GH2 official discussion thread

Awesome! Thanks...

Looks like HDMI out is really a reality for this camera. Way to 1-up the competition Panasonic.

(actually more like 8-up)

One up? I can go with that. But 8 up? The Canon line does have HDMI out - not perfect, but certainly good enough for color/focus/composition.

And a cam like the T2i has a 3" hi-def screen (1.04 million dots) - perhaps the best on any DSLR - and certainly good enough for focusing. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice option to have, but not a deal breaker for most.

What will be interesting is whether the production line GH2 is as good as a hacked GH1. Live HDMI by itself isn't enough in my mind if other aspects remain crippled.

Sorry...I also have to comment about:

"Panasonic is listening for the wishes of the customers. But intentionally not communicating these wishes in forums."

Ha ha...yes they did indirectly...the gift of version 1.34.

Well I was away when the unhackable GH1 came up. So I did not follow the threads there.
But in another German forum I was told, that the 1.43 was not a reaction on the hack und just came out just about that time.
Vitaliy might confirm or not confirm, if the Firmware 1.34 is a result of the hack or not.

Also a talked about the rather low bps rates compared to the hacked rates and the production manager said, that Panasonic has to watch the compatibility chain to the TV sets. You shall be able to put the SD card fro the camcorder into the Panasonic TV and it shall just work.

Figured it was for broad compatibility. That's what standards are for.

Still, I wish they would at least give advanced users the option of setting higher bitrates and progressive recording. Just make it clear that those recordings may not play properly on all devices.

Yes, I also suggested to make a menu point: professional use.
Maybe that you only get access to that when registering, so that normal users cannot get there and make the GH2 unusable for them.
Well, keep suggesting, perhaps thy read it.

I think the "Firmware request" thread was good, because it bundles all wishes for further improvement.
Perhaps we should make this for a GH3 or firmware update for the GH2, once it is out and in the hands of the users.

Impressive. Taken with the ability to touch screen focus, it certainly adds lot of creative options when shooting video that would other wise be not easy with manual focusing without adding shake.

It is extra risky in practice. AF can start hunting or misses focus, and you have real problem. But for normal life it is good solution.
FF with predefined points must be added in firmware update.

Sorry, but I´m still a bit confused about this 1080i50 thing. What you´re going to get if you make a deinterlacing of that footage? 1080p50? 1080p25? 540p25?.......?

true 540p50, or bad 1080p25 (2 half-pictures at 2 different times mixed together)

Agree that a pro would rather trust follow focus to the machine AF. As you said, for normal use it will still have its uses. When it can nail it correctly, sudden shift of focus between subjects far apart would look cool, compared to the progressive change of focus.

I was wondering what would prevent Panny to add this AF performance to GH1? Less processing power of GH1 (?) or marketing strategy? The lens is obviously not the factor.

Thanks divide - but hmm... in old pal times a tool like "fieldskit" made a really good job of deinterlacing from 50i to 25p. Sorry, if this has already been discussed (I didn´t follow the whole thread) but what´s now the main difference?

Aked, thanks for taking the time to go through this all with the reps, it's greatly appreciated.

Good news on the HDMI front and audio out, but I don't understand why they would drop the best feature from the GH1- 1080 25p! Do they not have product development meetings in Europe, South America, Australia blah, blah?

There are some good deinterlace solutions, so yes, you aren't stuck with a half loss in quality, but there will be some.

Ok - that sounds a little bit better. So, if I absolutely have to get 1080p25 out of this footage (1080i50) I just need to deinterlace it properly with an excellent tool (with some minor loss in quality) and its done!? Please, I need some original 1080i50 footage to figure that out... :-)

Some parts of LSI dedicated to AF, algorithms and, most importantly, doubled framerate in LV (120Hz pictures).
Contrast focus uses smart algorithm calculating small picture areas contrast parameters (up to only two pixels) and adjusting lens so it'll be maximal (in sharp image pixels are more distinct from each ther).

The Japanese site says that when you touch the screen to select a new point of focus, the camera will adjust the focus to your new point -smoothly-.

It would have been nice if they let people set the focus transition speed curve the way some Sony video cameras do.
