GH2 Gh2 users for Magic Lantern

+1 on this. Seriously, people need to be realistic. The audacity of thinking you can just beg and sign up a lot of other people begging without including any kind of fund.

I don't think we're talking about the same thing, but sure- I agree that devs deserve compensation for their hard work. Not that the Magic Lantern team ever required any kind of funds to support new devices in the past. Yes, the GH2 is a totally new and different monster, and I'm sure many of us would be willing to donate something to support their efforts. But I'm not sure what this has to do with the hacks and development you guys are referring to.

The focus assisting features of Magic Lantern (as well as the audio monitoring) are the hardest things for me to shoot without these days.

I can't imagine pulling focus on the small screen without the Magic Zoom magnification box. I've gotten so used to it being there while filming!

If this is possible, it probably won't happen for a very long time. But yes, count me in +1 if anyone is keeping score!

Can you describe for us exactly what the magic zoom magnification box does? Couldn't find anything on the wiki, and it sounds like the focus assist on the GH2 (when you start to focus a magnification box appears to help you set focus). Thanks.

Magic zoom allows for magnification of a particular area increasing your ability to pull accurate focus.

Sort of like that, only it works during recording as well. As I understand it, the GH2 only does this before starting your shot. Unless I am mistaken?

Edit: Here's a video of someone showing how it works (note- this is an old build, ML is much nicer looking now):

What I'm attempting to do here is just show that there is a community, right here, who would greatly benefit from the features of Magic Lantern. The HACK does not add focusing features or enhanced audio controls. Do you see what I'm getting at?
Yes, but as Phenixone pointed out, there's already a community hard at work on the GH2, right there:

In case it's not clear, Magic Lantern is also HACK, just as PTool is.

Magic Lantern technically needs a hack to work on each camera it is compatible with, but calling the suite a "hack" is a misnomer.

Its not just "some cool features", but rather a unified set of tools that ideally can be made compatible with multiple camera bodies. If you are aware of the popular Rockbox firmware for mp3 players, I think the goal would be something similar. One set of tools, across multiple types of hardware. When one gets a feature update, they all do.

Respect to the developers of PTool (they've done amazing things) but in order to make this happen the folks in charge of developing the Unified Magic Lantern suite would need to get involved.

Thanks, I never realized that. I guess I always thought it would work but never tried it because I figured it would be very distracting to have the magnification while you're recording. Good to know though. Thanks.

+1 for this!

And I agree, Magic Lantern is not a "hack" as much as a suite of tools. Hack is such a dirty word. Support for more than just the current Canon models would be amazing!

Hack is such a dirty word.
I understand your concern, but the comparison is not meant as an insult. If you take a look at this forum's list of sub-forums, you'll see that "hack" is not considered a dirty word here in GH2-land.

Unfortunately, Magic Lantern appears to work only in conjunction with Canon's built-in DSLR firmware. Without access to Panasonic's original firmware source code, transplanting ML to work on a GH2 is a feat that would likely require a small miracle.

That's not true. The features are created by users for users, and there was nothing done in conjuction with Canon, or particularly tied to Canon hardware. It just so happens that the CHDK group had reverse engineered enough of the hardware to make this "small miracle" happen relatively quickly. It could happen here too.
It appears that much of the camera's features are being reverse engineered and documented already.

I'm not going to get anyone's hopes up and say it will happen anytime soon or even at all, but a1ex (one of ML's lead developers) has at least toyed with this idea.

Ipowell, I'm not sure what you think you just proved. Many of us are already quite aware of what CHDK and Magic Lantern are.

CHDK does not work with Canon's SLRs, as they state themselves, and has very little to do with ML. It brings SLR-type functions to point and shoots. When Magic Lantern was being developed, a lot of the reverse engineering of the Digic4 existed because of CHDK, which made their work easier. But none of the stuff is Canon specific, as M. Gilden tried to explain already. Any camera with good documentation can be in the same situation (ie. the stars in alignment aren't restricted to Canon- if Ptool can exist, why can't a full GUI suite?).

On second though, why are you even arguing this? Just for the sake of arguing something? Do you have some sort of a point here? Maybe a1ex was right when he said the GH2 community wouldn't back a project like this anyway.
