GH2 for 'Cinematic look'

To my eyes, the Canons - especially the 5DmkII - are capable of a 35MM "polished" filmlook, whereas the GH1/2 tend to look more "gritty" like 16mm. They're just like different filmstocks, if you want to see them that way. Use them accordingly to get the narrative effect you desire.

the second trailer is my kind of shooting, and that's good enough for me :) (still, depends on how the real movie looks on a theater screen etc..)
Has screened on big theater screens in festivals all over the country. There are many reports of those who saw it at South By Southwest (one of the top 10 film festivals in the world). All seemed to say the same thing, which is that it looked absolutely fantastic.

And like I say, this was on the original GH1. Stock. No hack. The GH2 is leaps and bounds better.

thanks for the info Barry.
can i find any specs of their lens and rig?

Hello to all of you! This is my first post in this forum, and I hope you guys could help me out. I'm about to buy my first HDSLR camera (:cheesy:). I'm torn between the Canon 7D and the GH2.

I love the GH2 because the image quality is just superb, very crisp and more detailed than the 7D. Sadly, the Panasonic GH2 lacks (in my opinion) the 'cinematic look' that I find so appealing in the Canon family (7D,60D,5D). I've seen footage of both cameras in 24fps, and the GH2 looks like high quality video, If you know what I mean.

I will be shooting mainly in 24fps, 60/50 will only be used for slow motion. I've seen videos with different lenses, yet they lack this 'film look' that I see in the 7D, even in the RAW footage.

Is this something that can worked out in the options or something? or should I just resign and accept that the GH2 is not for me? I'm very new to this, your help will be deeply appreciated!

My $0.02 to the OP: if you don't like the "look" of the GH2, no in-camera settings will change that for you. I disagree that you can simply state it is because the GH1/2 is "hyper sharp" that it is giving it its video look. As many have pointed out in this thread, there are a large amount of factors that deliver the Panasonic "look" and the Canon "look", and many of those factors are unfortunately baked into the cameras, their chips and their algorithms.

To make things simpler, I would suggest not trying to rationalize and breakdown the reasons for the look, but to just say there is a Panasonic cinematic look and a Canon cinematic look. If the Panasonic look doesn't do it for you, then you'll have to forgo it's feature set from its cameras. You probably don't want to hear this, but currently, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

That being said, if you're shooting narrative work for a general audience, most likely 95% of your audience won't be able to tell the difference between the Pana-look and the Canon-look.

Everything about the GH2 is substantially better than anything and everything about the GH1.

Hehehe....that does not help in my decision of which one to keep (both are sitting on my table staring at me right now :)).

In my few days of playing with Gh2, I'm haven't found enough reasons (yet) to put my Gh13 on ebay (I only want to keep ONE camera).

Well, to me, the things about the GH2 that make it overwhelmingly more desirable than the GH1 include:
1) ability to actually use a monitor
2) a sort-of zebra system so you can get decent exposure
3) the ETC mode for alias/moire-free images and super telephoto
4) a RELIABLE, problem-free, no-hassle, no problems 24p mode. That was the biggie.
5) no banding. That's another biggie.

I'm sure there are many other things in there that I don't have the faintest idea how to use. I don't care whether I learn how to use them or not. Just getting a high-quality, high-performance codec with no need to hack it, no card write errors, and no need for Class 10 cards, is a huge improvement, and the occasional vertical bands are gone gone gone, which is another huge improvement. And the ETC mode is just plain fun, it's got enormously less skew, and it's reportedly moire-free (haven't put it to the test yet so I can't verify that) so it's really like two cameras in one -- a shallow-DOF large-sensor (but potentially aliasing/moire'ing) camera, and a small-sensor nearly-skewless alias-free camera too.

What do I miss from my GH13?

Um...

Hold on, I'm thinking here...

Uh, okay, I miss that it included an AC adapter for being able to run off of wall power.

Other than that, no ... sayonara and goodbye, and hello GH2!

See I was gonna put mine on Ebay but then decided I'd rather have two cameras than like $500.

Totally valid and excellent perspective. It's a whole lot less hassle to have two frequently-used lenses on two bodies, rather than juggling lenses on and off of one body. And it makes your avatar make more sense.

Seriously, though, I can see your point. I just grew to not trust the GH13; nothing I can't stand more than equipment that chokes when you need it to perform. I appreciate all that Vitaliy did, he revolutionized and re-energized the GH13, but ... when it got right down to it, it'd fail on me too frequently and I have no use for that, so ... I sold the GH13 and put the dough towards a GH2, and will use it as a backup/crashcam/etc for the AF100.

Love Jack's stuff. Can't wait to get my GH2 on Tuesday. So I heard you left our great city of Wilmington for Vegas. What's up with that?! lol

Yes, I agree that everyone has a different interpretation of what cinematic look is. Maybe I'll just post some examples of what I believe is cinematic compared to 'videoy'.

I guess this is what I mean by cinematic:

and this is what I mean by 'videoy':

Sorry i have only just read through this thread but you have a different opinion of good quality video the GH2s is best by far IMO,

You talk like the rest of us are relying on the camera only and you just add more information to the discussion but nothing is new to us. Good point though.

This thread is about 7D and the Gh2 and which one that is closer to this film look we all want. Most people (me included) prefer Canon for a "cinematic look". The camera never does the job for you but they have different characters.

Rubbish i owned a 550D it was no more cinematic not that i cared,i am sick of this film look all the time the reason i dont go to the cinema is because of the flicky grainy picture albeit from the prints from the second generation copies they show, bit behind on this but the GH2 is a class higher over the canon i had.
