GH4 GH4 favorite shooting settings?

Hi

Nope. I'm averaging 80Mbps in 4K UHD mode too. The same for 1080p 200Mbps mode. I have subjects in shallow focus with a slow shutter and a very flat picture profile though. Perhaps a more focused, detailed, colorful shot would really stress the codec's bitrate?

100Mbps is the maximum bit-rate we would see from/to the media card and not the average video bit-rate, so 100Mbps is the exception not the norm. 80Mbps sounds about right as an average, and of course it depends on the scene and how good the encoder is at finding redundancy. Note it is possible to see bit-rates in access of the maximum, sometimes considerably so as some software reporting bit-rate will report on the maximum data-rates seen from the video buffer, rather than the media. The video buffer being a small amount of memory in the decoder that can buffer data read from the card at normal speed and store it to provide a much higher peak than is otherwise possible for a complex scene.

I've checked an All-Intra 200Mbits/sec 1080P file from the GH4 and that shows a bit-rate of 195Mbps with a maximum of 211Mbps. Note I'm using MediaInfo, other software can vary what they report. All-Intra will be at the top bit-rate for the majority of footage as each frame is encoded separately.

Here is the Gh4 up against the AX100 and BMC4K.

All three cameras have their strengths and weakness. The Gh4 is fun to work with though. Lots of controls at your fingertips when you set up the custom functions.

All of them look good, the AX100 really pops, wow! My interest in the GH4 is for 4k downscaled - looks like it holds up well in your comparison.

It seems Andrew was referring to the 1080 readout from the GH4, not the 4K mode, which he mentioned later is a fair amount slower. Now I'm wondering if the cameras might be similar in 4K re rolling shutter.

But doesn't the GH3, GH2, and GH1 also readout the entire sensor and then bin the results to get a 1080 image? Why would recording 4k video affect the speed of the readout? I thought the only difference between all other GH cameras and the GH4 was that the GH4 could dump the sensor readout into the processor and record 4k instead of having to bin down to 1080 so the older processor could handle the readout.

I understand binning cuts a lot of corners but as far as I know all 16mp are still readout from the sensor even on the older cameras. This is why the HD can look so clean because the pixels are combined to improve signal to noise ratio.

For sure, the 4k modes on the GH4 read the sensor slower with this build. It's notice able right away. I'm just wondering at this point, what are we dealing with? Is this similar to the 5d2 readout? (sold my 5d2 one month ago so cannot test here) Definitely in that regard, one giant step backwards...

My methodology was to take the total file size of the recorded video clip (let's say 178MB) and convert it into bits (178MB x 8 = 1424Mb) and then divide it by the total seconds of the clip (in this case it was 15s) which gives 95Mbps or 11.9 MBps. And this was a very complex shot involving a pan, tilt, and rack focus.

I understand that it's a variable bitrate, I just don't understand why it's not using the full range of available bitrates.

I just got my GH4 few days ago and it's my first time using a GH camera. I can't seem to find Cinema 4K mode. It's not listed in the record setup page. I see 4k is listed and works fine. Just wondering what I'm doing wrong. I tried mov, mp4, mp4 (LPCM) and I can't seem to get it to show up. So what am I doing wrong? I've got a the Transcend 128 GB class 3 card.
