Saibaba,

Look great. I test a pre-production model a while back and the color rendition was absolutely terrible with heavy shift towards red. Also, the mounting bracket seemed non standard and didn't fit the GH2 hot shoe. You seem to have no problem. One other thing I found was that it was very easy to knock the on/off button and have the monitor unknowingly on. I would love to hear your comments because I so much wanted the thing to work.

Karl,

It's a Sony rechargeable. NP-FM500H.

I haven't played with it much. But the colors look good. Mounting is perfect on GH2 for handheld or on a tripod.
The rocker switch on the side for settings works great, didn't run into on/off switch issue.

The focus assist works great, it turns the monitor into mono and focused edges are shown in red. Checked with Voigtlander 25 lens.

We have an actual production model coming over the weekend. Hopefully it will be fine. Will report.

Nice thread.. I'm getting ready to buy a smaller camera monitor too. Has anyone checked into the Ruige/ Chinese monitor that they sell on coolLCD. For the money it looks to have a ton of options and I really like the HDMI lock feature, the slide on hood and the button to push the focus assist seems really sweet. I'm going to have to buy something soon so it'll be one that's in the mix. I'm thinking of the Sony... Money is money so if it does most of what the Marshall does then I"m happy because I haven't been too impressed with their stuff in the past. I loved the Manhattan LCD I had but it was too big and more of a client monitor....

Here's a link to the one I was contemplating....

Thanks for pointing this out. It has a feature no other small monitor has - an HDMI out. This means you could loop through it and go into an HDMI capture device.

My only reservation is the peaking. It seems to be a Sharpness only control, which might be OK or might not. Has anybody actually seen this monitor in person and tested it?

So has anyone been able to test the Sony to see if it is good?

A very short test. Yes, it's nice with sharp image. I found the color cast to be closer to the EVF than the LCD, which had a greenish cast to it in comparison.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to do any thorough testing, but I think it's definitely worth considering, especially at the price. I will look at it again later and when I need an external monitor, if nothing else is available, I will go for it.

Interesting. I'm curious as to why you chose to spend over $1000 on an 800x480 monitor when you could've got the DP6 at 1280x800 for $900?

Well... DP6 would become way more expensive than that after all custom taxes to import it over here since they haven't any official dealer in Europe. Besides that, Marshall monitors are the industry standard over here, so I can get what I've paid for it after just some weeks renting it and... Besides all that, I'm inclined to agree with Marshall themselves when they say resolution isn't everything. I'm really impressed with this monitor. You can easily compose your shot and focus pulling is a breeze with it, even if you don't use the focus assist function (perhaps being a 7" display would somehow contribute to it). The false color function is damn cool, and complicated light scenarios are much better evaluated with ease.

I didn't tried the DP6 and probably never will just because they aren't sold here, but I can tell you that I'm really pleased with my option.

I owned the Marshall V-LCD70XP-HDMI monitor for not quite a year. It worked fine with my Canon 5DII and 7D. It was heavier than what I wanted for handheld work. I ordered the Marshall 5" as soon as they were announced and waited for months. The 5" Marshall was just as nice in a smaller package, portable, easy on a shoulder rig and for the most part I was pleased (power switch is in a terrible location, with batteries inside, it can turn on when packed in a case). Focusing was not as easy as I had hoped with the Canon cameras though.

Then recently with the dvxuser discount for SmallHD, I pulled the trigger and ordered the DP6. Hands down a superior monitor. Much easier to focus on the fly than either of the Marshalls. It's the type thing you just have to experience to understand. A 5.6" screen is a perfectly good size, the form factor of the casing makes that even better. The Marshall 7" was physically bigger and heavier than maybe it needs to be.

The nice thing about the DP6 is that SmallHD is listening to is users and adding features to the firmware, features that the Marshall doesn't have and probably won't. DP6 firmware updates are a breeze. Battery options for the DP6 are far more helpful than the Marshall 5", I can use Canon LP-E6 batts from the DSLR bodies to power it, other battery options available as well. Possibly a Sony L battery plate coming, maybe.

So for now, I dedicate the DP6 to the Canons because it has a good resizing of the feed to make the Canon preview and recording feed larger. And I dedicate the Marshall 5" to the GH2 since it fills the screen edge to edge.

I know price is always a consideration, and the DP6 is priced a little high, the current discount helps a bit. But I see myself using the DP6 further down the road than I do the Marshall with future cameras as long as they are HDMI.

Hi, photonashville.

Would everything you comment here concerning your two Canon cameras, apply to the Canon T2i as well? I especifically refer to the actual size shown during preview/recording/playback.

Also, can you still see your camera LCD monitor while the SmallHD is in function? Or it only happens with the GH2? And does the Marshall 5" allow the camera to show image simultaneously?
Thanks,
Ana.

Daniel, here is a picture that I hope shows what you are looking for.

Hi Reed. Sorry to come to the thread so late. But what you are showing in your picture (both images simultaneously), does it also apply to the T2i as well as to the GH2? Did you have the chance to try it? Also, would the image in the Marshall monitor fill up the screen with the T2i? Thanks so much if you can tell me some good words on this.
Ana.
