GH1 sample footy and pricing

Nikon would have learned a lot from the D90 and 5D. The D400 should have a codec more like the 5D and I think we will find out for sure on April 14

Yeah, John next time I visit Vegas I'll make sure and stop by Toronto, Canada and spend my CND dollars there.

OOOPS! Sorry, my bad. Anyway the images in the background look good. In my opinion Panasonic has a brand name to protect. Their image quality is their currency. I don't think they are going to bring a product out that will not keep up with their legacy. And thats why they are even offering manual control in the GH1. Nikon on the other hand had no video legacy to protect. BTW, you'll be able to see thru the viewfinder while you film right?

It's a nice feature. but if the D400 has a better codec/bit-rate and manual shutter I'll go for the bigger sensor, smaller crop factor, lower light sensitive, lower noise, true 24p, nikon filmic look.

my reason for the gh1 vs rumored d400...is i believe the nikon line won't be able to get past the overheating cause their cmos chip isn't designed for it. the gh1 is in live view all the time. even the red and mk2 have overheating issues. this is something i just don't want to deal with. i think the d400's only advantage it'll have is the aps-c sensor. that's it. their bitrate will be equal to the gh1 too.

Hope Im not jumping the gun here, but I *think* I just put a pre-order in for the GH1 from a shop in Japan. When I get it around the last week of April, I will post how crappy or how not-crappy it is (I also ordered a few Micro 4/3 adapters for nikon, canon and screw mount lenses)

Im not expecting much and I dont think it will beat the 5Dmark2 in image quality, but Im excited about the 24p,30p and 60p options as well as full manual control in video mode (and how small it is).

I just hope I can change the menus to English so I can see what Im doing! - now its just a few weeks of waiting!

I completely disagree. If the D400 comes out with most of the rumoured specs it will make the GH1 look like what it is, a camera for girls. (Hence the gold version...a rumored Paris Hilton Edition coming later this year).

Okaaaay i admit it isn't just for girls..........childrens little hands will be equally at home on this toy.

rumored...seriously, a paris hilton version...gtfo here with that garbage. never post again. but don't worry, i've already got a Toldja So Award for you later.

You should have also ordered the learn Japanese Rosetta Stone dvds! Just in case!

hunter's the new kholi

But who started the history making D90 thread: The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s.... back in the day?

Nikon isn´t crackbrained. Without doubt they watched the market accurately and will draw the conclusion that the video mode must be improved substantially. Otherwise they will lose this growing market to the competitors like Canon + Pana. And this scenario won´t be the interest of Nikon...

Go for it. The images will be 'interesting'. Not too complex scenes should be ok. However even AVCHD with variable block size can't recover high frequency detail in a moving image when recording 1080p24 (25Mb/frame) or 720p60(11Mb/frame) at 13.7Mb/s and 17.4Mb/s respectively. The sad part is this is the year Canon is shipping 1080p30@24Mb/s in consumer camcorders and 720p30@25Mb/s and 1080p30@45Mb/s in digital cameras. Makes you want to cry; like your really hot gf gets arrested for bank robbery.

Update: The photo site size is roughly the same as the EX1/3, 4.1-4.4µm spacing. 6Mp on the Sony, 8 on the Panasonic. More over, the extra 2Mp are all green which are the primary contributor to the luma channel. 13.7Mb/s....more tears.

maybe if we're lucky the D400 will match the 38Mbps mpeg of the 5D. Even mjpeg at that rate would look good. Who's going to want a low bit-rate GH1 if that happens?

I'm sorry but I have to say that It was quite obviously a joke, only a teenage girl or maybe a child wouldn't of got that one.

.....hmmmm maybe the GH1 might be for you..........

You should be able to. Usually cameras are not region coded and allow you to change the language in the menus. The trick will be changing the language from Japanese to English in the Japanese default settings. You might be able to request whom ever you buy it from for them to change the menu settings for you.

I was/am living in Asia when I bought my D90.
