Hi,

I thought i'd post a grab from a winter clothing TVC i just shot with the HVX & Extreme. I wanted the grade to have a cool look overall but still maintain some contrast & warmth in the skin tones. (Top grab TEST grade) MORE GRABS BOTTOM OF POST (Final Grade) :)

I think it looks good, although (just my 2 cents), Maybe a little less of that effect would be better. You said this is for clothing, I feel like the color changes the natural look of the clothing too much. Its really nice but maybe a little bit much for this application. Again, it looks good and that is just my opinion. cheers!

Thanks. I cc'd the skin tones separaretly after i applied the cool look. You can't really tell unfortunately, I should have put up the straight cool look & then the skin tones adjustment. I agree with your opinion on the strength of the look.

Regards,

Ben

Heres my thought and no offense intended: Its "boring as bat sh*t.

Its not edgy enough for the "market". (ie youth)

The subjects are too close to a boring B.G and its all flat.

...so I feel you need to "trick the shot" up some what in post.

Try a grad top /bottom / both ... so the eye focuses on the stuff you are selling.

Vignettes may work also.

Punch up the contrast and the chroma.

Add some spotlight effects maybe..

Add some grain effects maybe...

Scratch it, overlay it, blur some of it... etc, etc...

Skin tone is not important..you are selling fashion to kids (they dont care and like the "grunge look")

None taken. The final commerical had some nice RGB split effects and film burns, bad film gate effects all that regular grungy stuff. The client loved it so i'm not offended.

To be honest i'm trying to stray a bit from thrashing my work with effects and trying to focus on better composition, colour timing ETC. The actual commercial has some nice shallow DOF due to the LEX aswell. This grab was just to get an opinion on the look.

Regards,

Ben

P.S. I've added a few more grabs below. This was the FINAL GRADE. (Changed my mind on the cool look)

We're always the most critical critic of our own work. It looks kick-ass, dude and definitely feels like a commercial. I know all too well about Vimeo and compression/quality issues.

Hopefully someone can kick out a really good export tutorial for all of us!

Good job, the grading is nice.

Thanks man, I really appreciate that. Vimeo is such a great resource.

Oh... and how much awesome gear do you have? So jealous.

Regards,

Ben.

commercial looks great, how did you add that green color to the final image? I am not talking about the burns, is it me or does the footage have a greenish tint to it

me like it :)

Hi,

I believe i used the "enhance warm" preset as the base look then just added a couple of my own effects and tweaked things a little bit.

Benandaim I thought shooters comment was a bit rude , but after I'd seen the clip.
I say it's still boring. The spot lacks energy.it runs at 15 sec but it feels like 30sec.
The models are way to stiff .They don't have to jump up and down. But the have to be engaging .As if they are going skiing or something. SHots where the models are :
looking over the shoulder.
Looking in to the distance.
Zipping or unzipping their clothing etc. Sunglasses wouldn't hurt.
You just cant have them stand there. I know they 're not pro models. but you are the shooter/director . tell them what to do.

As for the edit and graphics .They are way to slow.
You dont have to edit the whole spot to the beat of the music But it would have been more exciting if you started out like that.I counted ten shots. You could probably squeeze six more shots it there.
The words that are coming in, come in way to slow.
So what it comes down to is more energy .higher tempo.

The colors look nice . I would have gone with a more cooler look.
Loose the twitch effect.

Thanks for the criticism but I honestly can't take anything away from what you said.

The client wanted a REALLY simple TVC. We only had half an hour with the guys and they'd never been on a shoot before, I think they did quite well considering. Almost ALL the clients comments contradict your opinion and that's what i'm in business for... To give my clients exactly what they want!

NO pun intended . You did only ask about the colors. If you can get your hands on afx try blending the layers.
I'm in the business for making money ,second. If l just do what the clients wants that would be a total disaster. I would be out of business right now.People come to me because they want fresh and new idears, and that doesn't necassarly mean fast paced editing. Pleasing the client is always priorty number one.But giving them exactly what they want , believe me it's going to bite you in the B*TT.

Hey, that's ok. You work how you want to & i'll do the same but please don't tell me what i asked the client.

Post some of your work if you want, and i'll check out some of your FRESH and NEW ideas.

Ben :)

Sorry man I did not mean to offend you. And I don't want to know what you asked the client.and Iwas not telling you how to run your business.

So please forgive me.
Can I ask what lens did you use.How is the Letus adapter in the field ?I cant wait for the 170 .
I'll post some of my work as soon as I get a faster connection.( lame excuse,I know)
