GH4 GH4 V-Log FREE !!

Panasonic's exposure manual for V-Log - http://pro-av.panasonic.net/en/varicam/35/dl.html

Some additional notes from reddit:

"After saving V-LOG L to a custom profile, it works like it should. However, the camera's histogram doesn't adapt to it, meaning that it will max out somewhere between 70% and 80% brightness - the image clips right there, even if there's still room to the right of the histogram. This is apparently due to the fact that V-LOG L is based on V-LOG for the varicam, but doesn't have as much room in the highlights etc (Google it if you're interested). So in order to be safe here, you may want to assign one of your zebras to 80% and use that for shooting in V-LOG L, because it will indicate clipping somewhat reliably. Also note that black will not sit all the way to the left in the histogram, but a bit above that. TL;DR: The GH4's histogram doesn't know it's showing you a log image, and will therefore betray you if you're not careful."

yeah , Im so confused on why i dont have the option. Ive followed directions to the T on every single tutorial there is.

Alright, here it is step by step, sorry if you know all this, but just covering it all:

Downloaded the 2.30 Firmware Update (probably .zip or maybe .exe) GH4__V23.zip?
Extracted GH4__V23.bin file?
Put GH4__V23.bin file on the root directory an SD card that was just formatted in camera (formatted in camera isn't usually necessary, but a good step just to make sure it's the right file system)?
With card in, turn camera on and push playback?
Saw the message: Version up ->2.30 and selected yes?
Saw the bar progressing until camera restarted?
Check in the settings menu (represented by a wrench in the main menus) Version Disp. says: Body Firmware [Ver.2.3]

If all that checks out, then:
Panasonic Image App Downloaded. Are you using an apple or Android device? Don't know if it matters, but I'm using apple. It is possible that an Android update could have been rolled out faster.
Connected direct via wifi (connect your device to the GH4-##### Wi-fi).
Open up the imaging app and connect via QR code.
Go to Remote operation in the app.
Hit the QMenu button in the bottom right corner.
Select Photo Style. Then V-Log L should be the last listed.

Yeah, just did another shoot with V-LOG L (I'm busy today!). Use the Portrait profile to set your exposure/WB, then switch over to V-LOG L. Getting great results with this method.

I'm wondering if this Image App debacle wasn't an intentional "inside job". Somebody tweeted me about the thing, stated public doubt about purchasing the update, included Lumix USA's twitter handle on the reply, and Lumix USA's account... FAVORITED it??

I mean I recall reading that there was internal strife about this. Dunno. Maybe they just meant to favorite my response to the tweet.

Okay, so I've noticed in one shot against a poorly lit cream colored brick wall (under gross fluorescent light to boot), there's some 8-bit suffering that the sensitive eye could see. However, as I use FilmConvert for most of my stuff, the film grain covers it right up. Honestly, I'm LOVING this picture profile in conjunction with the Varicam709 LUT and FilmConvert with its default profile on top of that. Scrubbing through my footage it has this amazing film-like quality to it. Not necessarily high dynamic range (we are only talking 12 stops), but man, these are the best skin tones I've EVER seen out of this thing.

Now that V-Log is fully in the wild, what is the best scenario to use this profile? Should I use it in high dynamic range outdoor shots , but do something else on high dynamic range lower light indoor takes?

OK, be sure the camera is in Video mode on the main dial first, with all the other settings you will use the V-log with.

After wi-fi connection, on my 10" Android Asus pad, the home screen comes up first: select "remote operation" and a new screen appears with a Q-menu button in the lower right corner. Select that and on the next screen, hit Photo Style, which has the current "style" under it, then on the next screen scroll through the style list to V-log L - it higlights, leave it there...

The next step is to save your settings for your new setup to one of the Custom settings on the main dial. We know C-1 works so far...

for some reason i cant seem to download the firmware. it says During server maintenance

I guess they realized and took down the download option. Am i missing something?

The direct method is not coming back very soon I bet, but this poses an issue for people that paid for it but didnt update the firmware yet. How will they get the firmware to use what they paid for. They can use third party sites to get it but if you don't want to go that way then Panasonic now has to supply the firmware direct to those customers some how. What a mess!

They will just release 2.3.1 firmware with that "bug" fixed (locking wi-fi choice if you're v-log is not activated). That's all! This will come very quickly, I'm sure.
