GH2 Rumors Thread

I am third... I was just going to paste the stupid auto translation of a very very exciting part of the interview: "the GH system update function and shooting professional HD format, we will respond to their demands, we will be adding more professional-grade HD video feature inside."

Just a thought...
With all thats going on with the GH1 hack by Tester 13 and the improvements thats its bringing...
Will it push Panasonic to give us a better GH2 camera on its release than we might otherwise have got ????

Hopefully this will make them sit up and take note of what we really want from the GH2.

I dont know what Panasonic will make of it

But a lot of people will be buying GH1's, irrespective of what they might do, the only thing they can do is 1080p/60, live hdmi out, sound monitoring and time lapse, maybe improve sensor and banding. Global shutter would be nice for eliminating rolling shutter and higher speed footage. However, apart from 1080p/60 all else is window dressing.

If tester13, can figure out live hdmi, timelapse and sound monitoring ie switch off agc, then GH2, who needs it?

Well, global shutter (and presumed elimination of rolling shutter effect) could be a dealmaker for some on the video side. Looking at jobless's high-rate AVCHD footage (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=2012634&postcount=1) the buidlings look like if they were made of jelly (when he is panning hard in the last couple of seconds). Without mud getting in the way the effect is very pronounced ...

Also, there could be improvements on the stills side (better ISO peformance for one).

I'm on c settings and rolling shutter doesnt

seem to be an issue, I havent checked all of jobless footage, but in my own am not seeing alot of rolling shutter, so maybe its due to the high zoom, will check it out.

Note, we already have 720p/60 too which has been improved too. Also, improved iso, if you go to dxomark you will see that GH1 is probably the highest sensitivity camera out there, its very close already to 5dkm2, might even be better, remember iso400 on GH1 is like iso800 on a 5dmk2

Rolling shutter seems to be present only when there is hard horizontal panning going on (as in example above). Likely a very isolated scenario in real world shooting, but might matter for some. But then, there is AG100 on the horizon as well.

I'm not so sure about the latter claim, which I hear repeatedly on many forums. All the systematic tests (say for example dpreview's one http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicdmcgh1/page14.asp) show no advantage (certainly not 1 stop in sensitivity) held by GH1. And of course the bar for ISO performance has been raised by D3s.

Nikon d3s is a very nice camera

But video, GH1 is superior wouldnt you agree? ISO performance on stills for a FF class sensor should be better, agreed also.

Yes the new Pana m43 videocam will be interesting too ;-) but all these high end devices come with a price tag to match. The GH1 for what it offers is incredible value.

Agreed, that's why I have one :) I use it more on the stills side and quite content with what's on offer. Being a video noob and on this forum to learn it is very exciting to see almost stills quality video footage produced with tester13's firmware patches. In fact, I wonder if GH2, when released, can compete :)

Further speculating, history will probably record Tester as single handedly twisting Panasonic's arms into releasing better GH2 and AF100 products. What was that old saying: "if you want change - take up arms" ...?

Totally, all true

Totally, all true

Panasonic have made a gamble that they didnt need to improve codec short term, people would wait and they would roll out an upgrade for GH2 that we would all applaud them for. However, what has been demonstrated is that they were holding back and could of improved the codec all along. The problem for the future is they may further encrypt the f/w somehow, it may even be done securely somehow, I dont know, but I doubt Panasonic are impressed with these events, not as much as we are.;-)

in all actuality, this is good for panasonic. this improvement in the already amazing camera has only turned more people onto their camera(s). just look at how many people have been admiring this camera and saying that they plan to keep it now more than ever. if panasonic frowns at this, they are only hurting themselves. think about this: if you made a product that was pretty good and you sold so many, even had trouble keeping them in stock, then other companies came out with newer products to compete with yours, then the people who bought your product found a way to make the product better than all the newer ones coming out at no cost to you, which in turn helped sell more of the camera, you would probably be pretty happy, even as a profit driven corporation. they would be silly to see this as a bad thing, imo.

all this considered...the dvx100 still sells well. take it down a notch. they know what they're doing.

Seriously. I just sold out again and had to place another order for restocking DVX Book/DVD sets. You'd think after 7 years it would have run its course, but it's totally the Energizer Bunny of the camcorder world. It keeps going... and going... and going...

Any plan to write GH1 book describing shooting various practical footage using GH1?
I am also interested in "Sound for DSLR" book.

Barry, can you please grant this man whatever the heck he wishes! It is a master requesting advice from another master. Awesome to witness!

What would really be cool and freaky was if Tester13 was really the Panasonic engineering staff. That would be the greatest marketing ploy in the history of commerce! This is blowing Canon's doors off.

However, I seriously doubt that corporations have that kind of savvy...
