GH13 + vertical banding

But more important it is free of this vertical banding. There is FPN at asa 1600 but all at an acceptable level.
 
I never said the FPN is normal.

What I'm saying is that your scene with the confessional should have a lot more ambient light than you think to bring up the shadows slightly so that you have LESS dynamic range from bright to dark. That's how the big boys do it for film and that's how you can also avoid seeing the FPN.

Hey sorry, you wrote this along time ago and the thread's kinda moved on, but the banding I get is pretty much never in the blacks, at least all the footage I've shot it hasn't been, I see it in the skin tones.

I never said I think things should be lit using natural light though, I know you have to light shadows, The problem is when I'm trying to get some contrast in someones face, theres sometimes banding in the falloff. And thats the tough nut to crack, cause you could dial it up on one side than you gotta dial it up on the other and next thing you know your whole approach to the scene is changed.

I just think that earlier models have the issue, later models seem to not have such an issue, so for us early adopters, any workaround should be explored for sure!
 
I think if you do a burn it it gets rid of some of the banding - there's a thread about it someplace.

I can't believe the GH1 owners didn't point you there first.

00007_00002.jpgThis may even be a solution, it worked for me.. here is what i've done... to start with

My GH1 has a hack 1.3, version Native24 at 54Mbps 1080p (50Mbps)

Just recently bought it and it showed medium amounts of vertical banding noise, so since i hated it, I decided to try After Effects and do a "Negative" of Noise with Alpha channel. Since that is fairly impossible I decided to try it and see where I will end up, so here is what I've done:

First I placed 6-7 sheets of small white paper directly in front of sensor ( I haven't used the lens - You must have "USE WITHOUT LENS Enabled in settings of your camera"
In MOVIE Mode set ISO to 1000 and Shutter speed to 100 ( I had to do it becouse my lights flicker at any other setting of shutter except 1/50th and 1/100th)
Point the camera sensor directly into a light ( mine was 75Watt Incadescent)
After that I started recording, the exposure was -1EV that is three dots to the left, and Noise started creeping in, but not any noise, but Banding !!

So here is the next step, I took about 3 x 10second videos with banding, and imported them into After Effects.

Then after importing I used the one that showed most banding issue, import in into New Composition,
Then add new Solid (Preferably white) and put it underneath the footage layer. After that you will set the bottom layer's (White solid)
TrackMatte (TRKMAT) to LUMA MATTE and you will get a whole lot of noise on black background...

Here you will render single frame in .PNG but make sure you keep Alpha so that means RGB+ALPHA Setting
When you render it out you will get a .png file.

Now exit old composition and create new one with footage, and import .PNG files you rendered.

Set .PNG file on the top, and footage underneath it.

Now set the footage TRKMAT to Alpha Inverted.


Now, since my lens still hasn't arrived, I cant test it 100% and say, it's working, but if you have time, or hate banding noise, give it a try.

The whole idea of subtracting pattern noise is not working on different ISOs, however, I will keep trying until I make it.
