Getting 7D very shortly...50mm 1.8 yay or nay?

OK, so I've finally sold off some Nikon cameras and now have a tiny budget to work with in getting my 7D. Since there isn't really a good zoom lens option to replace the kit lenses and keep the budget the same, I will be going with the 28-135 kit. Is it worth it for me to pick up a 50mm 1.8 too? Or should I squeeze out another $100 or so for a different prime?

i'd recommend getting the 50 1.4 or get a 28 1.8. i don't have either, but i have the 50 1.8 and its, well, kind of cheap. for video applications it seems the tighter the lens the better, as it reduces the amount of wobbliness, at least at the point of the lens. or something.

28 1.8 would be a good focal length, and i think the 1.4 would simply be a better build.

Get a Canon EF 50mm 1.8 MK1, pretty much out resolves anything out there including Zeiss ZF and Canon L series glass.

If you held onto your Nikon glass, you can use it with a cheap adapter easily found on eBay.

The 50 1.8 ii is a great lens for stills, but the focus ring is too wanky for video. It is very narrow on the front lip of the camera and undampened.

I liked the 50mm f1.8 for the price. But then I splurged and got the Canon 50mm f1.4. It's $350 vs $100, but it's worth it. Nice long focus throw, incredible DOF, really nice colors and better Bokah.

I've read that for the price the f1.4 is one of the best lenses there is. The same applies to the f1.8, but the f1.4 is just nicer

I would get the Nikon 28mm f2.8 It is probably the sharpest lens out there period in that focal range. I just bought one for $165 on ebay and see a couple more in that price range.

The Ai lens is about the same as the AIS as far as we are concerned (The AIS just cost about $100 more)

This lens will be the lens I have on the camera the most.
I sold my 10-20 sigma to buy this lens (The sigma looked great, just slow)

I also have a nikon 50 f1.4 but I will now not use it so much due to also having a Canon 24-70 f2.8L that will be on the camera when the 28mm is not.

I don't see myself using many other lenses, but I will probably buy another 85mm or 135 soft focus (the soft focus looks amazing to me when not set soft, and even when set soft).

as posted earlier, go for the old 50mm 1.8, the version I. has a real focus ring and longer throw. same great glass. outperforms the 1.4 in terms of sharpness. some people gripe about the 5 blade aperture but i don't find it annoying, myself.

Go to a thrift store, buy an old 50 mm 1.8/1.4 for about 10-40 bucks, make sure it's usable (IE, not Minolta), has a decent reputation and is in good working condition (no fungus, webbing, coating speration, dirt). Get adapter. Shoot.

There, you just saved a bunch of money and have an interesting lens that's built like tank parts.

Nikon 50mm f/1.8

Nikon 50mm f/1.8

I've got a Nikon 50mm f1.8 and love the look. It has 7 blades and provides good brokeh. I cured the focus ring problem with a tip from another poster about using a black zip tie as a focus lever. Definitely one of the best shooting lenses in my bag.

Thanks guys. When I picked up my camera they didn't have one in stock so I figured I'd get one later. Then when I went back in to pick-up a ND filter, I resisted and figured I'd wait. Thanks for the input.

i have owned the nikon 50 1.8, canon 50 1.8 and now most recently old schol ai nikon 50 1.4, and i can tell you both of the nikons are better.

The 50 1.4 i just got was only like $60 on ebay and $15 for a canon adapter for the 7D. Optically the canon is ok, but its cheap feelig and focus ring sucks and is super small.

I don't know how you guys are finding these 1.4 lenses for under 100. I only see them for over 2-300.

you sure your looking at the old school nikon 50mm 1.4, and not the newer one?

its this one

I like my Canon 50mm 1.8 BUT if I were to do it again I would get a Nikon adapter and grab one of the old 50mm 1.4 or 1.8's
