GH2 official discussion thread

Andrew Reid and Joe Dono should go bowling together.

Really...? Haha, Ok I know that some guys here (especially some mods) have problems with him. I could read it between the lines. I don´t know why - to my mind its a nice guy. And he was the first one who discovered the mud-problem with the gh1.... but that´s all a different ball game now.
But I wanted to tell you: in a few hours you can download some original gh2 mts-files. One around 100 MB and 1 around 500MB. But its only 720p50. So, stay tuned!

What is the best way to give feedback to Panasonic?

Two effective ways I can think of:

1. Become good friends with a senior manager with responsibilities for product development in the area you are interested in.

2. Become a very well known camera/video authority figure with a popular website and thousands of visitors per day. Then when you say something that can affect the purchasing decisions of many people, manufacturers will tend to take your opinion more seriously.

A not so effective way but easier to do is just e-mail or call Panasonic. If you're a registered Panasonic customer you can contact support through their website and usually get a reply... but that's more for questions and problems with existing products. When using that route, they don't seem to take suggestions and questions about upcoming products seriously.

Hi, AKED.

There's something I've been wondering about regarding the touch-to-focus feature: How does it work with the different focus modes?

Relatedly, does the GH2 (like the GH1) ignore AFS (single autofocus) in video mode and switch to AFC?

If on the GH2 we have a one-time focus AFS in video mode, then the touch-to-focus feature could be like the push-to-autofocus feature on some video cameras -- which would be wonderful!

Well, you have to switch on follow focus. I think it was also AF-C.
Then touch the screen and you have it.

How much do you really lose with the de-interlace, with new tools like these for example? OK this is mac, but am sure similar available for win. too http://www.nattress.com/Products/FinalTouch/FTGSmartDeint.htm

Do you people think there is any chance for Pana to enable 1080p50 in future firmware updates? If someone is going to address Panasonic for not having 25p just go for 50p instead as that would pretty much solve the 25p case as well.

Still wondering if I'll have to wait for GH3 before getting a camera with 1080p50 :(
No deinterlacing tool, no matter how sophisticated, can guarantee reliable results. For static footage it very well may work, but for dynamic shots there will be interlace artifacts presents.

The problem should not be introduced in camera to begin with. The sensor already outputs 50 or 60 progressive frames per second. We must be able to get that in an AVCHD file, just like TM700 owners. The playback problem is solved easily -- footage should be watched via HDMI cable with camera outputting 1080i if necessary to stay compatible with older TVs. Obviously, all Viera TVs with SD card slots need an upgrade to be able to play 1080/60p footage natively.

The only chance we'll get is if we fire up the "suggestion thread" right now. I for one, will not be looking at getting a GH2 until I can get a 1080p60 out of the cam. I will contintue buying other Panasonic products however, that are not crippled.

They said: "We are not interested in choppy footage. We want video". And I think this is true for most of the normal GH1/GH2 customers.
And this is what they got with 50i now.
I am sure that on 100 buyers of the GH1, only 1 at the most would want 25p.

But this is only my guess.

Firstly, AKED big thanks for your work.

But you are horribly wrong about your guess.
I would bet that it is more likely the opposite.

25P at 1080 is more likely an absolut must for most PAL users.
Nobody wants interlaced unless progressive is not a choice.
Better yet if there was a 1080 50p.

But please no interlaced anymore - it is ancient remnant and a horrible
compromise.

24p will work for film out but if you want progressive FHD footage it would
be far better in PAL area to have it 25p.

Not to mention if the 24p is 24.xxxxx something not exact 24p.

Please panasonic, fix this horrible mistake in the release models by
putting in at least a possibility to shoot same way as GH1 25p in 50i wrapper!

Most probably it won't happen.

I also prefer 1080i50 to 1080p25 for my own needs.

I am afraid too that it will or cannot be implemented annymore. Shame.

But for what comes to using 24p, it will produce sound and other issues in post at lest for me. Mixing 25p with 24p footage will be somewhat problematic too.

Also I am not suggesting to replace 1080i50 with 25p but instead having it as an extra option. By having an option to replace 50p input from sensor with everyother frame duplicated would do it. But i guess it is not a minor change at this point.

Anyway GH2 appears to be a great tool and thanks to Panasonic for listening the users.
