GH2 official discussion thread

Thanks for these posts.

If you are able, could you please comment on the HDMI out - more specifically: is the video at the same rate as the capture mode - and is it possible to completely remove the overlay icons?

Thanks very much.

It appears so, when I dropped out of cinema mode into 720/60p the video was a lot smoother and fluid. And yes, you can get all the icons to go away while recording. Live resolution on the TV looks good, whether or not it's as high as the original video is hard to say but I could make out small text when I was both playing the video back and watching it being recorded live

Wow, it looks good though check out the youtube clip of the guy on the boat, weatherproof, dustproof, lcd didnt seem to stop Canon guys? 1080p in mjpeg at 25fps, that is something and look at the DR on dxo its off the chart. this may be the ultimate euro hybrid dslr, plus the Pentax optics?

Theres no manual control though

Should us PAL users be thinking the Pentax K-5, now this really has moved the game in DR, look at its score! plus 1080p in mjpeg at 25fps, now this may just be the camera!

Darwinfish has posted an impressive clip from similar fairground but it is intervalometer, built-in on Pentax, wow.

Wow, this thing is the business, only thing would like is 60fps! always something, this camera has zero rolling shutter, look at this

The timelapse is meaningless because it's just stills put into a movie. The north sea clip looks awful to me, certainly not like good 1080p, but its hard to tell whose fault that is (youtube vs. editor vs. camera) since we don't have the raw footage.

You can set aperture and you have ae lock, what more do you want? the guy was in the middle of the North Sea and I think its compressed to hell, actually I am impressed. Look at the low light, it may well be pitch dark, need to see more though, agreed.

Shutter and Iso Control. I agree though Pentax are great stills cameras and the video mode looks good.

You set your iso, you set the camera at your desired aperture and point your camera for desired shutter and hit ae lock? bang, done, but maybe its more difficult, dont know will try it in a shop! 25fps looks good though, real 25fps!

Thanks for that.

I realize more "sleuthing" might be necessary in order to confirm the integrity of the HDMI signal.
But, that would seem to imply the possibility of recording uncompressed HDMI with an external box.

I must note, with literally dozens of emotionally-charged posts behind us on this very subject -- I'm a bit surprised that I am the first to ask this question -- and that no one else seems all that excited about the growing likelihood that this functionality is possibly going to be available.

So, is there any absolute test to see if the HDMI out, hasn't run through the AVCHD or MJPEG first? I'm wondering within the camera, if the sensors stream goes first to any Camera modes, B&W, etc, then gets compressed and written to the card. So, do we see in the viewfinder just after the camera mode but before the compression? Or we see the stream after it is encoded, then decoded to go out to the display? I can't imagine Panasonic would'nt cripple a direct uncompressed HDMI stream.

What I am amazed in general about the hack, and what can be brought out of relatively cheap hardware. And if you can get a non compressed stream via HDMI to record that would be WOW!

PS regarding the banding I see in low contrast low light shots, like a contour map, is there any post processing, plug-ins that can smooth that out without disturbing any sharp detail? I have some rack focus shots from, out of focus to sharp focus. But I get those contour banding.

Thanks

About HDMI out.

It is not 1080 or 720. It uses different (but still quite high) sensor readout resolution to archieve 120fps.
Moire is much easier to spot in LV mode.
After you hit record mode will change to proper sensor mode.
And it is source (so called raw) footage, before any compression.

I've read this before -- from you and others.

Just to be sure I am understanding you correctly:

1. I believe you are saying that when the camera IS NOT in record mode -- the HDMI signal is neither 1080 nor 720 -- although it is sufficient resolution for focus assist.

2. However, when the camera IS IN record mode -- the HDMI signal is smooth, stutter-free and uncompressed.

3. And, when in record more, the video profile of HDMI signal (resolution and framerate) -- always matches the camera's internal record setting profile (1080i/60, 1080p/24, etc ...).

4. And, it seems we now have confirmation that the overlay icons can actually be disabled on the HDMI output signal.

That would seem to imply that we can record uncompressed video over HDMI -- using one of the three well-known portable external recording devices?

Am I correct ... or is there some catch to this?

Furthermore, after all of those posts on this subject -- why isn't anyone else excited about this? </Rhetorical Question>

Is it the cost and encumbrance of an external recorder -- or the hopefulness of a possible hack that "bridges" the gap?

Yes. But it is about 720 resolution. Most probably even higher. So, very good.

Judging from footage that I have (captured using BlackMagic card) it is so.

It looks like it.

I can't say here anything, as all footage that I have contains overlay icons.

Most people won't buy even external monitor.
And external recorder (with $1000 + SSD cost) is too much for many.
So, you won't find extreme excitment.
Generally, about 50-80% of people who use only uncompressed footage don't need this and could be ok with AVCHD.
One of the good things is that you always have backup of your work.

Anyone tried the 3d lens on the gh2. What happens when you select video mode and shoot without lens option. Wonder if you set aperture whilst its on a gh2 then switch the camera off, remove the lens and cover the electrical contacts, put it back on, shoot some video. Might be able to do something with this footage in post.

Russian review site - ixbt.com made this experiment (they are famous by their awful and extremely strange camera reviews).
All you got are two distored pictures :-)

So, in theory is it possible that through Rom Hacking (firmware mod or patch) you could "paint" the pixels of the on-screen indicators "transparent" or "invisible" color so that they would not be seen on the output?
