B&H has a nice video presentation on it.

Am I correct in understanding that the XLR breakout is hot shoe only... ie cant be mounted with a cage and cant be used on GH4?

Anyone find any GH4 VS GH5 footage yet?

Bern, any indication about which, if any features will be cost extras to be unlocked with a software key? Have heard rumors that 10 bit, V-Log (confirmed by your list above) and possibly other features will cost extra but I have no idea if that is true? Any indication of how much those additional features will cost? I have not seen the camera in person but the audio module looks as if it will be easy to break off, hope there is a way to replace just the shoe on the audio module by the user. Also, are you able to add any observations about noise levels in the image above 800 ISO and if the color science is the same as the GH4 or was it changed?

Thanks!

Panasonic seems adamant to get the "high-res on a budget" crown.
Dear Sony and BlackMagic: your move!

Edit: that HDR option could make me interested on a Panasonic camera this time around. Give this the DR of the varicam and we're in business!

(I wouldn't be interested, just give me 4k and improve fps and DR instead; 4k at 60 fps with the DR of the FS7 for $3K gets my preorder, specially if it is FF or at least APF-C with possibility of a speedbooster)

But the 8K --> 4K subsampling with improved DR would be fantastic (I'm assuming both would have 4K modes...Blackmagic definitely would)...just what you want!

I did not Beta Test the GH4, & only consulted on features I'd like incorporated. Back then the GH5 was just several blocks of rubber, & Panasonic was open to ideas, though they already had many of the specs determined.

Two requests that didn't make the cut were False Color, & tilting EVF.

One of the huge advantages of the GH5 is its expandability, including live monitoring and recording over HDMI while simultaneously recording internally to an SD card. It also comes with an HDMI Cable Lock Holder accessory. Shooters will have access to a 4K 4:3 anamorphic video mode at up to 60 fps, with firmware updates promised to upgrade this feature in the future. Other benefits include a dedicated GUI for videographers, which includes access to settings such as Gain and Shutter Angles, a waveform or vectorscope monitor display, and luminance level settings for 10-bit video. Finally, not to forget about audio, Panasonic has implemented a redesigned microphone with enhanced noise suppression and created a DMW-XLR1 XLR Microphone Adapter that connects via the camera’s hot shoe and adds physical audio controls and two XLR inputs to the GH5.

These video capabilities are in addition to an extremely capable set of still-imaging features, including 4K PHOTO and 6K PHOTO modes with rolling shutter distortion correction for ensuring you don’t miss a shot. These record either 18MP stills at 30 fps using HEVC or 8MP stills at 60 fps using H.264 to provide a series of high-res stills for users to choose from. Also, it has a customizable 225-area Advanced Depth-From-Defocus AF system that is faster and more accurate, able to lock on in less than 0.05 second and, with the addition of a joystick to the camera, choosing an AF point is much faster and more intuitive. Speed is definitely a theme in the GH5, with 12 fps continuous shooting with AF-S and 9 fps with AF-C for up to 100 raw frames at full resolution.

A major change is the implementation of two SD card slots, both of which are UHS-II compatible, for auto switching, creating an automatic backup, or selecting which files are saved to which card for organization. Also, five-axis Dual I.S. 2.0 makes its appearance on the flagship GH series, here using a five-axis in-body stabilization system and a two-axis lens stabilizer. This system can provide about five stops of compensation for camera movement and shake, ensuring sharp, blur-free imagery.

In addition to this, the magnesium-alloy body has received numerous improvements, including the addition of freeze-proofing down to 14°F to the splash- and dustproofing. The rear 3.2" RGBW free-angle touchscreen LCD receives a resolution bump to 1.62m-dots while the OLED viewfinder is almost entirely revised, featuring much improved 3.68m-dot resolution, a large 0.76x equivalent magnification, and an eyepoint of 21mm. The physical controls have been optimized and now include a rear joystick and the placement of the video Record button on the top of the camera.

Additionally, the GH5 now offers a USB 3.1 port for fast image transfer and tethering. A new DMW-BGGH5 Battery Grip is available for extending battery life and improving ergonomics during vertical shooting.

Those looking for wireless connectivity will be pleased with the introduction of 5GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy that will make pairing with a smartphone much easier. The full-time Bluetooth connection can communicate with the phone to switch to Wi-Fi to transfer images to the smartphone—all automatically, as well as to auto geotag phones with the smartphone GPS, remotely wake up the camera, and copy and set settings from one camera to another.

Been down the Amazing Specs road a few times the last couple of years, including owning the original GH4. I need to see independent DR and high ISO tests before I can get excited.

I wouldn't expect too much... ISO 1600 should look like ISO 800 now and could probably be pushed as far as ISO 3200 with Noise Reduction. DR looks to basically be the GH4 in vlog, but with quality internal recording, so no need for an external setup.

That said, 12 usable stops internal recording with good flexibility when pushing and pulling the footage in post, and twice the usable light isn't bad, considering the sensor also has a number of other improvements along with everything else.

This is still a M43 camera.

It will probably be a great camera.

But there's nothing like good ole fashion excitement. FS7II probably just lost hundreds of preorders, ha.

Sony needs something more compelling than the FS5 in the middle ground. A pro A7S, or a lightweight FS7 that's not as stripped as FS5.

A7S style body, but a little larger and heavier (still lighter than FS5, still in compact body)
2.5lbs with battery and memory
S35 or FF sensor
14 stops DR in slog3
internal 4K 4:2:2 10bit 60p to match Panasonic (GH5 may or may not unlock IPB 4k 60p 10b422 @ 400mbps firmware update0
180fps FHD
VFR mode like Panasonic
Built in electronic ND filter

This really isn't that far out there - heck, we may see something close to that with the A7S iii. In fact, those may be very close specs for the A7S iii.

If Panasonic had an S35 version of GH5 it could be that camera.

In the meantime, GH5 is awesome, except for m43 sensor, which is doing surprisingly well but still the one drawback to an otherwise stellar package.

In a world of compromises, the GH5 is incredibly compelling for a very attractive price.

It's 100% compatible with the Hot Rod Cameras Kung Fu Cinema System Cage, which is available now exclusively at Hot Rod Cameras and will have another public unveiling around the time the GH5 starts shipping.

There was both fair and unfair criticism of the performance of the GH4. At the time it was released it was totally unrivaled for image quality and performance per dollar spent.

I've been involved with the GH-series since before there was a GH1, back in the era of the G1. Panasonic looks to reset the bar with each GH camera. I can assure you that they have done that again.

The GH5 makes beautiful images, simply stunning. That's what people will remember, and that's what owners will love.

They've added a ton more features that makes the camera better for both professionals and amateurs. They also did not ignore the high-high end, for which I (and others) pushed them really hard.

There's still more (good) secrets of the camera that will be revealed.

As a thank you to Hot Rod's customers, the people who already did the $20 GH5 deposit from Hot Rod (and our newsletter subscribers) will get those details and see new footage before it goes out to anyone else.

Super35 is great, but it is not the be all end all. As has been said many times, it is a 4/3 sensor not an MFT. MFT is a mount standard not a sensor. Beautiful (Oscar winning) movies have been shot with much smaller formats. It's far better to have a great sensor than a larger one that is inferior.
