Firmware V2.4 is up: http://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/index2.html

Changelog: Improved V-Log L setting issue of firmware Ver 2.3

... and this is why, Panasonic have annoyed me even more, and shows them not in the same mindset as Samsung et al, and the general 'firmware revolution' that is taking place in cameras and devices these days.

Before today I thought, okay firmware updates take time, they need to be evaluated and tested and the process for inclusion of improvements and fixes is a timely process.

No, it took less than 2 days for Panasonic to release a new firmware to fix a gapping hole that looses them money - yet usability issues, which have plagued us since the GH2? (didn't have a GH1) are still there, functionality that users have asked for, posted across multiple message boards over months and years - are yet to be incorporated.

We aren't asking for RAW, for 60fps - we are asking for crop marks, we are asking for autoISO etc - general usability issues.

This today, shows me that Panasonic aren't listening.

Redo int vs prores.jpg

One thing I noticed is the 10bit ProRes HQ is a little darker than the internal recording. Highlights peaking at 80 IRE here.

White balance 5500K. Light used was a Aputure Light Storm LS 1S rated at 5500K

The shadows are much cleaner on both.

Skin around 55 IRE seems safe but I didnt fully test that.

Looks like things clean up when you go over a couple stops.

I also put the highlights at 60 and wow was the shadows a noisy mess.

huh. my 8-bit darks have more greenish than magenta to my eyes. does this depend on the WB used? mine lean to blue-ish over the "DSLR Orange" tints

If they would have took even more time, they would have caught the gaping hole before it was released! Trust me, I write code for a living, and even the most benign change can possibly wreak havoc on your code. The stuff can be so complex, the only way to catch these things is having an exhaustive test plan. Some interactions are obvious, but some are so subtle that they can surely slip by. This is exacerbated by having separate teams in different locations (sometimes even different continents!), so cut them some slack when they just don't throw on your little enhancements you request.

I just did the same damn thing on the last release of software at my day job. Simple ass change, (just five lines of code) and I broke something that audit didn't catch. The fix was also just a few lines of code, but nevertheless, the current release has a medium severity bug because of JUST FIVE LINES OF CODE.

What is the luminance set to? I think I remember I had this problem with my Ninja2 and it was something to do with the 0-255 vs 16-235

What makes you think they sat down 2 days ago and started working on this latest firmware update? No software is developed like that and this is the firmware that has been in the works for a long time. The one people have been using for free was likely a very old version that was used by the beta testers and a bit buggy. This firmware was the one that was likely going to come out soon anyway.

Besides it is much easier to take software that is 98% done and make a few tweaks to push a new build to fill in that other 2%. I do it all the time developing mobile apps. I spend months working on an app and push it live. A few people notice some bugs and within days I push a new build with those bugs fixed. Now obviously I didn't write a whole new app in two days to fix the bugs. I used the existing version to fix the bugs and could quickly launch a new build. Firmware is the same way.

Panasonic has without a doubt evolved since the GH1. Each camera gets massively better then the previous. The GH1 started the hybrid camera concept. The GH2 added 24p and made the video a solid option without any weird issues. The GH3 eliminated the need for hacking the camera by offering higher bit rate recording formats. It was also the first GH camera with decent audio controls and for the first time a camera that could be truly considered a video camera replacement. The GH4 added 4k and an industry unheard of level of quality that still holds its own. Along the way Panasonic has added a lot of great features that a majority of the people have asked for. I can't tell you why some requests have been ignored but keep in mind Panasonic doesn't take requests from forums. If you want to make a request you need to find amore direct way to do so. Besides the Panasonic is considered one of the most user friendly DSLR cameras for shooting video. Usability is something they absolutely excel at. If it isn't your cup of tea thats your problem but you can't exactly say Panasonic ignores usability issues. Thats the one area where they crush the competition.

for fun, last night I racheted up my MASTER PED to +15, SHADOW +5, HIGHLIGHTS -5, 0-255, Natural CONTRAST -5, SATURATION -5 and did some filming internally, compared to V-Log. Then checked white balance and corrected according to RGB Parade... colors LOOKED truer in VLOG a little bit, but the dark noise was not usable to me. And Natural the blacks were proper coloring, even lifted - not magen/greenish. Natural won out to me. MAYBE there was another .5 stop seen in really dark stuff, but it was filled with colors and junk, and no one would care about the .08% of that part of the screen that was that dark showing unimportant detail.

Noise tween that NATURAL setup and VLOG seemed equal, but cleaner in NATURAL.

I used the panny varicam lut - which works great correcting vlog - but I can nearly match it with manual grading.

Man, I can't stand touching the highlight/shadow curves though. They just really distort skin tones and look ugly. A lot of work to fix.

It is better in most regards, but it does highlight the weakness of a highly compressed 8-bit signal.

You do know that the camera sensor and stuff are all processed on 422 10 bits internally before going to the 8bits encoder, right ?

They better make GH5 record 4:2:2 10bit internally, or tweaked the codec for log use.

Did you see the DVX 200 ? It will share the same codecs I'm afraid.

Try exposing higher. I think I'm hitting a sweet spot with 18% gray around 55 to 60 IRE. Image cleans up. It's hard to do without a waveform I get it and the histogram is practically useless with log. I know that seems high and in high contrast scenes the highlights will go above 90 IRE.

Eric, I don't have an external monitor with histos etc... what should I set the Zebra to, to correctly expose gh4 vlog internal recording? and does the gh4 internal histogram stop around 80% on the lcd?
I dont know how IRE translates over to the GH4 onscreen info.

Well, use the zebras. ;)
Set one at 55-60 and the other one at 80.
