GH4 GH5 Early Footage Thread

I gotta be honest... now that I have a better understanding of modern digital cameras, I've noticed all the magenta and/or greenish hues in the whites/grays of a LOT of commercial productions from movies and shows. It doesn't kill the story at all, but I notice it as a tech artifact. :) Kinda like rolling shutter skew.

Is there some dithering in h.265 file. I saved GH5 6k photo sample frame and added 80% saturation in Photoshop. It revealed lots of garbage and dithering at pixel level crop. Is this typical h.265 image structure?

What does it look like without the 80% saturation boost ?

H265 is an impressive format but it is still highly compressed. This is also firmware 0.43 so please stop judging the quality before the camera is released. The quality of the encoder is something they may need to work on yet. As the first Panasonic camera with H265 encoding it may not be up to optimal standards or the full potential of what H265 can someday provide.

Really I say wait until firmware 1.0 is out before passing judgement.

I am sure Panasonic is making some fixes to final FW. I think we have still right to analyse current examples. Panasonic is also interested in our opinions and they may increase bitrates or compression quality if we need better quality. They made it with GH4 FW 1.1.

80% saturation is for making image structure visible. I wonder where comes this dithering? It may be good thing to remove banding.

Here are crops from the same 6k photo file opened in Photoshop at 16bit and converted to 8bit JPG. Looks much better than my versions extracted with Potplayer. I see no dithering.

The hand held footage seems to have a lot of micro jitters seen especially around the upper green foliage?

Not sure if it's micro-jitters or just the 5-Axis working hard to stabilize. Even the 5-Axis has its limits. You have to take some care to still be steady, and when the camera operator is blabbing is when it's at its worst.

Hi
Maby a stupid qestion, but what happens if I put a 18-35mm Sigma art (aps-c lens) + metabones speedbooster on the new GH5? Whats the focallenght going to be?
Thanx!

If you're using the regular Speedbooster, the same equivalent focal length it would be on an APS-C camera. On the Speedbooster XL, it becomes APS-H, which means you might see some vignetting. The GH5 has no extra crop in 4k (2.0 crop), while on the GH4 it was a 2.3x crop in 4k.

For video, the GH5 crop factor is 2.08 in HD and UHD, compared to full-frame video (5D, A7 etc).

So simply multiply that, by the strength of your booster, by the lens' focal length.

2.08 X .71 (Speedbooster Ultra) X 18 = 26.6mm

2.08 X .71 (Speedbooster Ultra) X 35mm = 51.7mm

Make sure you get the .71X Speedbooster, as the Sigma will vignette with the .64X version.

People post up lies in hopes of clickbait to boost views and monetize their videos...

Pretty sure thats not GH5 footage, just based on the season. It's January. That's quite clearly spring in the USA...
