GH2: Blue horizontal banding?

i may just wait until the first crop of gh2s are absorbed an hope all theses issues are cleared up in the later batch.

That's what I'm doing. I'm just gonna save up the money over the next few months. Who knows? Maybe by that point we'll have a shocker announcement from Canon that turns it all on its head once again.

All's I care about is getting rid of that moire and aliasing without any new bugs popping up...

Well, the aliasing is pretty bad on some of those deeper focus long shots. Took me right out of what was otherwise a nice effort.

At what times?? Are you talking about at :34, 1:07, I have a 24" iMac and I also played it on a 42" LCD and it looked great. If he had used a tripod this little flick would have been spectacular! As it is now it is excellent....

I guess he can always go back and re-shoot it and I would suggest he does.....Most of the DSLR stuff I see would be better served if a tripod was used.
I am an old film & video shooter and almost always use a tripod. The DSLR video seems to really magnify the hand held shaking.

I could not spot the blue banding. And I saw no other wierdness....
I have downloaded it and gone through frame by frame....it looks great.

It´s there in a few scenes and can easily be spotted. But if one doesn´t know about it, he will hardly see it.

"Took me right out of what was otherwise a nice effort."

Wow jmmusic, that was dismissive and condescending. The work was great. Nitpick the camera if you must, but don't act like it ruined the piece.

"Oh my delicate sensibilities! I see aliasing. Its ruined I say. Ruined!"

Guys, please enlighten us where you see it, i.e. seconds reference so we can have a good study for ourselves to try and understand it, so we can try to mitigate the imperfections ourselves. I personally see a few things, posterization and noise, but for the life of me I can't find any aliasing, and I've examined as many horizontal and vertical edges as possible...and I still get nada. Help?

Download it and watch it fullscreen.

I can spot it at
00:20 (very evident)

The rest is harder to see
00:55
01:35
01:42

RUUUINED!! ;)

Just run through it again. Doesn't look like aliasing to me. Looks more like just trying to resolve detail at ISO 3200 in fine lines and edges. Aliasing to me has a more pronounced stepping effect.

Each to their own I suppose. But you're right, the footage is ruined. I think he should return his camera :)

:20 - are you talking about the dark shot of the projector switch?
I turned up the brightness & contrast and still saw nothing objectionable.

:55 the VU meter?? I see some wobble...
1:35 ?
1:42 ?

I have been a professional editor for 25 years. I guess it is time to retire.
I don't see anything wrong with those shots. Shooting with any
video camera under less than ideal conditions will pick up some
grain here & there. I have shot and edited with RED and
had footage that was crappier than what I am seeing here.
And we are looking at a compressed mp4 file.
The GH2 is an 8 bit camera and holds up well
to cameras costing 5-20 times as much.
I remember my first BetaCam cost $35,000, shot SD
and was 8 bit as well. The workflow was slow & clunky.
At the time I thought it was a real step up from 3/4".
Todays cameras are incredible and I enjoy the incredible
videos & talent I see.

You can find the blue horizontal banding in this Video but in how many scenes? This cam is awesome i think.

I already told you after the rough cut: utterly fantastic! Great location, great shots, great music, great edit! And since we´re in a banding thread: I can´t perceive anything like that, be it blue or dark grey banding... and that at iso 3200! Maybe some extreme pixel peeper should better think about getting a microscope than buying a camera for filmmaking...

You´re mixing something up. I was reffering to the banding issue (the dark grey on), not aliasing!

@HVXguy: I just said that I can see the banding in these scenes, that´s all. Doesn´t destroy the film though...
