GH2 GH2-X v3 "THIRTY" (Quantum 7 + P-frame 720p Patch for 30MB/s)

Is the 24L mode at 100mbps basically just the same as the Aquamotion 2 patch?

It isn't. Driftwood is trying to figure out how to make it that way, but no such luck so far. This means, spanning is unreliable unless you are using a 95MB/s. Though it seems - any size for 24L, so even the $30 8GB will do for that, but at least 16gb is recommended.

With all due respect to all of us, I know many including myself have bought for the GH2, or have owned the Sandisk 30MB/s SDHC cards, you may want to set these cards aside.
If you want to use the GH2 to the potential that this high bitrate demands, hence spanning and more dependable, you need to buy the 64GB 95M/s SDXC cards.

Stevet:

Those 64GB 95M/s SDXC cards cost like $360 Candian bucks!

Until you are shooting a paying gig that demands that image quality, I can't justify that expense (for myself, anyways).

Save yourself a bundle and order from the states. Considering how close the dollar is I refuse to buy locally until they get the prices in line.

Curious to know what your full kit is. Do tell.

Nothing special, actually. Just a few adapters etc, but trying to decide whether to get a Voigt 25/0.95 or Olympus 12/2 -- Both could be pretty useful with extenders or wide angle converters. Also think I'm gonna go and grab a second body today or monday.

Agreed. Have been ordering from B&H online -- take care of hst and brokerage (very minimal) on the spot, and ship fast and secure with purolator (which won't leave 400 bucks of cards sitting on your doorstep like UPS will). Got my two 64 gb sandisks that way for 199 each.

I haven't thrown out my 32 gigs entirely. I use them on my second GH2 on my wide cutaway shot during interviews and keep the top patch in the other one, which will be onscreen most of the time anyway.

Waiting for patches to balance out and then if the transcend cards 95mbps (which are half the price) still span, may just pick up two more of those -- but I know with the class 10 cards, transcend initially spanned same as sandisk but as patches got better it failed, so don't want to buy any of those just yet.

As for all those old 30 mbps sandisks, well, I guess I'll never run out of reliable cards for the gopro...

No way I can afford those 64GB 95M/s SDXC cards, they're £164 is the UK.

Gonna stick with the 30mbps cards and use a smaller patch when I need to span.

This is exactly why I didn't get rid of the 16gb cards. For interviews, having one camera on a lower bitrate and main cam on the higher w/64gb cards works out perfect. Same deal with anything else, actually. Which means we'll either pick up another pair of 16gbs or two 32s.

With all due respect, unless you definitely want spanning, the 30Mb/s cards are just fine. If you're someone who needs more than 5 minutes in one take, then get a higher-end card. Don't spread such false rhetoric Stevet. The high bitrate doesn't affect the cards what-so-ever. Simply doesn't span.

'Just to clarify: this patch does not have a 1080i option. By boosting 720, 1080i is made unstable because it is entwined. It is only for 720p 60 SH, and 720p 50 H (60 H will do for spanning). For the extreme, its an unstable 720p 60 SH, and a stable 720p 60 H.'

"for the extreme" - What does that phrase mean? Above you say 720p 60 SH is stable, then one sentence later saying its unstable. Please clarify.

I am like many of you in having around 8 Sandisk Extreme Class 10 32GB (30MBs) cards. They are wonderful and continue to serve me well on almost every single patch I have tried. For the time being the only patch I'm looking for is a solid 60fps patch that will allow great slow motion. Lately I have been using Cbrandin's 44M patch as it is very reasonable and most of my clients do not notice the details within the high bitrates. It just isn't 'worth it' to me...

In the original post, there are two variations of the patch posted. One is the extreme 60fps version, which allows an unstable bitrate at SH 60 and the normal stable bitrate for H 60. So, if you only use 60 fps, this allows you to switch between modes when you can afford to work around the loss of absolute stability to achieve the highest quality. The normal version has a stable SH for 60p recording, and H for 60p spanning & stable 50p recording.

Yes, I know. The information is for the complaints regarding spanning.

I find it interesting that some spend $800 on the camera and another 500-1000 in lenses but then complain about spending $200 for a decent card that spans driftwoods Quantum 24H settings.

I'm with you. But not everyone agrees. Last time I brought something like that up it was not well received. I liken it to people who spend $2K to $6K on a video camera and then want to put it on a cheap set of sticks from Wal-Mart or Best Buy. Still, to each his/her own. I will say that Nick is churning out updates to Quantum at an alarming pace. I'm wondering if he sleeps. And if he does sleep, I'm a little frightened of what his dreams are like.

Yes, he certainly works hard striving for the best!

Here is a silly question, is all of this great work on the patches out the window when we finally get the hack for 25p from Vitaly?
