GH2 official discussion thread

Just my 2 cents thoughts

Just my 2 cents thoughts

Hi from Madrid!

Great job here all, I´m reading this thread since the very first minute and love the passion and work everybody puts on writing.

That said, I think the GH2 has good enough improvements over GH1, and should be enough powerful just out of the box and without any hack.

*If you wish true film look just set it as:
-1080p/24 which should be, by far, much better than old 720p/24 indy format so widely used

* If you wish video film look get with:
- 1080/50i or 1080/60i depending of your country and you can sell your production to any tv station around the world.

*tv spots, promos, special effects, slow mo, etc. go with:
- 720/50p or 720/60p and you´ll get wonderful slow sequences and vey nice shorts.

* web video:
- use just what you want, experiment, play with the different codecs, software, fx, etc, etc.

As said, just all what you want, ready out of the box.

If the hack comes (which I hope sooner than later, Vitaliv) then much better, we, here all the freaks, will enjoy all that extra stuff we can get form this great machine.

Last word, I pre order my GH2 yesterday here in Spain at fotoboom online store and received confirmation. Price is still not confirmed, but should be under 1400€ with 14-140 lens. First in the list :))))

Agreed, 100%

Agreed, 100%

+1, Out of the box 24p should be good in any country:D these new external recorders if the hdmi is pure look totally awesome.

moin everybody.
...
but if you wish to realize a progressive film-project at 24p and you would like to use slomos at 720p50/60p in your project, you can t go without transcoding.
would make more sense to have 1080p25 or 1080p30 for projects that also contain 720p50/720p60. 1080p24 and 720p50/60 isnt that compatibel.
For me 25p60p is a must have.

Just to let you know:

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p

Most movies released on Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD can produce a full 1080p High Definition picture when the player is connected to a 1080p HDTV with an HDMI cable. However, the Blu-ray Disc video specification only allows encoding of up to 1080p24 signal

That was something new for me. But Panasonic, if you read this, please reenable 25p if possible.

Wow, I am positively amazed:
One sales manager from Panasonic at the Photokina, to whom I talked to yesterday, just called me now and told me officially, that the GH2 has B-frames.

And he said that it is the first camera G-series Camera, that has the b-frames implemented in the codec. Also the G2 does not have B-fames.

i told you, Panasonic is listening.

Yeah.
May be he just read our thread :-)

Don't you have other representative who promised you camera to test?
May be it'll be next week call?

Stop crying about 25p. This is a much more reasonable request for the Euro market, and may lend to the first firmware upgrade for the GH-2. It can't be hard for the Panny engineers to implement, and the Euro market is pretty big. Why alienate 25p countries for a simple firmware update. Hopefully they aren't already rolling that feature into the release firmware.

PS, Vitaliy, Have you seen in the firmware how the camera controls the autofocus motor in the lens? I wonder if it would be possible to one day, either via USB or wirelessly, follow focus directly to the built in AF motor. I think the Magic Lantern guy was hint of that for the canons.

Would be a cool feature. Say a blutooth follow focus.

Andrew Reid just mentioned it on his blog:
I did discover a new function yesterday though. The super-slow shutters are now available in 1080p, great for timelapses and dream sequences. You can go as low as 1/2 in video mode on the shutter when previously it was 1/30.
Nice feature!

If true, this is indeed nice feature. I wish, that GH13 had this feature.

Some parts of LSI dedicated to AF, algorithms and, most importantly, doubled framerate in LV (120Hz pictures).
Contrast focus uses smart algorithm calculating small picture areas contrast parameters (up to only two pixels) and adjusting lens so it'll be maximal (in sharp image pixels are more distinct from each ther).

That went over my head!

For the techno challenged like me, that would be an yes or no ?

Anyway, it certainly gives 14-140 more muscle and relevance. Hopefully to the other lenses as well.

Well, in 720/50p it has.
Go into movie mode with the to wheel and then select manual in the menu for video.
The choose manual focus, MF and now you can go down with the shutter speed as far a 1/2 a second . Unfortunately not in 1080.

AKED
write his phone number
I and many people would call him
I'm from Russia call
someone from Holland
ask him for the full program :)

Schreiben Sie seine Telefonnummer
Ich und viele Leute würden ihn nennen
Ich bin aus Russland nennen
Jemand aus Holland
fragen Sie ihn für das volle Programm :)

If you have a question, just write.

Hi, AKED.

There's something I've been wondering about regarding the touch-to-focus feature: How does it work with the different focus modes?

Relatedly, does the GH2 (like the GH1) ignore AFS (single autofocus) in video mode and switch to AFC?

If on the GH2 we have a one-time focus AFS in video mode, then the touch-to-focus feature could be like the push-to-autofocus feature on some video cameras -- which would be wonderful!

Do you people think there is any chance for Pana to enable 1080p50 in future firmware updates? If someone is going to address Panasonic for not having 25p just go for 50p instead as that would pretty much solve the 25p case as well.

Still wondering if I'll have to wait for GH3 before getting a camera with 1080p50 :(
