Got my GH2 Pal UK Thursday from Mathers, it has the same band problem as Japanese, US models. Goes away at 1/25th - 1/30th, appears after that. I think tele mode has it slightly but not as much. Wonder why it disappears at 1/30th. It seems completely clean also before you hit record, it only shows when you hit record. Shows when using HDMI monitor too.
Wow, you got HDMI recording to work??? Details, please! Footage !!!
))))
What I've noticed with my model (and show in my video, is that the bar moves down the frame and eventually off of it once you hit 1/30. So I think it might have something how it's interpolating down or something like that (I really don't know enough about the technicals of how they pixel bin and all that stuff.
You should try something, try hitting record when it's at 1/30 shutter and then after recording raise it to 1/60. I found on my GH13 that it helped reduce banding. More so than if I just hit record when my shutter was at 1/60.
Is this not quite a big problem in that on the GH1 everyone is using 1/50 shutter as per the 180 degree shutter rule to help with the cinematic look? What about when you want to do slow mo and want even higher shutter speeds?
This sounds really crap!
Just tried this. No luck. Shoot at 1/30th, iso 3200, underexpose, raise to 1/50th from 1/30th and you can see it pop up as soon as you roll the shutter up, with each shutter change the band moves higher. Where it will occur is predictable for whatever shutter. 1/50th band line is about 1/4 from the bottom of the LCD and its easy to see on the screen or evf. Doesent seem to appear in stills or before you hit record in video mode. Anyone managed to get it to show in still mode? Not had much time with it but I will have a go at trying recording in different modes, see if any weird trick stops it occuring. I doubt its gonna be a problem for most people 99% though, this isnt as bad as GH1 mud or banding problems were I dont think. But would be nice to get it sorted out and at least theres a fix shoot at 1/30th when in higher isos, low light, video wise.
Banding at 3200 iso? Well we can't have everything.
Is it obvious at 1200 - 1600 iso?
After a quick test 1600 I can see it. 800 not so far. The same guy who found the bug I think just posted a more recent video at 3200 iso 1/50th http://vimeo.com/17369205. Watch it and see what you all think, its best real situation ive seen of it. If you can watch the video first without obvisouly looking for it, before reading any further.
If you cant find it watch again and Look 1/4 up from the bottom of your screen if you fullscreen it. A faint line goes right across, this line changes and goes up wards as you raise shutter. Just to recap he has a US, I have a UK, and roei has a Japanese camera and we all have it. Heres a clear view of what it is http://vimeo.com/17281822

Hey Framerate
I've just shot an ISO 1600 clip (very crudely as normal), and I can confirm also the slightly less exposed band. It's easy to spot in scenes with very little detail; like a wall. And then it has to be underexposed a fair bit to show. Apart from test scenes, I really can't imagine many situations that would have me shooting vast areas of under exposed low detailed midtones.
Is it a problem? Sort of. Is it better than the GH1 I had? Hell yeah. I've uploaded the ISO 1600 clip, and in my eyes it's fantastically clean in comparison to what I've been used to. No vertical bands, no whispery horizontal bands, just fine noise that's under control. Frankly I'm amazed by its potential.

Not need to shout at me and get excited. This isn't DPR.:cheesy:
If you're happy, that's all that matters - it doesn't matter what I think, or what anyone else thinks.
Similarly, I made my own choice based on my best assessment of the situation - which is that Panasonic could have released a first batch of GH2's that they know are not quite right, simply to meet that psychologically important Christmas deadline.
That's only my opinion, and I could well be wrong - but it's what I think probable, and I based my buying decision on it.
You made a different choice, and it's certainly not for me to comment on it. I'm pleased that you're happy with it, and I hope it gives you a lot of trouble free enjoyment.
Unfortunately my editing rig crashed later that night, and I had to restart from scratch, lost the footage. I'll hopefully be recording something today (Saturday) and I'll post when I have some footage to show. As far as details, it wasn't hard, plug in camera, hit record, screen is cleared, capture with a capture card (in my case an MXO2 mini max).
True, my GH1 was a croc in video with FPN, so it certainly was a no-brainer. I've admired the footage from your GH1 for a while, so I fully understand your reluctance to move from what is essentially a brilliant camera.
I personally think the conjecture is a little wide of the mark, but I'm willing to be wrong. I now have a camera which my GH1 should have been![]()
