder without it falling apart. It was the assumption with the GH4 that it was the lower bit rates and color sampling that was the cause of the lousy internal VLog, but I think it was something else in the processing chain.

Yeah those things showed the problem easier but they were not the sole cause of the issues. The encoder was to blame for all the ugly artifacts. External 8bit recording looked much better.

I did see some magenta in the white wall of the guy standing in a kitchen holding up his hand. The one where he eventually starts his hand on fire. Some of the previous clips Paul Leeming also mentioned he still noticed some color artifacts in the 8bit clips. It may be greatly reduced but it might still be there. A side by side will really have to be done to know for sure just how much it is improved. When I first got V-log on the GH4 I shot a dozen internal clips that didn't have any artifacts at all. Eventually I did shoot some material that showed the ugly artifacts so it doesn't always show up. Thats the only reason why I say we need a side by side to know for sure just how much it has been improved.
