GH2 GH3 or BMC m4/3?

BMc gh3 they are all great news for the cause of cinema or other audio visual endeavors . But the gh series will always a b cam. I have yet to see a decent film completely shot with this $900 camera. So let's all be realistic with the right perspective.

In fact I continue to shoot with my dvx100 equipped with anamorphic lens then I uprezzed it to prores and the
images are still stunning.i am finishing a project dvx mixed with my hack gh1 and you would hardly notice a difference.i am thinking shooting with digital 8 also.
my dvx100 in this case is my main cam and my gh2 my b cam.

Its not the machine it's the manitou you put in those machines.

So you claim that the GH is a B camera, at the same time you claim there's hardly a difference with the DVX100?

I sold my "professional" AF100 because I felt picture quality of my GH2 was better. But in the end it's all personal.

Like the other guy said, cameras don't make movies, people do. Back to topic, whether someone would choose a GH3 or BMC in the end is personal too. For some lack of electronic control isn't an issue, for others it is. Which camera provides with best picture quality (the most important thing in a camera) we'll only know in a few months from now.

And shooting with digital8? That's SD only, isn't it?

Oh nice.

I've been hearing that external battery options for the BMC were going to cost approx. $900-1000. If this Switronix one is the real deal, then that helps my overall camera budget (hey, every buck helps you know). I could see getting by with this one battery. Once it runs down or gets low on juice, put it on the charger and use the internal one until you get the Switronix one charged up to a decent level again.

As for the GH3 vs the BMC... I think initially I'll get the GH3 if it turns out to be close to what the rumors are suggesting. That way I can build up some of my m4/3 lens and adaptable to m4/3 manual lens collection with the GH3 and my GH2 before I jump on the BMC. Now that Black Magic is offering the more adaptable m4/3 mount, it seems best to wait on the BMC. Since it doesn't ship until December, I will be waiting pretty much until early next year anyways. Also, I don't have any specific projects or shoots coming up until maybe springtime next year that will require something as robust in terms of image and post as the BMC.

I do love the image that the BMC produces. After seeing Philip Bloom's test video with it, I'm in love with what it can do in ProRes film mode in terms of dynamic range. The BMC in ProRes will be plenty good enough for me to start with until I can get a beefier computer and learn how to deal with 2.5K RAW and DaVinici Resolve.

So probably a GH3 in the very near future, and then a BMC as a longer term planned purchase next year.

And shooting with digital8? That's SD only, isn't it?

The second video camera that I owned was a Sony Digital8. I still have that beast.

I might use it on a film that I need some gritty security cam type footage for some scenes. I think my Digital8 has some sort of 16x9 mode that could work for those shots. I suppose I could shoot it in 16x9 and up-convert it to 1080. Anyways, I remember running around filming all kinds of stuff with my Sony, thinking at the time it was such a cool piece of gear (and it was at the time, about 11 years ago). After that is was onto the XL-1s and good old DVX100. Good times.

https://vimeo.com/45596420 done on the gh2 and as others have said there are many film that have been done on lesser cameras. Now if you see your DVx100 to be near as good as a gh2, we might really not have the same way to judge images.

For me the deciding factor will be the DR of the gh3. If the wide DR camera is more into the 12 stop then it will be a sure buy before a BMC. If else, I am going to wait when I have the money and enough feedback on the BMC to make a decision. The gh3 could still have better frame-rate and low light that would put it as a good companion to the BMC. With the resolution and crop factor, the gh3 could be the best B-cam to the BMC, compared to the other Dslr.

It's a matter of perspective really.the latest may not always be the best for what you want to do.its easy to get drown with the technicals at the expense of aesthetics, if back to sd or analog super 8 is what it needs to to shake you up from the electronic trance then so be it. Think we are all becoming techno freaks and Electronic zombies. We shoot bits and pieces and we think we are picassos. Little do we know we are just falling prey to the industry that titillates our imagination so we buy, buy buy more of all the wirings a chips and electronic boards pack into a small object that almost look god when we open the box it came from.

I thint that it will be the BMC the one with best IQ.

But I'm not agree about that it is the most important thing.

Some stills shooters say that the best camera is the one you carry always with you. I think the best camera is the one that allows you to do a better job.

The BMC might give better IQ, but maybe not much better than the GH3. So, the pros and cons of each camera may give a different answer for one job or another.

+1 on this plan - for less than $10,000, two very capable cinema cameras with the same lens mount. As you said later in your post - good times.

For someone coming from an AF100+GH2 perspective, the BMCC mft presents some dilemmas. I think that if you have the audio already sorted out (double system and smart slate) there are no real working advantages in the BMCC over the GH3, and going with a BMCC I instantly would need to duplicate several important focal lengths that I already have covered with mft glass.

I've thought long and hard about this and based on the way that I use cameras off-the-sticks either on a steadicam rig or slider, I have concluded that electronic lens communication is a pretty handy feature. While I can applaud the momentum in the whole RAW capture/workflow thing, if a client demanded it from me, I think I have better solutions available from my nearest rental house.

The bottom line for me is going to be DR, I have limited interest in buying a brand new camera from anyone with 10.5 stops of DR, I had a hard time pulling-out anything definitive in that area from the PB/Panasonic teaser. It also seems to me that Panasonic is "burying" any DR claims when BM and Canon both promoted DR performance in their recent product releases?

A BMCC mft + GH3 package seems practical on the face of it , but I wonder what it will be like trying to match those camera (although admittedly matching a GH2 to AF100 is no cake walk).
