GH2: Blue horizontal banding?

Hey Framerate

I've just shot an ISO 1600 clip (very crudely as normal), and I can confirm also the slightly less exposed band. It's easy to spot in scenes with very little detail; like a wall. And then it has to be underexposed a fair bit to show. Apart from test scenes, I really can't imagine many situations that would have me shooting vast areas of under exposed low detailed midtones.

Is it a problem? Sort of. Is it better than the GH1 I had? Hell yeah. I've uploaded the ISO 1600 clip, and in my eyes it's fantastically clean in comparison to what I've been used to. No vertical bands, no whispery horizontal bands, just fine noise that's under control. Frankly I'm amazed by its potential.

Here's the link to the clip: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6121214/00030.MTS

Have you seen the line in 1080i or 720p? Ive not noticed it yet.

I didn't see any camera image flaw in the link bad enough to bump a viewer out of the experience, providing you have engaging content. Sure, it would be nice if Panasonic cleaned this stuff up but if you purchased the GH2 because you have something worth shooting right away, I don't think you should be experiencing any buyer's remorse.

I have used cameras that cost 100 times more than the GH2. All cameras have some minor flaws. I have shot a lot of RED footage and have seen minor defects in that footage as well. The video that the GH2 produces at it's price point is incredible. You cannot expect any camera to produce flawless footage under less than ideal lighting conditions.

Take a look at these clips and tell me why Panasonic won't sell millions of GH2's?????

While I have not always had an exact idea of what the light levels and ISO settings have been, I have now seen enough online GH2 footage to confirm that the banding problem has NOT been fixed in the GH2... certainly not enough to warrant purchasing one at this moment.
I know it is a lot to ask of a camera at this price point to have pro light level performance, but the banding really is ugly, and I would prefer the generalised noise that many CMOS sensors produce .. at least that can be dealt with in post. Seems little different to the GH1 to me. The mud seems to be somewhat improved but that was mainly taken care of on the GH13.
Anybody got any idea of how the jello compares ?

north heart...I'd rather this issue than the fixed pattern noise in the GH-1(3) personally.

I'm in complete agreeance with this statement, and its why I'm hanging on to my GH2, with hopes of a fix down the road than getting rid of it.

I have zero buyers remorse. The cameras amazing. GH1 is being sold. If we dont discuss it Panasonic might not fix it or even know about it.

My opinion of the jello compared with the GH1 is that it could be worse, but its probably the same.

Yep I agree incredible camera. But im not sure why you are posting those links in this thread. We are just investigating the bug. We know its capable of great things and this bug probably wont bother 99% of people most of the time. But we gotta be able to discuss it and try to sort it and at least inform people who havent bought it yet what to expect under certain conditions and in certain modes. Maybe this will help push Pana to fix it. We also need to at least be able to know the quirks of our new equipement and there workarounds, theres no point pretending its not there, that gets us no where.

+1

Thanks for the common sense.

I think people complaining about not so clean footage at ISO 3200 (!!!) should buy an Epic... :)

i think it's because AVCHD to blueray doesn't necessarily need 25p so they just dumped the option.. ?

Well that would be rather short sighted wouldn't you say?
Blu-Ray is hardly used except for entertainment titles.
I pushed clients hard to adopt DVD and then Blu-Ray.
No one wants to distribute anything on Blu-Ray.
Hollywood uses it and I have several Blu-Ray players......
But the future of delivery is on-line. I can encode & play MP4 files
on a PS3 or WD TV and have several clients using this method
to play HD video at Trade SHows & Conferences.
I dare say that I have not burned a Blu-Ray disc - and don't plan to.

Now don't ask me about 3D - that is a whole new ballgame.

I'm wondering, if the blue banding is this faint, shouldn't it be feasible that amidst all the other color correction we do on footage, this one would be fairly simple to address by putting a simple horizontal rectangle and pushing the blue pedestal level within that mask down a bit? I wonder...
