GH4 GH4 V-log?

I would hope another $50 to $100, but I doubt it will go down too much. Might see used GH3 go down to closer to $400 though, that would be around $200 lower than the current normal used price. Not sure I would want to upgrade though since there isn't a higher bit rate hack. Yes I know a lot of other things have been fixed or improved, but having a decently high bit rate and small GOP will certainly help the recordings.

From what I remember I paid exactly the same amount for my GH4 as I did my GH1 when it came out.
Don't know the GH1/2 but both 3 (fall of 2012) and 4 (spring 2014) came out at $1,700 and both were deemed major advancements at the time (GH3 with its 72 Mbps 1080p All-I and GH4 with 4K) of their release.

Now, if that ~ 18-20 month cycle holds ...

My GH2 was just under $1k with kit lens (around beginning of December). And this was during Panasonic's lack of product after initial launch (September?).

Honestly, if V-Log comes I'll be happy to get it, but I'm not dying for it nor would I pay to get it. I've been happy with Cine-D and nobody is complaining about what I've produced.

Based on the amount of change needed, maybe thinking that the files start to break down in 8 bit 4:2:0? That would be my thinking too, but I don't have enough experience with these files to know for certain.

Oh, I agree: "More is MORE", but what I mean is perfectly useable footage has come out of the previous logs in the past. And Cinestyle kept me from throwing my T3i repeatedly into a brick wall.

i'm just sayin i'm a little skeptical about perfectly useable (or at least gradeable)8 bit log footage, but i admittedly don't have any experience with it.

Don't mean to be mean, but being skeptical about something you have no experience with is where FUD begins. Let's wait and see what we can pull out of footage when the profile actually hits a wider audience. I am actually quite hopeful (but admit I have had no experience with it yet ).

just sayin there's a lot of more experienced people than i am that have some valid points in questioning the gradeability of 8 bit log footage. eh whatever, hopefully when the update comes it will prove them and me wrong.

Where log comes into play is with an external recorder able to do 10bit
+1

4.2.0 8-bit log type footage is a can of worms. Robbing the middle of color bit depth to add crap on the top and bottom provided nothing to the quality of an image. There was no better way to ruin Canon APS-C footage than to shoot with cinestyle. Sony slog on the A7s or FS7 is nearly as bad. Add a recorder that captures in 4.2.2 10-bit and it can be a different story.

My personal belief is that v-log for the GH4 will create nothing but mush in the midrange, unless they can get true 4.2.2 10-bit from a shogun or such recorder. 100mbps 4K 4.2.0 8-bit has no chance of using v-log successfully.

Cheers,
Pete

yeah that's about consistent with what i've been hearing about log gamma and 8 bit video. perhaps it's taking panasonic so long to release vlog because they are trying to somehow make it good enough in 8 bit so that they won't get a bunch of complaints from users who don't know the difference between 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 who recorded vlog internally?

edit: HOT DAMN!
