GH13 + vertical banding

Roelf, the guys at neat video will actually help you with your problem. I would send them the screen shot or some footage and ask them if they can help you. The Neat Video Software has a great number of variables that in the hand of an expert can do amazing things.

It's ironic for me to just see this thread now... as I've been discussing these issues about my GH13 experience with a friend. I think there are people on the boards that are much more experienced that would be better qualified to write a blog than I, about the GH13's limitations... but with all the hype I think most people are too emotional to read unbiased impressions as neutral anyway. I'm really impressed with the GH13 and love it for what it does, but it's not that great at everything.

If you draw a line to represent best quality video to worst quality video due to lighting... going from bright to dark, with the canons it seems like you're doing a cross-dissolve with noise to a point where the noise is simply too much to accept and you add more light. With the GH1 there's a point where you get specific elements of distraction (colored bands) even though the image otherwise looks like you can deal with even less light. It's a really sad day if we're now calling ISO 200 "high"...

If you find a good way to beat the banding, I'd be interested to know. To be honest with you that neat video repair looks pretty good... but I'm with Chris, you can't tell much even full-screen on a computer vs. a 1080p TV... let alone a small jpeg.
 
I agree MattinSTL. But in regards to Neat Video there's no exageration....it is a miracle worker. Been using it now for the last 3 years. One can easily go overboard with it ...but when you get your settings just right then it's like night and day. I've used other s before and they don't come close. I just wish the GH-1 got it right the first time so as to avoid another workflow.

I agree with what you said in another thread... ultimately it boils down to image quality... and I'm glad you're another person on the boards who can call it like it is (since you had canons also).

I'll probably end up with one of each... for other reasons besides this, but including easy low-light.

This is what I planned from the start when contemplating buying the GH-1. But I decided to get the kit lens with the GH-1 to see how that worked out. I actually like the kit lens so my sights are now set on getting a T2i (same image as 7D) to go along with the Pana. I think the Nostalgic mode in Pana will match up nicely with the Canons.
 
Sounds like certain GH 1 cameras out there have especially bad problems with banding, it just keeps on coming up. Neat video works for me to get rid of it, but then again I choose not to shoot at anything higher than 800 iso, the thinking being over that the default noise is probably going to be tough to deal with anyway.

This is my plan exactly. I had one in my cart from a store that keeps selling them out (I have a credit there)... there was a great sale when combined with BING (now dead)... and they literally sold out AGAIN in the couple minutes it was taking me to enter my info.

Freakin' ridiculous... I've been ready to pull the trigger on a T2i for weeks now... but only from the place where I have a credit that shall go un-named until I have the cam.

Today was a bad day but I got some OK footy... and I had the value of the kit lens pleasantly reinforced. You would have a DAMN hard time shooting a fast-paced gig with manual lenses... DAMN hard. I thought I could do it... no, it's hard. You don't use auto-focus (except to CONFIRM focus)... but you do need all the luxuries of the kit lens if you're moving fast and have enough light.

Anyway... back to your regularly scheduled banding.
 
The banding that my GH1 shows is visible at 200 asa in clear daylight. I am convinced there are GH1's with bad sensors around. And Panasonic sells these hoping it will go unnoticed.
My way to quickly test for banding is:
Aim your camera at a daylight lit plain wall, set camera at asa 1600, underexpose untill you see the banding, switch to lower asa (and set aperture accordingly to keep same exposure) and see the banding slowly disappear. If it remains visible at asa 200 you are holding a camera with a bad sensor.
 
roelf im starting to think like you now, i have seen too many extremes at both ends ..i seen a few examples of gh1's with kit lens f4. at night with no hack that can do what my f1.4 50mm with hacked firmware ..check this out..its sad ,because i feel now for sure not all GH1's are not made equal

Yeah, I don't know what to make of that... guy says it was the 14-140 on an unhacked GH1... must be 1600 ISO not showing too much noise on vimeo.

Not sure... hmm... gonna' have to think on that one. I can't hardly believe that all those shots simply had more light then it seems.

It's got to be 1600 ISO for sure... there's no way otherwise... just no way. I've never seen a better endorsement for the kit lens... ever. I wonder how much massaging was done in post? There was a thread (gotta' find it now) where somebody was talking about shooting in RAW modes on a cam... and being able to fully bring out detail at proper exposures from what looked like REALLY dark images. I wonder how much Color is helping out the original files?

Whatever... some great stuff there. Head-spinning quality from unhacked + kit lens.
 
Yeah it would be nice to get more info on the settings and maybe a frame grab before he brought it into Color etc.
 
Mattin, the color correct will help, but all that from the kit lens and no hack..yea my head is spinning also..lol
 
Took my GH1(3) out today and noticed that the vertical banding seems to have smoothed out a bit after I did a two day burn in (like an idiot I didn't do before and after pics) but before I couldn't shoot at 200 iso in lowlit areas without seeing it, now I'm up to around 400... But nothing like that footage... MattinSTL is right, it has to be 1600 iso.
 
My new unhackable GH1 is incredible. Even at 1600 asa it shoots without vertical banding. Strange that Panasonic allows good and bad camera's to be sold...
 
Just bought a second hand GH1 body, hacked and all and it is..... incredible. Just delicious. I paid euro 600 for it... Just so you know how much value this hack added.
