GH2 official discussion thread

Thanks everyone. I’ll check to make sure auto review is not on, and go to 3 fps and see what happens!

I asked this earlier in the thread but didn't get a response. Does anyone know what the intelligent auto mode is doing for low light that I can't do manually? When I max out the manual settings with iso3200, wide open lens, and even 1/30th shutter speed, when that still leaves me a stop under exposed if I switch to intelligent auto it's correctly exposed. I want to be able to get that extra stop manually. Perhaps it is overriding the iso3200 limit for video, but judging from the amount of noise it doesn't seem to be doing that. I notice its going into "night scene" mode, but what does that do?

To get 6400 iso. Goto manual movie mode. Choose shutter priority in menu. Select 1/30th, push the dial in and add exposure compensation by turning the dial.

Eventually, will the GH2 body only be available? I'm not sure if i want the 14-140. May want to put the extra cash into different lenses...

Thta's a "must have" lens IMO. Very sharp in daylight and with OIS and telephoto etc. it will be like using a traditional camcorder. If the GH-1/2 is what you will be primarily shooting with then I can almost guarantee you there will be a time you wished you had these functions.

But....what do I know. :)

I don't think anyone will argue with you on those points. But what was it I said that you are not agreeing with? It is a sharp lens...in good light. It's wide when you want it and long when you want it. It's has a very good OIS (you'll need it when shooting telephoto) AND Auto focus <<<<with the Canons for example if you get a kit lens it's either one or the other.... So no wonder this thing is ...um.... pricey. If you get the 20mm f1.7 pancake lens with this you would be off to a great start IMO.

I have the kit lens, the 20mm 1.7 and 3 Canon FD lenses. (35mm 2.0, 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8)

95% of the time I use the kit Lens.
That says something i think.

The part I don't agree with is that it is a "must have". It too slow and also big money. For me I use tripod always so no need for ois. For same money you can get a nice zuiko and some other interesting choices. Take a look at the wedding gh2 thread here and it shows the limitations of the kit lens. To me, a kit lens is a starter lens you have until you get ready to raise the chips.

It is a must have if you do any off-the-cuff/run-and-gun shooting. If everything you do is pre-planned and controlled, then I agree it's downgraded from 'must', to just 'handy'. I'd imagine most indie and amateur shooters will fall into the former category quite often.

Having said that, ETC has changed the 'need' for this lens a little bit, allowing a flexible range of focal lengths using the 3 Panny primes 14, 20 and 50. Giving 14, 20, 36, 50, 52, 130. If you use GH1/2 for stills though, the 14-140 is a great flexible all round solution though.

Used the kit lens on my last job again. Must have for sure. The only thing that really stinks is the connection problem to the camera. ^^

I have found, that if you rub the contact points of the camera and the lens with paper from an ordinary newspaper (not a magazine) this helps a lot and you get rid of contact problems.

It worked for me.

A surfing video at 1560 mm

http://www.vimeo.com/17991285

I saw this video this morning. The poster said, “This short video gives an early idea of how useful I'm finding the GH2 Extra Tele combined with the 100-300mm lens for sports shots. Shot on a tripod in FSH AVCHD 60fps and slowed 3x in SonyVegas Pro. 300mm x 2 x2.6 = 1560mm”
I tried this with a heavy Miller tripod and Sachtler head that works great with my EX1R, but it was difficult to use smoothly with the lightweight GH2 and 100-300 lens. The posted of the surfing video said he used, :I used the Manfrotto 3021BPRO (replaced I think now by Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro) tripod and 700RC2 fluid head -- about $160 and $90, resepectively.”
My tripod and head are pretty heavy, although I do carry them some distance using the shoulder strap that comes on the Miller. Does anyone have an suggestions for a good, stable tripod and fluid head that is lighter and therefore more portable? I have seen good results posted from someone using a Manfrotto 561BHDV-1 video monopod with 701HDV fluid head, but I doubt it would work very well at these magnifications.
I think I will also try the AVCHD at 60FPS - I did not realize it was available, and have been using the 24P setting for motion (and everything else) because of the higher bit rate,
Thanks,
Bill

Guys, what's happened with Panasonic??? It's impossible to buy a GH2 in the USA, out of stock in all stores, my gosh.

Please, if anyone knows any store that has the camera, let me know.

Thanks,
Henrique

Get back in line, no cuts - LOL! Seems every one is in a hurry to get their hands on the GH2 so the demand is high now and probably for the next few months. If you don't mind dealing with PD you can order a Silver body now and maybe get it by next week. I ordered a silver body only from PD last Friday and hope to get it by this Friday but I am not holding my breath. Had a call from PD CS two days ago confirming my CC purchase then an email (no tracking number yet) saying it was at the dock ready to ship. I paid for expeditied delivery so we will see if that was worth it or not.

Update: The GH2 was deliverred today being ordered 12/17 from PD. PD still shows 2-3 day shipping on the Silver GH2 and they seem to be holding to that.

Agree about the all round comment as when traveling it makes for a great compact setup for my GH1 even though I have several other lenses to use as you do under more controlled conditions. There are some great deals on the GH1 kit available now and it is still a great camera in most regards just not quite as good as the GH2 seems to be based on the current posts.

What Zuiko equivalent lens?

I am curious which one or more specific lenses you consider a must have or better selection than the 14-140?

I see you guys haven´t lived thru comunism :D
I remember my grandad waiting in line in front of the shop for 2 weeks just to get a car! People were paid just to stand in line instead of you... And you couldn´t choose a color, model, anything. You were glad if you got a car at all. :D
So just be patient, it´s christmas so I would expect the shops to be robbed out by now. I´m shure they´ll have them in stock in january. ;)

BTW: front of that very same car, is in the avatar ;) it still works even 21 years from when it´s been made and I´m not willing to sell it! (it´s not worth it, I´ll probably get 500 euro at best :D , secondly, it´s in mint condition, thirdly it´s such fun to drive - no ABS, ESP, even servo steering, just pure driving expirience :D ) + it´s a very handy camera car, we´ve shot dozens of videos thanks to it, even when everyone laughs at it, when it comes to get up a snowy hill, all the bimmers and mercs are... well, in short.... effed :D but a 21 old comunistic made, bertone designed Skoda Favorit has no problems there ;).
