GH2 official discussion thread

One thing about this tele conv mode has my curiosity up.

If I understand it, when zoomed in all the way it simply becomes a crop mode of the center 1920x1080 pixels. But what happens BETWEEN nonzoomed and the fully zoomed in crop mode? Will it just offer a couple of jumps, will it be continuous, or is it an "all or nothing" setting? And if it does offer several/continuous levels of zooming, how do you think they'll do it? Are there 2,3 or more different binning/scaling routines that will be used along the way? If so I wonder if there will be certain "sweet spots" along the way where different scaling routines kick in

For those who will purchase the camera from Japan, will it work in the USA, and will it have english menues. Would one run into any problems with the cam in the US?

As usual, the cameras sold in Japan have Japanese menus only. (website states this)

Otherwise, it should work in the US. The video system is the same NTSC between the US and Japan, and the power adapters for cameras are usually 100-240V compatible.

There are many cameras with digital zoom that do simulate a continuous zoom. So even if there is a quality loss at a non optimized zoom ratio, it should work. That's my hopes. If not why call it a zoom? Zoom implies varying levels of focal length. If it is just 2.6x,than that is no different than the different CROP options for still frames.

Granted, at this price point, it seems like a great deal, especially if all the improvements mentioned are the case. But knocking out the AF100 sales for those who were getting one, I don't see it. Nothing about the GH2 has swayed my decision, and given the recent changes to the GH1 to prevent hacking, I can only imagine that the GH2 will follow down the same path.

I don't think that will happen as Panasonic has encrypted the latest GH1 firmware. They probably did the same with the GH2. Same reason why the Canon 7D will not be targeted by the Magic Lantern guy; it's protected.

Even better would be add a 25 fps option in "cinema mode" for the PAL version.

Let's just hope this a last minute school boy error. It's possible that this could be added via a firmware update, if so.

It is better to stop your speculation.

Panasonic did not make any encryption in GH1 firmware, just changed update process.
You don't know anything about GH2.

And Canon 7D is not targeted by ML for unknown reasons only. As firmware can be decrypted completely and it is impossible to get any info about mystic "update counter" as for now from developers.

silent shutter (bypassing mechnical shutter?)

silent shutter (bypassing mechnical shutter?)

1) Does GH2 offer some options to bypass mechnical shutter? (40fps burst?) it would be great to bypass mechnical shutter entirely when shooting some kind of still pictures, as some long exposure (vulnerable to any slight vibration) \ classical concert (totally silence needed) \ animal or pet.

2) Does GH2 allow users to magnify some part of image as Manual Focus assistance when shooting video? MF assist of GH1 seems not working during video recording.

3)Does GH2 allow AVCHD video recording seamlessly extended to another file bypassing 4GB limit( then the only factor limiting one take duration would be the size of SD card) as GH1 ?

thanks

looks like its interlaced. :-((
look at the edges when camera is in motion.
is it only possible to get interlaced out of this cam/sensor?
hmm

Sure it is interlaced since the sensor output p50 to a i50 container...
Now the question is "can we set the sensor to only output p30/p25", since the specs sheet doesn't mention any 1080p50/p60 container.

I am so confused with all those framerates and video modes.

I just want to know if the 1080p24 mode is true progressive (no interlacing or other tricks) or build from an interlace signal (I read about 540p). This makes a big difference.

Otherwise this camera looks like a winner.

Are record times limited to 10-12 minutes (4GB), like on the Canon EOS cameras?

Downloaded the video which is in a Quicktime container, but can't play it. Anyone have any luck playing the footage locally?

And if it's in .MOV format, is there a chance that conversion has done some nasty things to the video quality?

You must understand that this is done by Andrew Raid.

This means that it is done very unaccurately, without real targets.
Emotions prevail. As always.
Yeah. And "raw video" is reencoded useless crap.

Mov is just the container (edit, sorry, I see you said that). The file is XDCAM EX and needs a codec to play. If you're on a Mac with FCP, you already have it. If not, then you can use http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/QXD.asp

It's a free download with watermark, but it'll give you a good enough idea. Video looks clean, and it's being pushed quite hard in low light, but clearly interlaced.

It would be the most stupid move to keep it like it is. They MUST change that. What do PAL people need 24p for? Makes no sense at all.

Exactly!

lol, the big names got you all clamboring and fighting over the crap tech that existed a decade ago. Take a look around at the sensors that exist for machine vision cameras, you can record at least 2160p at 24fps with global shutter for a fraction of what panasonic and canon would charge to tack on a few features and a pretty case. For what you pay for a "professional" camera you could just as easily have a custom housing made and hire a engineering team to write the backend on it and be heads and tails above a RED ONE.

Really though, where do you think the difference in cost comes from between manufacturing a GENESIS and a GH1?

Marketing.

Ya gotta love these conspiracy theories. The "logic": any company could take ten year old technology and cheaply blow away the efforts of RED, Canon, Panasonic, etc. These big companies could do it too, but they are colluding to produce poorer quality products at high prices - we know they aren't actually competing with each other.

FYI, marketing is not a cost of manufacturing.

Time to get some of your gasoline powder and put it in your 100 mpg car, that Detroit can make but instead chooses to let the Japanese companies pants them.
