GF1 testing and footage goes HERE

If you're reading this thread you probably know that most of the GH1 hacks work on the GF1. This includes high bit rates, full hd, 4.2.2 color sampling, and more to come (hopefully full manual control and 24/25p). Due to the fact that the GH1 is more of a conventional film tool, at the present time more emphasis and effort is being put into optimizing and perfecting the hacks on the GH1, but once that is accomplished the GF1 is in line for the same. This is a place for sharing your results. We are all very excited and emotions are running high, but lets try keeping things focused organized.

So these hacks are known to work, but have not yet been implemented? Or, will I be able to use ptool to apply these changes to a GF1 right now?

I'm struggling to decide which to get out of the GH1 and the GF1. Unfortunately space in the camera bag is at a premium and I'm supplementing a high end stills-only camera with one of these for video.

GF1 and GH1 size wise is not so much of a difference, I have the GH1 and I see it more as a still camera. Its a matter of ergonomic, the screen the evf and the mic in are perfect for video. Beside the sensor of the GH1 is much better in terms of noise and bigger than the GF1 in 16:9.

BTW here a clip of the GF1 doing 1080 in mjpeg mode.

ahh and it´s not clear yet if the gf1 will have manual video, wehave to wait tester13 gets his camera.

Very impressive Adam! Thanks for posting that.

I have a standalone mic (and recorder) I use for taking notes, it's very good and should be easy to sync up to the video in post. All I wanted was 1080 mjpeg, and you've shown me that is possible. I'll likely shoot with manual glass (I have Zeiss ZM and Leica M lenses) and keep the 20/1.7 in case tester13 gets manual video going.

I assume the only current limitation is that you cannot select shutterspeed and aperture? So with manual lens the only limitation is shutterspeed?

You're right regarding the larger sensor in the GH1, and this had me quite interested in the GH1 instead of the GF1, but I'll likely keep the camera packed without a lens on, and the smaller size will help. I will still think about it a bit though.

Well there is a D-focus mode that lets you control the aperture, you can lock your exposure so the aperture and iso is your limitation, if you are not planing to shoot low light then I suppose the gf1 is right for you. But If I were you I´ll wait a little bit to see how it goes.

btw I´m not adam.

I was pretty psyched about such a cheap and small camera being able to shoot such great footage, but now I'm a bit doubtful: I think I wouldn't be able to pull focus on such a low-res screen (I'm already having trouble with my current canon 500D, which has nearly three times more dots)

Sorry mate :p

I think I'll get a GH1, everything I've read points to it being a much better tool for video, so I'll find a way to cope with the slightly thicker size :p

I have found some GF1 tests on vimeo (the specs bellow have been copied directly from the posts, they're not mine):

Something is a bit off regarding the GF1 footage I've been seeing...even when it's progressive it has a weird interlaced look to it. I'm thinking whomever posted the videos didn't correctly implement the hack. What I'm really dying to see is 24p/25p.
Getting full manual control over video would also be a major breakthrough as most footage I see is overexposed.

Here are some clips I shot with the GF1 over the weekend. I updated both the AVC and Mjpeg settings in the firmware. However, I haven’t seen any differences in the AVC-HD footage. The bit rate always shows below 20 mb/sec no matter what I set it to.

I have settled on the following settings now

1080p 1920x1080
E1Q E2Q E3Q E4Q E1T E2T E3T E4T AVC-HD
384 330 300 276 24 24 24 24 40 50 52 60

good, one guinea pig!

can you get 1080p with AVCHD, or only with MJPEG?
what frame rates are available?
I understand aperture and shutter speed can't be manually set... how about ISO?
and the last one: how about 4:2:2, is that available under AVCHD, or only with MJPEG, and at which resolution?

thanks @thrice!

i use the GF1 with "S" 1/30 - 1/125; screen auto, stop iso 800 and ggf. AEL-hold = half manuell

sry for my bad, bad englisch (I'm a old german man)

AVCHD 1080p: No, 422: No
MJpeg 1080p: yes, 422: No
MJpeg 720p and 422: yes

here a quick-test with "PappasArts" MJpeg-Setting and 422 in 720p 73MBit (originalfile can you download on vimeo)

GF1 MJPEG working:
Quality: [ 384, 330, 300, 276 ]
Table: [ 24, 24, 24, 24 ]
422: Yes
Lens: Pancake 20mm f1.7
Media: Transcend 16GB Class 6
Peak bit rate: 75.7 Mbps
Camera Playback: not working
Recorded several clips up to a couple of minutes, with no hick-ups or freeze from the camera.

GF1 AVCHD failure:
Settings: 2000000,2200000,2400000
Mediainfo report:
General:MaximumOverallBitRate: increased (24Mbps).
Video:BitRate: 16Mbps (depending on scene)
Video:MaxmimumBitRate: stays the same 16.6Mbps

I have tried a bunch of settings for increasing AVCHD bit rate, but with no sucess. It seems the patch only affects the maximum overall bit rate, not the sub limit used for the video stream. Maybe it is controlled from somewhere else, or capped by hardware?

Shot in S-mode, locked exposure with AF/AE-lock button.
(Settings: AF/AE Lock -> AE, AF/AE Lock Hold -> On)

This was working in the PTool version I tried last Friday. It has stopped working in the versions I have tried in the last few days. What is the best way to let tester13 no that AVC-HD bit rate adjustment is no longer working for the GF1?

Quick update of what I have seen so far:
The 20mm pancake causes the 1080p bit rate to spike for some reason. I can record high bit rate 1080p with my MF lenses and the 14-45mm but not with the 20mm. If you do the foliage in bright sunlight in focus test at a high bit rate it will fail after a few seconds.

The 1080p option is clearly sharper than the 720p option even if both are at high bit rates. I will upload the files tonight to demonstrate this.

This is my experience I don’t know if the following is true or not.

E1 and E2 settings are for higher motion detailed scenes. E3 and E4 settings are for lower motion less detailed scenes. With less detail you need lower bandwidth. That is why I typically use 300 for E1 Quality, and then go down to 275 for E2 Quality, 250 for E3, and 225 for E4. The higher the E quality number the higher the bit rate. I have recorded as high as 800 and it was topping out around 90 mb/sec and wouldn’t record for more than a few seconds with any lens and a Class 10 SD card.

I use 175, 160, 145, and 130 for E1 Table through E4 Table respectively. In my experiences the same rules for E quality settings apply to E table settings.

I don’t think the 4:2:2 option is worth messing with right now. Pretty much anything you re-encode it to will eliminate the benefits of the 4:2:2 color.

AVC-HD video adjustments do not work right now specifically for the GF1. They did with the PTool version I have from last Friday but the version released yesterday has broken the video settings. The audio settings work though. If anyone can upload a file from the GF1 that shows the AVC-HD settings produce higher than 24 mb/sec with the newest Ptool version I would appreciate it. I will also want to know what you did to achieve that though.
