GH4 Gh4 vs. Af100 dymanic range?

Quick question: I'm assuming the the GH4 has more DR than the AF100, but does anybody know how much more latitude I can expect in terms of fstops? (BTW-using CineD)

Any info would be much appreciated!

Not sure about AF100 but GH4 is about 10 (or 9, if one's being conservative). With the V-Log, you are looking at 12, which is what one gets with the stills Raw.

How come is VLog 12?
I read many times here that DR is pretty much the same as in other profiles, with maybe half a stop difference...

Since AF100 is similair to GH2, it should have about 8 stops which makes it about 2 stops behind GH4.

Thanks, I somehow missed that thread.
Indeed, Barry mentions almost 12 stops. Just how useful they are is another matter altoghether.

Heh. I think ALMOST 12 means 11.3, with the bottom 2 being so noisey they shouldn't count anyway. :D

I found this comparison test a while back on Cinema5D.

They 'tested' the GH4 at 10.9 stops; which sounds reasonable. (maybe a tad high)

I've shot with the AF100 in the past and was sometimes a little frustrated with the lack of DR, especially in the highlights. But I can't recall reading much about it's actual dynamic range numbers back then.

I now own a GH4, but haven't done a lot shooting with it yet. So I'm wondering how much of a step up is it over the ol' AF100, in terms of DR.

Thought maybe some peeps on this forum have experience with both cameras and what your thoughts are, going from one to the other.

I don't care about charts, I care about real world application in the field. I've used both the gh4, and 5d3, I'm here to say the gh4 has better "REAL WORLD DYNAMIC RANGE" Than the Canon 5d3. I'm not speaking on raw magic lantern firmware, in that case the Canon wins. But compressed codecs. Gh4 wins in most situations. Not to mention, it's ridiculously more sharp, with tons more detail. The Sony a7s is impressive, it has better D.R. than a big chunk of the higher end cameras.

The Af100 can produce stunning images in the right hands, protect the highlights, and light accordingly. It was a cutting edge camera, and in a lot of ways it still is.

I'm sorta of the same mindset, Maranfilms. I'm not really looking for exact DR numbers per se. I mostly want to know what to expect from the GH4, using the AF100 as the base comparison.

I certainly miss the AF's form-factor. Rigging up the Gh4 was a pain in the @$$! I bought it as an inexpensive interim camera to start playing with the 4K workflow.

Still waiting for an AF100 'follow-up' from Panasonic... (I know, I know. It's a fool's errand!)

I'll add one good reflector or basic light can create more capturable DR in a scene, and we should all start there rather than praying for ALEXA DR from a $1400 camera :D

I stopped waiting, and have not looked back. Panasonic shortchanged AF100 customers on basic lens compatibility testing and then tried to milk another $300 out of us for a cheesy faux-10-bit firmware update. Brand loyalty means nothing these days.

Here is the true successor to the AF100:
