GH2 - solutions for the band problem...

Interesting.....no band in Hamburg and lots of it in USA....I usually am no fan of pixelpeeping but I could see this issue here http://vimeo.com/17281822
My idea: faulty production ... hopefully resolveable by exchange models.
and for the grey import from japan in israel: content rules :-)

LOL....Uwe Lansing give it a moment and somene will say they see it in thier imagination. If not .....then they will protest that this isn't good enough. They will instruct you to try and shoot unrealistcally bad and if there is a hint of a line they will feel vindicated...lol

This line issue reminds me about what came out of early an HV20 video with a wobbly helicopter shot. Rolling shutter became synonymous with HV20 and that poor little cam....as good as it is/was blamed for EVERYTHING to do with RS. Since then everyone found out about RS in all CMOS cams. Let's put it this way.....it all got blown way out of proportiion. Here we go again.

If you'll shoot with identical cameras
And one won't have this problem, it's
Not like rolling shutter.. It's a faulty cam.
In a way i prefer all cams would have it.
Less headache for me.

Sure you're right...it might be just a faulty cam. But from what I've been seeing so far it looks like it pops up in less than optimal shooting conditions. I agree with testing this like folks have so as to find out what causes it and possibly report the issue back to Panasonic but I hope this doesn't get blown way out causing mass hysteria...lol.

If some have it and some don't then you'll be in a good positiion for Panasonic to fix it under warranty. It'll be a pain coming all the way from Israel I know....but...the option would still be there.

Someone told me to start looking for a nice Japanese
Resident around dvxuset that'll help me get it to Panny..
Might be a good idea.

Haha..., yes maybe the light isn´t bad enough. But I´ve tried it out several times now under different light conditions, with 3 different lenses (Kit 14-140, Nikon 50/1.4, Nikon 28/2.0), bw and color mode, shutter 1/50 and 1/100... through all possible apertures - no hint of a band be it blue or grey. I don´t know what´s going here...

Ha...don't mind my silliness...just trying to find the humor in all of this. But nevertheless these tests are appreciated.

What about if you tried to shoot a coloured wall, slightly underexposed. I think this would be the easiest setting to see the band if there is one...

Under artificial light, daylight (sun and blue sky or lousy weather), indoors or outside? :-)

Sorry... I should have been more specific. Try to shoot a flat coloured surface underexposed at a higher iso indoors. The reason I am saying this is because this is where the GH13 shows the most banding for me and I would assume that if there is a band for you it would show up the most there. The other sample videos that show the band seem to be in similar conditions...

Edit: artificial light

I was too curious and gave it a quick shot. Its there, no doubt. But the light was really very, very bad, all underexposed and that dark background! Who would ever shoot this way? But OK, its Panasonics turn now...

Thanks for posting... this is very similar to the GH13 banding situations. What ISO were you at? Anyway, I don't think it's a problem. I never see banding on the GH13 because I never shoot in situations like that!

Yep, I see it in the preview image from vimeo alone, running as a tangent to the bottom of the banana :)

So let's say that IF all GH2's have this, then it is either:
- that's the way it is, get over it.
- they didn't plan it to act this way, so they should firmware
Fix it or replace at least 1000 cameras.

What's more logical ? ;)

The truth is, they may not have known about it because they weren't shooting in such unideal conditions. This reminds me of the 7D problem that sometimes you'd get residual information left from the previous image you took. They released a firmware to fix it VERY shortly afterwards. If someone can actually come up with a pretty detailed description of how to reproduce the problem so that someone at panasonic can make it happen, maybe you'll get a fix. But, they never fixed the banding on the GH1 did they? So there is that to go off of.

hmmm.. seems weird you can miss this while doing thorough ISO testings

This reminds me of banding on the GH1 and they did not fix it... I really doubt that they would fix this.
