GH2 official discussion thread

As far as I can tell from the interlaced frames, we are getting 24p monitoring. (*the way it skips a frame of motion every few frames)
But when it comes to 422 - the interlace, sensor noise, and few still/in focus color contrast moments make it very hard to tell whats going on.
*probably not good to post anyone's face up as public image... but the second vid in the timeline is the 24 to 60i I believe
What we need next (from anyone who can eventually) is a still, well lit shot of color squares with some random color objects, provided in both the original 422 prores progressive capture, and the simultaneous Avchd recorded on the gh2.
Good job Roei.

hmm interesting.. and what if i'll upload the camera recordings? will it help a bit?

No, don't worry about it for me, I can't tell about the 422 with the 60i (*exported as 30fps) prores.

Roei, what software did you use to do the capture: FCP or BlackMagic Media Express? I'm not familiar with either, but given the former is an NLE it should have a base timeline setting which once set will conform the source. I'm on Windows 7 and cannot even get the file to playback (just a black screen in QuickTime 7.6, which is latest version that includes the ProRes decoder). Movie Inspector shows format as: "Uncompressed 10-bit YUV 1920x1080", which is ProRes 10-bit 4:2:2. Crucially, Movie FPS is 29.97, which leads me to think that capture software has conformed 24fps source to 30fps timeline, which would explain excessive "judder." What happens when timeline is set to 23.976? If you cannot capture then that would suggest 24PsF (24p-in-60i wrapper) output in HDMI Monitoring mode, in which case pull-down needs to be removed prior to export. I'm not sure how that is done in FCP.

well,
in final cut it didn't read the camera- tried with with exact same settings. it was working only in media express which is a very basic capture tool.
about pc playback, i have the same problem too.. can't figure it out yet.

I think I speak for everybody but thank you Roei Z for your hard work, we will solve this puzzle soon am sure.
A strong second to this. Roei Z, thank you very much!

It may not be obvious, but I believe that there are many more people (like me) who read your posts but just don't comment. I suspect that for every person that replies here, there are three to five people who have benefited from your hard work!

I'm ordering my GH2 this weekend from B&H. Video will be a big part of how I use it. Your work is a great kick starter for getting the most out of my GH2!

Again, thank you!

Dan

no problem. if i knew there's a point to experiment some more with the Blackmagic i would give it another try, BUT-
i think the best results would come from a nanoflash.. i think the Blackmagic is picky and too delicate to behave as needed. i bet that on a nano you can force set the format and disregard what the camera "tells" you to set up in order to be read. hope i'm not totally wrong.

If you did want to experiment w/ the card again, this may help (from a post i made earlier):
'Methinks the problem is that the card gets confused depending on the first stream it detects going into it. Because the gh2 is supposedly 60i until you record on it, the next best thing to try would be to connect the black magic card only after the gh2 is recording. Then maybe it would detect the 24p stream and auto capture at 24p. If not, the card needs to be set to 24 first, then connected while the gh2 is recording.'

yea but it's such a big roundabout way isn't it? i mean it's not a thing you would actually consider doing every shot you make, would you?
(i doesn't mean i won't try to try it next time)

No - but - I think it would not be an issue for the Ninja... the blackmagic is finicky, and based on an evolving platform, whereas the ninja is self contained to do a single job. I think it would likely record 24 if it was set to do so, with whatever comes through the hdmi. (just guessing there)

and if the nano can lock on 23.976, it means we don't have to also record on camera right?

From what I've heard the gh2 only puts out 24p over hdmi when you start recording, so you would have to record on cam too.

No, seriously, this might be a good move for the ME supply for us PAL users, if you know somebody in Dubai they can buy it tax free, save 20%, get them to ship it privately packaged, no duty to pay, or decalre as a min value.:cheesy: honestly, I'm getting mine from Dubai much better deal, no 30min cap, pal format. yes!

Not entirely sure if that's wise.

First, there's the warranty side of things - what happens if the GH2 exhibits some of the quality flaws that early GH1's had?

Second, I do know that HMRC has been told to tighten up on 'Gift' packages - for a long time now, loads of items have escaped duty through a combination of incompetence and inertia.

However, in these straightened economic times, there are now targets to be met - and if you are deemed to have conspired in evading duties and VAT, the penalties are going to hurt.
