GH4 GH4 Are You Jumping Ship?

Am I totally missing something on the GH4, do people think that the GH5 feature set wont be good enough to invest in micro 4/3s?

Ok so here is where I am at, I came from shooting with the c100 because I love using 4k. The repositioning in post is great for a one man shooting situation, and the ability to control the camera with my phone. Since then I have now invested almost 3k in lenses and really love using the camera. I also never worry about things not being in focus :)

Now I see the NX1 and NAB coming up in am in a few forums and a ton of people are jumping from the GH4 to the NX1 :)

I am guessing Panasonic is going to respond in a big way with the gh5 ( the gh4 is already amazing!!!! ) with some jaw dropping features.

Just wondering if my experience with the GH cameras I am missing something or not, so I thought I would ask the experts.

Better collect the best cameras from all brands: C100, GH4, NX1, A7S

Why not simply collect the best from all brands:
  • C100 - brings projects and Canon "skin tones" whatever it means
  • GH4 - most inexpensive 4K
  • NX1 - 1080/120fpd
  • A7S - low light full frame
No more frustration, you can join 4 fun-clubs, everybody will love you. Buy only one native zoom lens for each and couple of Nikon/MD/FD/OM prime lenses which can be used on all.

ive been in this business since the 1990s and one thing you can be sure of is everyone will always curse the current model and salivate for the next.
sometimes that works out. sometimes it doesnt.

we're to a point where its all about budget, personal preference, and specific need. there are existing $500 cameras that look defendably (in most cases) as good as a $10,000+ camera.

i dont care for the look of what ive seen from the a7s or nx1. and the gh4 seems to handle moving objects better than both (be that passing cars or frame jello)
most shoot 4k and there isnt much more than a stop or two DR between the bunch.

it comes down to an issue of what pleases your eye and your personal workflow.

personally, the only thing i care about from any future DSLR at this point would be global shutter and better audio inputs.

There are plenty of people who will always jump to the next newest incremental update. There are also plenty of people who are deeply in debt. In many cases, these are one in the same.

If you prefer not to be in debt, you either have to have enough good-paying work to support system-jumping or enough sense to stick with a system that does what you need it to do well enough, even past its period of darling-hood.

Agreed. I'm still heavily using my GH2 for paid work. If it works for you, no reason to jump ship.

I'm extremely happy with my GH4 and will stick with it for a long while. It is dang near an Alexa, and that is good enough for me. I work for fun, not pay, and I know there is ALWAYS better/faster coming out tomorrow. But, I grew up learning "Contentment" not "consumerism" so I've learned to be happy with my choices. This GH4 thing feels like it's a decade ahead of my Canon.

Duse....SPEEDBOOSTER.

Made a HUGE difference on my GH2.

As for the GH4 -The better feature set and ease of workflow are still top-shelf.

Same here. It produces a great image.

Having carefully hoarded the shekels towards the purchase of the GH4, the Samsung NX1 suddenly pops up on the horizon.

After spending much time agonizing over the pros and cons of the Gh4 versus the NX1, I have decided to move forward slowly to purchase the NX1 (slowly, as I heard there may be a price drop on the NX1 in January because of slow pre-orders).

Does this mean I am jumping ship? Not in the least. I still have my beloved Gh2 slaving away on all my assignments without complaint. I will keep it, along with the several Panasonic lenses, adapters and speedbooster.

While it made sense to get the Gh4 (great camera) because my m43 environment is already established, I am very much attracted to the NX1's offerings: more advanced tech, nicer color and picture (from most reviews), more megapixels etc.

The NX1 is very exciting for me, in the same way the Gh2 was when it first came out.

Great input everyone :) I love hearing back and getting peopels thoughts on this. I am not getting rid of my gh4 at all just wondering if I was missing something on the cycle of the gh cameras. I have invested into the micro 4/3s so I will gladly wait until the gh5 comes out and see what happens. I don't really do paid gigs with my cameras but I own a company and we shoot every other day with these guys .... so I guess I do get paid :) Just seems like the gh4 is the fastest turn around camera I have shot with. Super simply to use.

GH4 and A7s seems good to pair, but if nx1 drops the price, hmmm otherwise GH4 still unbeatable, so many good films now being shot with GH4.

The best next camera will be the next best camera.... or the other way round ..... ;-)

Made the decision to the MFT mount more than to the camera. Small and extremely adaptable, a lot of brands with lots of lenses, plus adaptors & all the nice vintage stuff. And my bank-account agrees.

The only videos I've seen that made me want to upgrade were all A7s related and most of those have been with the Atomos Shogun. Having said that, it looks like it's a tricky camera to monitor, expose and grade. I've seen a bunch of funky color on both A7s and NX1 videos.

I'm in love with my GH4. Really, the only things that would make it better for me would be:

1) Global shutter
2) Better noise at higher ISO levels
3) Zero lag on the HDMI output.

Until a camera comes along that does all 3 of those things for the same price as the GH4, I'm not upgrading.

This makes sense !!!

I agree, I really love my Gh4 and whats its doing for me now in this moment for video shooting. This little camera has saved me soo much time which equals money :) I still can't believe I went from a C100 to a Gh4. This little camera sat in my bag for three months before I even tried it. lol... It was love at first shoot.

I cannot say enough good things about my gh4. I'm not someone who gets every next best thing, and I'm going to be a tough sell on whatever comes next, be it gh5 or whatever else. The gh4 really is almost everything I want in a camera. Sure tech will get better, maybe h.265 is the future, but I have a feeling I'll be happy using my gh4 for a good long while. I'm completely satisfied with it.

i think GH4 gave the same feelings as when the first DVX100 came out.It was the game changer and started the trend even as it held on for more than 3 to 4 years until the P2 cameras came out such as the HVX200 and the HPX series. There are cameras that exudes a pioneering start and that is the GH4!

Jumping ship?

Not a chance. I've got a decent set of lenses including nice primes and a couple of useful zooms. Besides a GH4 I really like, I still have a pair of GH3's and a compact GX7. I'm more than happy with the current system.
