GH2 official discussion thread

"The Extra Tele Conversion function virtually extends the zoom range up to 2.6x, thus the max.728mm in AVCHD Cinema/FSH mode, max. 1092mm in AVCHD SH mode and Motion JPEG HD / WVGA mode and max.1344mm in Motion JPEG"

Can anyone confirm if the "Digital zoom" is variable i.e. 1:1 to 1:2.6x.

Guys, please remember variable framerates.
May be 200% from 50fps will be exactly 25?
But still no details if variable rates work at 50i mode.
May be just old shutter speed trick will work (25fps from sensor in 50i wrapper).

But the data sheet says, that the 50i mode has a readout of 50p from the sensor.

This could be a nuisance for PAL users who want or need to shoot 25p. Even if there is a way of extracting 25p from a 50i wrapper I would rather not have the extra hassle. As mentioned above, maybe a firmware update will give us the 25p option.

What is the problem shooting 24p in the UK, flicker? compatability. Arent a lot of movies shot in 24p how do they get round it for pal release?

I quite fancy the idea of a real 24p mode and live in the UK.

Hmmm... fascinating... I guess it will remain to be seen if their 24p native at 24mbps can possbly be better than the hacked GH1 running at 50. From some initial stuff floating around I hear no, it's not... but until I see raw footage with my own eyes of big wide shots and complex detail and movement who knows. Also curious as to if there is any improvement in jello/skew or not.

The HDMI out for framing is nice... but it lowers or skips or gets cruddy when you actually push the record button? Blech...

that's some good old fashion skepticism.. nice :)

Can one hit the roll button on an external without hitting record on the camera then? If that's the case then it's fine by me i guess. I would stick to my lpowell settings so far, a PAL mjpeg mode makes this camera a buy for me, along with hdmi out.

If both are not working the way we want, then I stick to GH13.

I'm pretty sure (just my deduction or guess never used an external recorder) that the frames would be corrupted thru hdmi out at all times, coz if it's just when pressing record, then it's kind of ... i dunno. Confused.

You can shoot 24p no problem, but as I understand it if you want TV broadcast compatibilty with the UK and much of Europe, which uses 50i, 25p etc, your 24p product will need changing to match the specs required.

Live video HDMI output during recording 100% confirmed by Panasonic site.. god bless panasonic...

But my understanding is that this HDMI output is (intentionally?) degraded.

...bye bye the idea of using a nanoFlash for very high quality recording.

If my understanding of the Japanese translation is correct about this HDMI limitation ...and if it's intentional on the part of Panasonic to protect the AF100...that's simply outrageous.

The more I find out about this thing, the more disappointed I get.

Guys, it is too early to jump to conclusions about Euro versions.

P.S. I have one BIG questions to Panasonic - WTF we still have different versions?
Sorry, but I can't understand.

Of course, it is degraded. No one knows intentionally or not.
Lets hope that before you hit recording button all is ok.
But it'll pose another problem, as sensor mode will be different from your default (always 60fps, lower res).

Very nice camera

Too bad they stayed with the same strap rivet.
After the rivet issues of the GH1, I thought they will come up with a better solution, something that build from the body itself and not with a screw.

In a couple of words: business strategics and european taxes :-)

I don't know about business strategics.
But europian law is easy to pass :-)
Make PAL/NTSC switchable body with 30min limit (for all countries).
But include big colorful paper for non Euro versions about secret key combination to enable unlimited mode.
And here you are, having legal cameras imported to Europe without any time limit because this combination will be known by anyone :-)

I have to say that Panasonic has at least been paying attention - looks like a great camera for $900!

I didn't expect to want this camera as the GH13 is fantastic... but it is so tempting. I was reserving funds for a D7000...

Looking forward to the news as it unfolds!

Looking at zoom levels it looks like
1080p with 2.6 zoom is indeed 1:1 pixel mode.
If it is so, it is major breakthrought.
As you could use many cheap C mount lenses. Included wide ones.
And all this without any aliasing.

I have $30 10x F1.7 B4 mount zoom coming soon :-)
