GH5 Available for Pre-Order at $2k, amazing features.

Very interesting, Olympics' games are planned to be held from 2020, but I'm little worried about future, they will provide also 16K in future or this race will stop? In Italy I think it's impossible to stream 8K, because fiber optic is available just in some regions, I think that in 2020 4K will be more available in my country. A whole different thing entirely will be in USA or Japan, where technology is very competitive.

An interview with Yosuke Yamane, Director of Panasonic’s Imaging Division.

Don't tell Mitch.
From the article: "‘4:2:2 10-bit codec is 64x as much data as before"

No it isn't.

10 bit carries 4 times as much information as 8 bit and 4:2:2 carries 1 1/3 times as much information as 4:2:0, so it is a total of 5 1/3 times the information.
The total extra storage requirement is much less than that.

That number did seem a bit funky to me as well. Plus the GH4 also processed at 4:2:2 10bit. Just couldn't encode that into a file. The camera would however pump out true 4:2:2 10bit via HDMI so the processing engine was doing the same.

I think he may be combining a lot of other factors into that amount such as reading the full sensor and using their new 9 pixel surrounding averaging to down convert to 4k. That right there could account for the massive amount of extra data processing. The GH4 cropped the sensor so there was absolutely no extra processing taking place besides handling of the bayer sensor. The GH5 is doing a lot to the pixels of that sensor which accounts for a huge amount of extra processing. I believe he just used the codec as a simple explanation to all the crap going on in the processing engine to get to that point.

Is it just my unit, or is peaking excessive on all GH5 under the latest firmware? No matter High or Low, particularly in the viewfinder it's all over the scene! At first I thought this is noise, when I aimed the lens towards a rather dark place... In such a dark scenery, peaking should be minimal, only here and there on really contrasty edges...Here almost all pixels of the VF are busy! The monitor is not that bad, perhaps simply because it's lower contrast. There is almost no difference between the High and Low settings (apart from the color), and "busy pixels" are everywhere (not just edges - even flat black surfaces like a blank PC screen)...

So please tell me - is my brand new unit malfunctioning already? TIA

What is the aperture and focal length of the lens you are using?

Different lenses, but it's the worst with short focal lengths, of course - that's obvious.

So what I experience is not a known issue with he current firmware, or something? Because I first noticed it after having done 2 things (it was fine before):

- upgraded the firmware
- configured HDMI and connected Zacuto EVF

Nobody else thinks the peaking is excessive?

Piotr

If you're using a Zacuto EVF, isn't the peaking done by the EVF rather than by the GH5?

No - I only mentioned connecting Zacuto and configuring HDMI for it as one of the few configuration changes I made. And reasonably thinking, it shouldn't have any impact on the internal GH5 peaking in its own VF...
