GH4 GH4 V-Log FREE !!

That hole in mobile app can actually do more good then harm to Panasonic. People will try it out, get used to it and when app or firmware will be updated or will get tired of it's limitations (zebra etc.) will eventually buy GH5 ,,.
A small correction.

A small correction.

I'm sure you're right for many, but man, after seeing V-LOG struggle in 8-bit, I can't imagine purchasing another camera body for a LOG mode. Priority for me is an external recorder before anything else.

I also can't imagine V-LOG L being a huge selling point for the DVX200 at this point either. Don't get me wrong, the feature's cool, but when you're having to buy a recorder to really make it worth your while... well, the DVX200 starts looking way overpriced. GH4 right now is right where I need it, just need another capture solution to dodge the compression. Then I'm good for another two years or more.

I did some tests through entire ISO range and I got the same results as DustyLense. Magenta blocking in the blacks. I will try the 7Q+ tonight but I have to say right now I'm disappointed. I feel just shooting with Natural profile is better. The GH4 just is to noisy for V-Log L internal and if I have to shoot 10bit out to 7Q+ to use it I think I have better options with a different camera.

Panasonic should have bundled 10bit 422 with V-LOG L. I'm not kidding either.

Keep us updated Erik! As he said his results were far far superior when using an external 10bit recorder.. I agree that footage is noisey and has macroblocking when shooting in non-ideal lighting. At least with 8 bit. Looked a lot better out in sunlight with NR untouched though. Still, not impressive. However, I have an Atomos Ninja Assassin arriving tomorrow morning by 10am so I will definitely conduct some more conclusive tests.. My gut tells me, 10bit win- 8bit disaster.

You have a smart gut! :-D

I have a outdoors shoot tomorrow. Basically a commercial with talent doing lines to camera and it would be a great opportunity to use the 7Q+ with the GH4 in 10bit mode but I have to do a test tonight just to make sure. Living on the edge! :-D

New to V-log...

Is V-log just for using LUTS?
Yes, unless you enjoy starting from scratch with a dingy gray image.

Is V-log flatter than using pedestal/curves/cine-d ect?
Not really, but it's more precisely calibrated.

Is 8-bit enough for v-log?
Not quite, but if you expose carefully, no one will notice.

V-log can't increase DR right?
It increases dynamic range at the expense of tonal range. YMMV

I'm just not seeing the "extra stops" internally - any more than I can get by tweaking and pushing blacks into noiseyland -- just like VLOG. If Panny had said "Designed for external recorders", I would not have flushed away $100

Me neither, and I'll even add that when using Natural or low contrast CineV, those blacks will be cleaner and not full of color noise when you raise them like they are with v-log. Color accuracy is nice though. Would be great if they could apply the same color science to an unflattened profile.

.

They better make GH5 record 4:2:2 10bit internally, or tweaked the codec for log use.

Don't hold your breath.

IMO, after these 8-bit reviews, GH5 will have to have a 10-bit internal recording along with a higher bit rate (and, conceivably, HEVC). The playing field is getting too crowded not to pack a lot of features into a $1,700 MFT model.

Just looking at some of the new URSA Mini 4K ProRes HQ footage and that's some pretty awesome looking stuff for $3,000 (old URSA sensor). Sony's got several 4K $3,000'ish models too. If the target announcement is 2016 NAB, then GH5 should aim for a new sensor, more DR, V-Log, 10-bit internal, etc. The GH line has usually been far ahead of the curve and, for it to be a success, GH5 will have to maintain this tradition.

Lucky! I'm really considering buying the Assassin as the V-Log is very promising but just not stable with 8bits. Please show us a comparison ;)

I'm wondering if this Image App debacle wasn't an intentional "inside job". Somebody tweeted me about the thing, stated public doubt about purchasing the update, included Lumix USA's twitter handle on the reply, and Lumix USA's account... FAVORITED it??

https://twitter.com/Jasonrae3/status/643920884831358976

I mean I recall reading that there was internal strife about this. Dunno. Maybe they just meant to favorite my response to the tweet.

When I tweeted them today I wasnt sure what the response would be but after that I was pretty sure I was keeping the Free Version unless they add another feature :) Not sure what to make of these guys....lol

Yep I saw the magenta blocking too...I did a ton of tests last night under video lighting and also compared it to other profiles.
I did not see a ton of noise tho, but I overexposed a little, the noise was not a problem to me.
I also noticed that exactly the same magenta blocks in the pother profiles, but they are harder to see because they are smeared more.
That said...to me the V-Log looked miles better than the other profiles in terms of depth and dimension in the image...so if 10 bit fixes the magenta shift then I am sold,
I really like the look of it..
Included a couple of screen grams Natural and V-Log with the basic Varicam LUT applied, you can see the massive difference in the falloff on the guitars neck and also the overall dimension.
Same exact lighting and setup for both shots
