GH4 GH4 V-log?

OK, here's a mini-conspiracy thought - I wonder if those GH4 V-log cameras in the hands of the early testers are really GH5's

I would expect to see many improvements with the GH5 or GH4 Mk2. V-Log is not enough to release a new model.

Loving this v-log (though there is definitely still a bias toward the cool colours and away from the warms). Also unsure how much the improvement in grade-ability is due to the 10-bit 422 files.
BTW I got a reply on Twitter from @PanasonicUSA today after requesting info on V-Log. Their tweet: "We are working on it. Should have an update on it shortly, thanks."

That's a real nice color balance! I would like to see that with just a smidgen more sharpening though.

That's what I am saying ... well, I think that's sort of what I am saying ... it's not the GH5 but something in between GH5 and GH4 ... maybe ... possibly ...

:) they're not. i've held one in my hands. just a good old run of the mill GH4.
But, Zak, let's say they changed a few ASIC or an FPGA chips inside. How would anyone know? The same body, the same sensor. Unless you take the whole case apart, no one would spot a darn thing.

Chances are, of course, you're correct. It's just that the whole V-Log thing seems odd.

Thanks John. I'd guess that the softness you're seeing is from the 1080 export and compression, as I added quite a bit of sharpening (using Crumblepop Finisher for FCPX, which if used in careful moderation is a magic sauce with GH4 footage - I'd definitely give it a go any GH4/FCPX users). Here's a UHD export - see if that works any better (can anyone tell me how to post so you guys can download the original JPEGS?).

We shoot Cinelike D regularly & never have footage anywhere near as bad looking as your test. On several occasions we've cut it with Alexa/Amira footage & used it in nationally broadcast commercials for high-end clients.

While setting contrast to -5 isn't usually the best choice a much bigger issue is you have pushed the Pedestal to +15. Also looks like your White Balance may not be optimal.

I have a GH4 arriving Tuesday, would be a nice surprise if it just happen to have V-LogL on it. I know, wishful thinking but imagine if there were a few hidden gems in the stacks of inventory. Like updated firmware preinstalled and timed to ship with an announcement from Panasonic. Yeah, whatever....I'll wake up shortly, just let me dream for a few more days.

I think you're drooling while in this dream..... :-D

Last summer, when I first got my GH4, I dialed Cine-D down to extremely flat levels. Since then, I've let off and usually keep Cine-D at stock levels. Last night I re-graded some of the raw files shot with the extremely flat Cine-D levels, and I don't think they look bad at all. I'd really like a second opinion on these...

They were all shot with-

Contrast: -2
Sharpness: -5
NR: -5
Saturation: -5
Hue: 0
i.Dynamic: Off
i.Resolution: Standard
Master Pedestal Level: +15
Lum. Level: 0-255
No Highlight Shadow curve.

There's a point at which "flat" doesn't equal "most gradeable footage" - it just means flat, lacking color and luminance and contrast. Like a bad photo. People often push Cine-D further than they should; using -5 on all the settings doesn't look that great; the grading often looks... processed, not organic. Which isn't surprising, because you aren't starting your edit with flat LOG footage (ie, VLog, or BMD Raw) - you've just got bad, dim, murky footage.

Bern,
That test purposely pushed every setting as "flat" as possible in order to demonstrate what a bad idea it is to do so. It's an exaggerated worst-case scenario.

Regardless, even with neutral "0" settings, the color reproduction of Cine-D is objectively less accurate than the "natural" profile. (You can test this with any calibrated color chart.)

I haven't seen any charts shot with V-LOG yet, but based on these samples it looks like color reproduction is greatly improved over the CINE profiles.

Daniel,
Those shots look pretty good. You definitely benefit from good exposure. The less you have to push the image, the less likely you are to reveal problems. Even so, you can see the beginnings of the most telltale problem in the skin tones: As the brightness changes, the hue of the color changes as well.

It's not impossible to get good footage out of Cine-D dialed all the way done...it's just easier to get it out of Natural with more reasonable settings.

So still quiet on the V-log front, huh? Seems so weird that there would be so much talk about and beta testers using it to not have something tangible buy now.

I've given up waiting. My guess is the marketing department has put a stop to V-Log getting on the GH4.

I'm not sure... Driftwood would of had to of got permission to release those clips so far - so if that is the case - Panasonic must be getting to the point where they are happy with the V-LOG-L.

If they aren't happy and won't be releasing it I can't seem them allowing V-LOG-L clips out in the wild.

?

But I agree, what is the hold up!? can only think its tied to the DVX200 release
