GH2 official discussion thread

I see you guys haven´t lived thru comunism :D
I remember my grandad waiting in line in front of the shop for 2 weeks just to get a car!

Have you ever thought about making a documentary short about your car? I'm serious; you could use the story of that car as a way of exploring the history of communism and its impact on your family; the way you live now vs. the way your Granddad lived then. Great story.

To be honest, I have thought of a very similar thing. It would be a nice challange. ;) thank you. And I would LOVE to maki it on a GH2.
BTW: I´m just waiting on someone from UK to start to mock about that I have a Skoda :D
And I have to apologize for being off topic. sory.

EDIT: if someone´s interested, i found a Topgear review of the car :D

The oly 4/3 12-60mm f2.8 is faster. Sharper, wider. And better. It still has plenty of tele with over 200mm equivalent 35mm reach. Kit lens is always meant as "let's get you going" lens. The 14-140 has the function of typical kit lens but at price of a good lens. Lot of people angry they are stuck to buy it. The great thing about gh2 is unlimited lens choice, so why stick yourself and ding your budget with kit lens? Well maybe if you just shoot outside sports at day time.

The olympus being 1 stop faster than Pana, shouldn't be easily compensated with ISO ?
Tha Panasonic 14-140 looks a quality lens for video or am I wrong ?

A full stop is signicant! That mean half the light as 2.8. It also mean less dof. 2.8 isn't even fast, so once you go past 2.8 you're getting to area most shooters think is slow glass. So that is my reason for disagree with what others here are saying that a kit lens could be must have or best everyday lens. Me, id like to own the kit but for me it is worth 200 or 300 dollar. No way 800. Come on guys. That kit lens is a soccer mom lens.

the 14-140 feels much better then those horrible kit lenses you find on cheap DSLRs. I mean the focus ring is something you can actually hold and twist. Sharpness is good, auto focus fast and precise and the MEGA O.I.S. is very helpful. Shooting hand held in ETC mode at 14mm with OIS on is much smoother.
Its just to slow for most non lit indoor work. How ever I'm using it more then I thought I would. Shooting with long lenses without OIS in ETC is very hard and I really hate this rolling shutter wobble.

I think that silent focus, silent zoom, autofocus alone are worth it. F isn´t everything
If you're recording audio separately, the 14-140mm's silent operation doesn't make much difference. On the tele side, I think the OIS Lumix 45-200mm is a better choice than the 14-140mm. For wide angles, I sold my 14-140mm kit lens and bought an Olympus 14-54mm f2.8-3.5 Mark II auto-focus zoom and haven't regretted it since.

Does the Olympus autofocus work OK on GH1?
Olympus made two versions of the 14-54mm zoom. The older model auto-focuses on the G2 and GH2, but not on the GF1 and GH1. The newer "Mark II" version of the Oly 14-54mm auto-focuses (in AFS mode) on all Panasonic G-series cameras.

Appreciated you guys going back and forth on the 14-140. I kind of feel as Ian mentioned. The Canon kit lens are not good. This 14-140 has a great range and the IS there is specific to the GH2. Its a run-gun dream. Every video i've seen is just crisp and clean. So, i'll probably go with that and the pancake lens. I'm kind of going back/forth whether to sell my T2i. The new hack is amazing...but i think the best combo is a GH2 and 5DMkIII when that comes out.

Glad to learn that particularly from you as a highly respected contributor. My new 14-54 II arrives tomorrow to be mounted on my Silver Body Only GH2 delivered this evening from PD ordered 12/17 with express shipping. Had the 14-54 Mark I and really enjoyed it on the E-620 but decided the Mark II would be a better combination on the GH2. Do you notice any improvement in focus speed or accuracy of the Mark II on the GH2 compared to the GH1? I still have the GH1 kit with the 14-140 and plan to keep it even though it can't be hacked being a late model. Also, I have the Oly 70-300 which is a nice affordable lens even on the GH1 because it does AF and I mainly use it on a tripod. I am looking forward to using some of my legacy Minolta MD lenses on the GH2 with the new Extended Tele feature for video. However, the Pany 45-200 is affordable enough to have because of the OIS so I may opt for that lens instead of the new 100-300 as it is a bit out of my budget range at the moment. Any thoughts on the new 100-300?

I don't have a GH2 yet, but I've been testing the G2, which has many of the same features, including Extended Optical Zoom and touch screen focusing. While the Oly 14-54mm Mark II auto-focuses consistently and reliably, it's neither quick nor silent. In AFS mode on both GH1 and G2, the Mark II will execute a short 2-step, in-and-out maneuver to auto-focus, even when it's already correctly focused. I haven't tried to accurately time it, but I'd estimate it takes a little over a second to focus-lock. The Mark II is quick, however, compared to the non-SWD Olympus 50-200mm f2.3-3.5, which goes through a 6-step ratcheting process to achieve focus-lock (on the G2 that is, since it can't auto-focus on the GH1).

In contrast to the Oly lenses, the Lumix 45-200mm f4-5.6 focuses almost instantly with no hunting and barely a sound. If it's already in focus, it will simply flash the focus rectangle without making a focus-lock beep. As far as I can tell, the 45-200mm focuses just as fast on the GH1 as on the G2.

I haven't tried the Panasonic 100-300mm f4-5.6 zoom, mostly because it's heavier and costs twice as much as the 45-200mm. The 300mm reach is also not as useful to me as a 45mm wide end. What makes the 45-200mm uniquely attractive is its compact size and light weight combined with OIS. The Oly 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 is a superb lens, but it's not something I'd want to try to hold steady in my own hands.

new hack for Canon T2i with some amazing features:

He has given it the following features:

  • GUI menus: press the ERASE button to display them
  • Bit rate control (QScale parameter) for the H.264 encoder
  • Zebra stripes for overexposed / underexposed areas
  • Spotmeter, histogram
  • Cropmarks (16:9, Cinemascope, Fisheye)
  • Simple intervalometer
  • Trap Focus: camera takes a picture when something comes in focus
  • Wireless trigger with the LCD face sensor & your own hand
  • AE bracketing (like on 5D2 ML)
  • Rack focus
  • Stack focus (Live View only)
  • Lens data computation
  • Onscreen audio meters
  • Manual audio gain, selectable input source, disable AGC and digital filters
  • Display time remaining during video recording
  • Debug functions (display CMOS temperature, screenshot, logging)
Magic Lamtern is cool!!

could these features ever be hacked on the GH cameras?

Ipowell, i've noticed you have posted you like the Lumix 45-200 f4-5.6 OIS quite a few times and it's a lens i'm looking closely at buying as i need a tele with OIS and good Auto focus for the GH13 video in daylight. The 14 -140 is just too expensive for what i want it for and i have heaps of manual FD's and the 20mm pancake. How would you rate the 45-200 vs 14 -140 for video? You said the 45- 200 is quick to focus, any other comparisons? Sharpness, etc.

B and H have 45-200 for $265 so it's a very cheap tele with OIS and auto focus.

Thanks.

First, this is not news.
Second, most of this had been available for 5D.
Third, to do anything like that we need serious developers.
And even in this case we won't be able to do many items because of huge difference in debug and similar data available.

Why not do a collaboration with Tremmal's gang. They may also benefit from your knowledge.
