GH4 GH4 Are You Jumping Ship?

I'm waiting the new Gh4 firmware before jumping but i'm very interested in the Nx1.
Better IQ, better colour (IMO), better AF, APS-C sensor, Log profiles ... And i really prefer shallow depth of field, no need to use speedbooster with the NX.

Jumping ship is not cost free - besides the obvious cost of the camera body, the biggest money cost is in lenses and support gear that might be designed specifically for a given camera (like f.ex. a cage etc.). Then there is the time cost of having to learn a new camera to its full potential while losing the expertise in workflow you've achieved with your older system. Given all that, I think jumping ship is only worth it if it is a game changing upgrade, not simply an incremental improvement, or just improvement in one area (like low light in the A7S compared to the GH4).

For me, personally, I would not jump to the NX1. I just don't see a huge qualitative jump. It doesn't even address the GH4's biggest weakness - low light performance and bad noise at higher ISO... the NX1 is barely better, if at all in low light. Where is the NX1 standing head and shoulders above the GH4? I personally don't see it. If I have to squint just at the right angle to see some tiny maybe possible perhaps just might be an improvement in that one pixel over there, I don't see a reason to incur the substantial penalty of lens loss with the NX1, having to get a whole new raft of adapters and lose all my native m4/3 lenses, and btw., worst, never be able to use a speedbooster (technically impossible for the NX1 - ever). And all this for what? When I first read about all the new tech Samsung is putting in this cam, I had high hopes, but the results have been disappointing to say the least... a lot of hype and no better than the GH4 - where is all that new tech paying off? I don't see any payoff.

So, if I am to jump ship, I'll need something real big - a HUGE jump over the GH4. The only competitor that even comes close in this class is the Sony A7S on account of that amazing low light performance - but the A7S 4K is not there compared to the GH4, the jello is worse and in the end, it would be a wash.

Give me a GH4 with 15 stops DR, 2-3 more stops in clean low light, and better highlight rolloff handling, better LCD, IBIS, two-slot recording, clean no-latency HDMI, and I'll jump ship - oh, and btw., keep it the same price as the GH4 - don't tell me it'll cost $10K either.

I look around, and I don't see any such DSLR. Until then, I stick with the Panasonic system and I'll wait to see what the GH5 brings, for a nice calm upgrade the usual way GH1-->GH2-->GH3-->GH4-->GH5, keeping all my lenses and everything else... and btw. if the GH5 doesn't deliver something worth paying $1500 for, I'll skip even that upgrade.

As for NX1 - if you have no, or minimal investment in the Panny GH system, then maybe the NX1 is worth getting on that ship for - but jumping ship from the GH4 for the NX1 steamboat? Sorry, I personally don't see it. YMMV.

No VLOG is a real bummer. I have been hoping to see a more flexible image since October/November when the Shogun was scheduled to release. That combined with the continued absence of manual movie 4:3 4K (which would be a huge boon for anamorphic shooters) and we are still sitting with some of the primary complaints that have been thrown up time and again in the endless A7S vs GH4 and now vs NX1 debate threads.

I got to test out the NX1 and it is a really nice camera. I think Samsung did a great job. Plus they just released new firmware (which this camera didn't have). It is very comparable to the GH4. But I can say completely honestly that I wouldn't trade my GH4 and its lenses for an NX1 and a full set of comparable lenses straight up if you offered it to me right now.

While I like the idea of recording H.265, this kills the NX1 as a viable option for me...

Video Clip Length: Up to 29 Minute 59 Seconds

No self-respecting camera (sold in the USA) would ever artificially limit the recording time of a clip. As long as there's power and space on the recording medium, I expect the camera to continue recording until I hit Stop. Any other design is, to my mind, broken and unusable.
