GH2 Monitor

Hi,

I've been reading the $130 monitor thread but I'm thinking on spending some more bucks in a real camera monitor.

I also read mixed opinions on the Marshall LCD50, the monitor I was planing to buy, mostly because the 480p area that Canons feed to the monitor thus ending with a window frame that isn't much larger than Canons own LCD.

Can anyone tell me how this monitor will work with the GH2?

Thanks

The GH2 output will fill the frame properly.

Hi, I am also interested in this monitor and has the same problem than the OP. It seemed to be the best for my budget until I saw it with a Canon and up against the smallhd dp6. The image was really small compared to the dp6 and not much larger than the 3' Canon lcd. Since then it has created a big confusion in my mind. I am not asking you to do a full blown video review of the Marshall 5 inch monitor. But if ever you have some time, just a picture with the output of the gh2 and the back of the camera just as a comparison. Thanks

I use the SmallHD DP6 and it works GREAT with the GH2. Look at my post titled "the sexiest (and practical) GH2 rig with a SmallHD DP6". That monitor has many adjustments, and features like: focus assist, false color, 1:1 pixel mapping, etc. The quality is top notch and the definition is an impressive 1280x720 on a 5.6" display!

Hope this helps.

The problem with the canons (7d aside) that you have to understand, is that they change their aspect ratio between recording and previewing, which is why the monitors don't show the full image properly. If they didn't change their ratios you could just set it for the right ratio (16x9, 4x3, 3x2) and it would stay the same, but unfortunately they do. So you can set the ratio for preview, but it will be off for recording, or vice versa. The GH2 however, does not have this problem, and maintains a 16x9 ratio during both recording and previewing.

So if you'd like to know what your GH2 will look like on a monitor, plug it into a television, and then imagine that television is 10" big. There you go.

Also here is a review I did of the Marshall monitors using my GH2, enjoy!

I use the Marshall LCD50 on my GH2 and I can confirm for you that the GH2 fills the whole screen. The false color and focus assist function along with frame lines for different aspect ratios convinced me to buy mine and I am very happy with it. I don't think many other monitors can compete in this price bracket.

Thanks for the info, would it be possible for you when you have time to do a photo of the two screen (the back of the gh2) and the LCD50. I don't know if it possible for both of them to be showing an image simultaneously. If not, just two photos of the two side by side and alternatively one by one showing an image. Thanks

There is another contender now with the sony-v55. You can find a review of a pre production version here http://crews.tv/blog/2011/02/02/sony-v55-dslr-monitor/ it seems to be a little less feature rich than the LCD50 but we will have to see the price. At first it was said to be $ 400 now the reviewer is saying $ 500. If a photo camera division start to producing these expect some very low price in the future.

So many mixed opinions about the size that I've made an effort and ended up picking the LCD70XP-HDMI instead. I'm receiving it later next week. I can post my feedback here if you'd like.

The camera LCD and monitor will operate simultaneously. If I have a second in the next few days I will post a picture for you.

I second the option for the Sony CLM V-55.
Here's the link to the product page of the official Sony website:
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...clmv55:dg_ggldf&productId=8198552921666295823

It states that it'll be available on or about 2/14/11 which is next week. For $399, I think it's a good deal.
The only downside is that it does not have the false color option.
Pros: Takes Sony M-Style batteries (instead of the AA's like the Marshall), has an auto out for monitoring.

Adorama already has it listed on their website. Sony stated 2/14/11 but who knows, it might be in March when the monitor is available.

What is good is that it is coming from the photo accessory side, so it does not have the usual tax associated with video equipment. I am talking about government tax etc, it is just that when the video division of a company quote for a product, they just multiply the cost by 2 to 3. At this price it becomes very competitive, it lacks the false colour and button layout of the Marshal 5' but it still has peeking which is unheard of at this price level.

Not exactly what you wanted. Here is a picture of the monitor in use on my GH2. I had the camera LCD turned off to conserve battery but you can get a rough idea of it's size. I will try to take a picture later that is exactly what you wanted if your still interested.

In terms of the Marshall versus the Sony I would spend the extra 150 dollars on the Marshall just for the false color feature, it is well worth it. Also I didn't notice on the Sony specs if it did aspect ratio lines other than 16:9 and 4:3, the Marshall does 1:85:1 and 2:35:1 along with a few others that I find very useful for my work. This monitor is probably the best investment I have made for my kit other than glass.

Thank you very much Reed, it is really what I wanted to get a good idea. I will be buying my gh2 through Japan in the next week and tis will give me a good idea about the size.

Interesting. I'm curious as to why you chose to spend over $1000 on an 800x480 monitor when you could've got the DP6 at 1280x800 for $900?
