GH2: Blue horizontal banding?

Broken devices. You've got to be kidding. Talk about hyperbole.

And nobody is talking about not having problems resolved, but it seems that most of the problem occurs at the edge of the camera's performance. That's hardly broken. Annoying, yes. Workable - absolutely. Will it get fixed? Most probably.

Well I guess if my car were to blow a tire, but the rest of the car worked fine, I should just keep on going, since its just a small part of the bigger picture right? When I buy a camera to shoot video, which might I add is a highly talked about feature from Panasonic themselves regarding this camera, and the video doesn't perform properly, I should just accept that? If a key element of your product does not work 100%, I would consider that broken. If it was just a case of not looking so hot at high ISOs, or focusing poorly, then sure, limitations of the camera. But this is an obvious defect relating to the way the sensor is operating, as from what we can see, it's not on every model, and it goes away under certain circumstances. Seems like more a defect than an annoying camera quirk. If you had a crack in your window, but it still closed, would you not consider it broken?

A little reality check. This is a still camera with a nifty video feature tacked on, not a dedicated video camera that is engineered to function well at all settings. I don't know of any camera that functions well at 3200 iso. If you can name one that is priced the same as a GH2 with comparable features then sell your camera and pick that one up.

Or better yet, write up a petition and get a ton of people to email Panasonic customer service. I don't think posting here really accomplishes getting it fixed. I'm not even sure if they're aware of this as an issue. The more people that complain about it to the right channels the sooner there will be a fix.

The flat tire analogy is way too far fetched. That would leave you dead-in-the-water. But a small crack in the windshield while living in Florida would be more like it :) . Living up north with a crack in the windshield causes trouble in the wintertime...especially after blasting the heat in the cold weather. It just gets worse.

if it was just 3200 iso problem then you're right, but it's not. it's pretty visible on 1600, and i saw it even on 800. i personally feel that if i tested all GH2's they come up the same. there is a lot of test footage around, and i suspect there's a lot of people that avoid testing on really underexposed conditions that will definitely show the problem. sure you can avoid it with proper shooting, but it IS a problem, and not a minor one. i personally like the 1600 look very much, i like the grain and the feel.. so for me it's a bigger problem. (PROBLEM is a big word.. you can probably fix it in post. but what for?? i prefer it to be gone)

I hear you. Has everyone who has seen the problem reported it to Panasonic with footage links clearly showing the problem?

that would be a good pro active start =) report it with accompanying footage. I know when i get mine i will do the same just for the hell of it. I have even started to post on panasonicau in twitter and facebook about 25p. No answer though, probably cause they have no idea pana Australia. I wonder how many times i can repost the topic until they get sick of it. jump on my bandwagon fellas,,,yeeehaaa!

i'm afraid there's not much i can do back here in Israel.. tried writing them on some global message center but panasonic 4/3's are very rare around here. no costumer support.

By the way guys. I did quite a few tests last night capturing hdmi to an intensity pro in prett terrible lighting and didn't see any banding. This isn't comprehensive yet, but if we see this continue it may indicate that the fault lies with the encoding.

Nope, its on the monitor output too but only once you hit record on the camera.

this seems like a very simple concept of garbage in/garbage out.... It would happen on 35mm film or anything where you have some bad lighting, bad techniques... I thought that this was a problem at all settings and all framerates, etc, but if it's mostly during low light then that's a condition and or situation that would expect issues..... especially at this price point. Seems more like a mute point if it's also not universal on all of the cameras.... People will always demand more and vent so don't buy it...

Well I guess thats the problem then, if I had spent $3000 on this camera, then I would have a right to complain about techinical issues (NOT image quality issues, which this is not.). But since I only spent $1000, their allowed to make a technically broken camera. Guess thats how products work now....

Seems pretty illogical if you ask me.

What's the best/fast way to talk to Panasonic?

I know Jan is from Panasonic and posts here, but I think it's not her division. What about Barry? Sometimes people just need a leader with direct connection to organize the communication.

you should add about 500$ for hours of frustration from finding you have your money shots ruined.. trying to fix it in post..trying to contact Panasonic etc.. ;)

Anyone have any questions for me to pass on to the engineer/customer support when they get in touch? Only questions I have is whether this problem exists in all cameras and if he thinks there will be a firmware update to fix it.

I suggest not making it a question but stating it as a problem with some of the cameras that deserves a firmware fix. If you leave it open ended it's easy to ignore, but if you have a strong statement and several links to the problem and you yourself can replicate it every time, then requesting a firmware seems pretty reasonable.

I would give them directions on how to replicate the issue and what it looks like. You want them to be able to do it and see it clearly.
