GH4 GH4 V-Log FREE !!

This whole thing reminds me of the SONY F5 internal 4K fiasco. The guy just added a few lines on txt file in the SD card and enabled 4K on the F5 which Sony charged an "appropriate" amount for an upgrade. This VLOG though, is ..uh.. a much easy give away.

It should've been free from day one. Why? Look at all the time and resources Panasonic wasted trying to make it a paid upgrade only to screw it up. Should've saved everyone the headache, including themselves, and just released it to help sustain GH4 sales while focusing on GH5 development. Any money they spent developing the profile itself will be recouped through Varicam and DVX200 sales, I'm sure.

The whole V-log release went from an exciting prospect to a long-delayed boneheaded eventuality, and they have only themselves to blame.

Hmmm, interesting find. I doubt anyone lost their job, I think the camera activation system is essentially broken because it was never designed to do this in the first place. Best way to handle it is to just allow it to work, and put some nice new features into the GH4R that will make you want to buy it.

Still too bad we can't hack the firmware like the GH2.

I see some of you guys turning your NR to -5. Why? Zero is Zero. That is why you are seeing noisy images.

You are SO wrong on this, dusty! Zero is not zero. You gain more detail at -5.

Download GH4_NR_summary.mp4

Look at the pink sponge.

Yep! Don't mess with reducing NR. Just try the profile as is.

Or am I wrong? Does NR behave differently in V-Log mode?

You're not seeing a detail gain. You're seeing noise that looks like sharpness. I could be wrong, but Vlog with NR -5 looks like ****!

I did this because I'm impatient but there's no way I'm canceling my pre-order. This feature was advertised after the GH4 was already on the market for six months, I anticipated there would be a cost and am happy to have supported it. I don't agree with the method in which they strung us along for a year, BUT in my opinion everyone who's turning the thing on right now needs to abide by the honor system and either remove the profile or go to Panasonic's site and pre-order the activation code. (Waits for the tomatoes to be thrown...)

With NR at 0 I'm seeing some weird color artifacts at times. Seems like it's a trade off, but overexposing a tad seems to make the noise less ugly. But the more I play with it, I'm not sure V-Log is useful without an external recorder.

I agree. This mode is for external recording. I see color artifacts no matter what the settings are internally.

Using NR at 0 and a noise reduction software in post (NeatVideo in my case), i'm finding much easier to get good (great) results in VLog than in any other profile, probably because there are more uniform areas and the noise isn't so contrasted.
The noise is about the same level in 400 or in 1250 ISO as far as i tested for now.
Panasonic should invest in a new firmware update of the noise reduction engine in camera even if they had to license and pay $99 to NeatVideo for every V-Log license sold.

ps: I'll still buy the license when it's available in my country.

"Greed won today"

Yea, as in "ooh that's a nice feature" lock it for now and we can sell it as Downloadable Content, just like the video game industry.
I can't wait to buy DLC for my hardware: Enable Manual Controls: $99, Enable video recording: $99, Adjustable white balance: $99, HDMI video output: $99.

Sorry, but that's where I see this going.

So i download the Dropbox file posted back a bit, put it on my sd card in root , then put into camera with fully charged battery.
Press play buttton and nothing happens...

I'm right with you on this one!

In-camera video noise reduction is a trade-off between preserving original image details versus introducing spurious digitization artifacts. The sensor sub-sampling process will inherently reduce the contrast of fine details while adding aliasing artifacts. Both types of detail are best preserved by setting NR to minimum, as long as the H.264 encoder has enough bitrate. With highly detailed images, if the encoder runs out of bits, it may introduce additional macroblock compression artifacts. This can be avoided by raising the NR setting just enough to smooth out the sharp edges of the aliasing artifacts, without blunting the edges of genuine details. You can often judge the optimal amount of NR by boosting the gamma of shadow footage and examining the noise granularity. If the shadow detail looks blocky or ragged, you probably have either too much NR or not enough bitrate. Ideally, you want to preserve as much fine-grained, undersaturated shadow detail as you can, and use noise management tools to maximize its image quality in post.

You also have to look at the processing power required to use Neat Video. NR in camera has to happen in realtime and still leave enough processing power left over for everything else the camera needs to do. In camera NR will always be a bit crude because a camera doesn't have a 16 core Xeon built into it or an Nvidia CUDA card built in. NR is a very complex process and NR software on a powerful edit machine can't even process in real time yet.
